Subject: RE: Do you think the Russian's want war? From: GUEST,_gargoyle Date: 27 Jan 00 - 10:53 PM I have not read your thread/link it does not connect..this is not a music thread....I don't particularly like you .....but I do have a comment within this area. I was visiting ten days ago with a Sephardic Jew/Dutch/Immigrant/friend.
His son is a noted sucessful-popular-international-lable-musician.
As we sit in a throng of people he will point out souls, who sold out to the Germans.....and yet today he does business with them.
He is frightened, that the "German Experience" is repeating itself in Russia....He states the economy, the huge debt, the low moral and morale condition of the population. He has grave concerns....
I don't know........I don't watch main-stream media.... Like Cowboy Rogers "I only know what I read in the papers."
This Dutch man is sincere about his fears.

Subject: RE: Do you think the Russian's want war? From: InOBU Date: 27 Jan 00 - 11:19 PM My dear Gargoyle: I share you and your Dutch friends concerns. The song about which our friend asks, was written in the days before Yeltzin and proposes that we think twice about the cold war, as the Russians suffered greatly, on the same side as the us in the song, Enland and the US. Billy Bragg performed it in Moscow during the early days of the Gorbachev years, as well as a song called Help Save the Youth of America, which he introduced by saying it is about how the young generation is ignored by those in power, and could equally be called Help Save the Youth of the Soviet Union - for which he got great chears from the Russian audience. Oh, those were hopefull days for change in Russia... Unfortunately, we carried the cold war on to the point of destroying the potential that a progressive Marxism could emerge under Gorbachev, and did, in fact empower that Russian facism that your friend and I are worried about. All the best, ol Gargoyle Larry |

Subject: RE: Do you think the Russian's want war? From: Brendy Date: 27 Jan 00 - 11:40 PM I've been known to do the song myself when the notion takes me. Larry, your last paragraph sums it all up I think, and it appears that the chickens are now coming home to roost. I don't think the suggested expulsion of Russia from the Council of Europe will make one button of difference to the situation; Kofi Anaan said that he "Understands the necessity for military action". That sort of means it's OK doesn't it? The difference between Russia and lets say, Yugoslavia is that Russia has the BOMB and, judging by their intransigence in matters of domestic policy don't really mind whose noses they put out of joint in the process of carrying it out. We can only sit back and watch. (_gargoyle can read about it in the papers). Nearly time to head for the mountains, lads. B. |

Well sin e doigh, Brendy, a bhic! Slan agus bennacht Larry |

Subject: RE: Do you think the Russian's want war? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 28 Jan 00 - 01:08 AM My analogy for the nuclear countries, who constantly played their games of threat/counterthreat, was that of two men armed with hand grenades, each stuck in the same telephone booth, and watching closely so the other guy doesn't get in a first strike. Nothings really changed- just more guys, more grenades. |

Subject: RE: Do you think the Russian's want war? From: GUEST,Big Mick Date: 28 Jan 00 - 06:50 PM For those of you who think that this isn't about music, I will bet you money we will all be singing about this in no time flat. Wise up, music is about issues. Issues are about people. People are who we sing to, and try to raise their consciousness on issues. Mick |
