Subject: Dave Bromberg - Don't let the Glasses
From: GUEST,Brendy - in the mountains
Date: 23 Feb 00 - 01:08 AM

About 10 years ago (maybe more), there was a series on RTÉ (Irish Television), called 'Live at the Forum', The 'Forum', I think is in Montreal or Toronto.

But, Dave Bromberg was on one week along with a MEAN John Sebastian who mostly played Harp (the blues variety).
I videoed the whole series, but as you can probably appreciate, things get misled when you have drifted as much as I have.

Anyway, the point is that Dave and John did a song that night called (I think) "Don't let the glasses fool you
(stand beside me when you measure my size)"

Does anybody recognise this?.
It goes on....
"Don't let false ..??..overrule your better judgement,
One of these days you might come to realise"
You would make one happy little camper if you could help me out on this one!!!

Brendy

Brendy- In the mountains,

The song is called "Demon In Disguise", one of my favorite Bromberg tunes. Here is my interpretation:

DEMON IN DISGUISE
David Bromberg

 E F#
Don't let the glasses fool you.
A B
Stand beside me when you measure my size.
E F#
Don't let false estimations overrule you,
A B E
Soon even you may come to realize,
A
I've been a wizard, since my childhood,
B E
And I have earned some respect for my art.
F#
I rule the spirits, that live in the wildwood,
A B
And every evening I talk to the stars.

I stand tall with the unseen power,
So why should I be scared of you?
I could fill your house with flowers,
And I could poison all your mirrors too.
I've been a wizard since my childhood,
And I have earned some respect for my art.
I rule the spirits that live in the wildwood,
And every evening I talk to the stars.

Break

I know we all have sisters and brothers,
But don't you take me to be just one more.
I know you've dealt this way with many others,
But here I come to try and even out the score.

A
Well, I really think, you should have guessed by now,
B
That I'm demon, in disguise.
E
You just seem a little behind the rest somehow.
F#
You missed all the clues,
A B
That showed the truth to the wise.

Repeat First Verse

P.S.- Looking again at the lyrics that you remember, (slightly different than mine), I realized it's VERY possible that he sang it that way when you saw him. David Bromberg has a very comfortable lyrical style, and has alway improvised freely. I got the words off of a "Best of David Bromberg" CD. It's a shame that his great first album seems to be out of print.

Also, the chord placement is approximate. But I feel that you remember the song well enough to get it. The last time I tried to put the chords ABOVE the proper syllable, all the chords shifted to the left margin. I don't know why, I used the line breaks, and spaces between the chords. So this time I just put the chords in front of the word where the change occurs, even though it's not as exact. Enjoy the tune. I do.

So how could one get a copy of the white Dave Bromberg album with the line drawing and "Boggy Road to Midgeville" with Norman Blake,"Sammy's Song" and "Delia's Gone"?

I'd like to know, too. I think it's out of print. I haven't been able to find it. If you are able to, PLEASE post a thread.

I have one, if somebody's desperate.

I've been able to fill out my Bromberg collection lately using eBay.

Thanks Bluejay.
Right on the mark. Yeah, I'm sure Bromberg was improvising all over the place that night. And no better man!!!

I have the guitar part, no problem; I made a point at the time to replay that tape so often that I wouldn't miss one nuance.
I did have the words off also, but, you know the way it goes when you don't do a song for a while. It's a case of 'I have all the words, but not in the right order'

Thanks again
Brendy.

Really excellent (I think) performance video.

Shouldn't this song have been used as the main theme for the Harry Potter movies? Who screwed up?

Peter.
