Took Latin & German from 7th grade on through high school, but it doesn't show much now.*BG* I had Spanish when I was in grade school, briefly, then picked up more about 8yrs ago when my husband was working in Venezuela and I had to bill them in Spanish! Really interesting...I called a piece of equipment a "fur coat" one time! I have picked up a few phrases in French which I recognise and the Latin helps with a lot. I told Rog about this thread and SP, last night, then for the first time, he tells me about an ancestor who was supposed to've given the Plains of Abraham to Quebec City a long time ago! I'm with Blue Jay on wishing I could remember the 2nd & 3rd languages I once knew, as well as you write English, SP, and you, French, CW. My husband's father came from Isle Verte on the St Laurent near Quebec (still has relatives there) and so, Roger was raised learning in French in the monrings at school and English in the afternoons, but he is pretty rusty at it anymore, with no one to practise with. I have never known a dull day (though I would have liked one or two, heaven knows). I still find it hard to believe that there are such knowledgeable, nice people who are prepared to search like hell for information; including professional musicians who will talk about what they love, to anyone here who sincerely asks. As a scholar in other fields, I particularly admire the music discussions, which have opened whole realms of understanding to me. But it is the give-and-take of community life that really keeps me here. I can't believe that I know people in Iceland, Wyoming, Australia, Argentina, Yorkshire, Belgium well enough so that we could start our first face-to-face conversation half way through. I am constantly amazed that I can come here every day, and check into this wide world of crazy, wise people. I have only met a tiny (wonderful) fraction of the people that are here. My idea of a good time would be to wander around meeting most of the rest of them -- and, Allah willing, I will some time. It is the best. yours, Peter T. |

I think that GUEST-CLETUS amply demonstrated that most mudcatters will understand your postings no matter HOW many misspellings, typos etc there are. You stated at first that you don't write very often, but following this thread I see that you are becoming bolder. Excellent. Each new voice is a new resource. I am also new at MUDCAT, but I think that these resources and just plain folks are what it's aall about. You may know something I don't know and vice versa. These MUCATTERS are an amazing group. They have not failed yet to answer any music related question I've submitted, usually within a few hours. And as you have discovered, (concerning the keyboard characters), Mudcatters are an invaluable computer resource as well. I was thinking of a MUDCAT CONVENTION, but that would be very difficult, especially considering we already have one at our fingertips. Sorry for rambling, but as I said, I'm a Newbie. |

Some postings now have no words in them at all, and these are obviously the true models to which we should all aspire! Ah, I think I will go look at the early postings of some of my new friends and see... no, I think I'll stick to now. I don't know exactly the meaning of «blabby» (neither my dictionnary), but i made a post for the thread «on being a new member...» and we're now talking of keyboard and accent... So here it is: my keyboard is configured for french canada, so it's really easy to type accent - the english or american keyboard configuring is quite esoteric for me. I know there's a so-call «universal» that should allow you to type every strange character you want - ASCII Character. For example, in theory, if you press «alt», 9, 2 (keep holding «alt»), you sould have a backslash (\). (But that doesn't work as I'm trying it...). Maybe a research for ASCII on the net could give you the answer. I don't think I know «Grand-mère». Do you have a verse? SP |
