Subject: ADD Verse: old apple tree in the orchard From: murray Date: 10 Jun 97 - 02:16 AM I have words & music of this song, "The Old Apple Tree in the Orchard", but am looking for background--where's it from, etc. To remind you, I may as well post the words. O the old apple tree in the orchard Lives in my memory; It reminds me of my Pappy, He was handsome young and happy When he planted the old apple tree. [chorus] Say G'bye, say G'bye, Say G'bye to the old apple tree [repeat lines 3-5; this happens with each stanza] Then one night Pappy took widow Norton Out on a jamboree When he brought her home at sun-up Brother Norton raised his gun up And he chased Pappy up in the tree. When the neighbours came after my Pappy Up in the tree was he Then they took a rope and strung him By the neck and then they hung him From a branch of the old apple tree. Now my poor Pappy lies in the orchard Out of his misery If my Pappy had a' know'd it He never woulda grow'd it 'Cos he died on the old apple tree. [Any more verses, by the way??] |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE OLD APPLE TREE From: katlaughing Date: 20 Nov 99 - 02:49 AM This one fell by the wayside the other day, due to duplicate SFTD threads, so rather than bring it up with the wrong date and confuse everybody, I am resubmitting it: I'll get the tune sent to Alison later today. This is another I learned from my sister. It's a lot of fun to sing, fairly fast-paced. Didn't find it in the DT, so hope I am not being redundant. OLD APPLE TREE
Oh, the old apple tree in the orchard

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Old Apple Tree (Scholl, Jerome) From: GUEST,Ron Date: 25 Feb 06 - 05:22 PM The last verse is; They put the apples in a basket cut the tree down for a casket now my poor pappy lies in the tree (chorus) Say goodbye. Say goodbye Say goodbye to the ol' apple tree Had my pappy ever know'd it He'd a never, never grow'd it For he died on the old apple tree. ...learned that from my dad back in the early 40's. It was fun times; all of us singin' that song together. I don't think that happens much anymore.....too bad. Can you imagine an audience in a movie theater today all singing along to the bouncing ball?! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Old Apple Tree (Scholl, Jerome) From: GUEST,guama Date: 28 Mar 08 - 04:58 PM This is the version I learned from my mother in the 1940s. The differences are few but important, I think. I used to cry every time she sung it because I connected it with my Father being away in the war. It was years before I figured out what Pappy's offense was. Oh, that old apple tree in the orchard Lives in my memory. It reminds me of my Pappy He was handsome, young and happy, When he planted that old apple tree Now one day Pappy took widder Norton Out on a jamboree When he brought her home at sunup Brother Norton took his gun up And he chased Pappy up in that tree. When the neighbors came after my Pappy Up in the tre-ee was he. They took a rope and then they hung him By the neck and then they strung him To a branch of that old apple tree. Say goodbye, Say goodbye, Say goodbye to that old apple tree If my Pappy hadda knowed it, He'd be sorry that he growed it For he died with that old apple tree! Now my Pappy lies out in the orchard Out of his mi-isery They put the apples in a basket Chopped the tree down for a casket And my poor Pappy died with that tree Say goodbye, say goodbye, say goodbye to that old apple tre-e-e-e If my Pappy hadda knowed it He'd be sorry that he growed it For he died with that old apple tree! |
