JOY ACROSS THE LAND (Alex Hassilev)

You can tell the world about this,
You can tell the nations about that,
Tell it to the sea and the sky,
Tell it to the birds on the fly,
Tell it to the breeze blowing by ,
There is joy, joy, joy across the land.

We saw a farmer working on his farm,
We saw two lovers walking arm and arm,
From sea to sea and all across the land
We saw joy, joy, joy on every hand.

You can tell the world about this,
You can tell the nations about that,
Tell it to the sea and the sky,
Tell it to the birds on the fly,
Tell it to the breeze blowing by ,
There is joy, joy, joy across the land.

You know that hard times happen to us all,
And though our backs are up against the wall,
Still we'd like for you to understand
There is joy joy joy on every hand

You can tell the world about this,
You can tell the nations about that,
Tell it to the waves on the shore,
Tell it to the rich and the poor,
Tell it to your neighbor next door<
That there is joy joy joy across the land.

So when you hear a newborn baby cry,
Or when you watch the moon go sailing by,
The time will come when you will understand,
That there is joy joy joy on every hand.

You can tell the world about this,
You can tell the nations about that,
Tell it to the sea and the sky,
Tell it to the birds on the fly,
Tell it to the breeze blowing by ,
Tell it to the rich and the poor,
Tell it to your neighbor next door<
Tell it every day more and more
There is joy, joy, joy across the land.

This is a Limeliter remake of the old spiritual:
You can tell the world about this
You can tell the nations about that
Tell them what the Master has done
Tell them that the victory's been won
He brought joy, joy, joy into my heart.
I saw Bob Gibson do it on the old Hootenanny show.

I got called away before i could add any information about the song. As Bud pointed out the chorus is a pretty direct lifting of the Gibson-Camp "You Can Tell the World" changing some words. Since Gibson-Camp traded on an old spiritual, I guess that's fair. There are at least two Limeliters recording of the song. The lyrics I transcribed are from a 1976 concert in Seattle. that recording is found on the CD "Glenn Yarbrough & the Limeliters, Joy Across The Land" released in 1993 (GNP/Crescendo GNPD 2219). The song is also on a LP called "Glnn Yarbrough & The Limeliters, Reunion" (1974 Stax Records STS-5513). The LP version is from a 1973 concert in Chicago. The CD actually contains 12 tracks from the Chicago concert including a couple that are on the LP. Both "Joy Across The Land" and "Acres of Limeliters" are on the Chicago LP and the CD but the CD tracks are from the Seattle concert. That's probably more than any one really needed to know.

Yes, Rich, but there is a third recording by the Limeliters--probably actually the first in time--on their album "Sing Out!"

Bud, good point. Sometimes I quit searching when I find find what I'm after. I went for the CD for obvious reasons in the title. That connected me to the album from the same concert. Since the CD format is the easiest to pause frequently and transcribe from, I used it. And I didn't look for any more versions. When I am paying attention to what I type, I try to include weasle words that allow for additional data as it becomes available. Sometimes I forget. I see I did have the "atleast" qualifier above. that's the good thing about the mudcat, people add the bits and pieces of what they know and ideally a fairly complete picture can emerge. Your knowing that the song was on the Sing Out album is especially important because I think that album was/is more widely known than the two that I cited. I suppose the next question to ask is "Did they change any lyrics between versions?"

Hey, the version on Simon & Garfunkel's Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. is attributed to B.Gibson and B.Camp. It may well be their only album that doesn't attribute every song to P.Simon (well, he didn't claim credit for "Bye Bye Love" and "Anji").

No, Rich, the verses above are the way they appear on the "Sing Out" album, to my recollection.
