I'm looking for lyrics to a song titled "A Bridle Hanging On The Wall." Sung by Wilf Carter and then recorded by Carson Robison and his pioneers in 1978 at Glendale Records - the album is called "Immortal Carson Robison". I don't know if it is considered Country Western or Folk Music.

You'll find a bit about Wilf Carter at this site Hope I got my HTML right...;)

Now, Carson Robison - your date is a re-record - my first recollections are of him on 78rpm records - ca late 20s from memory. There's a discography (agian hope I got my HTML thingies right.

I haven't the time to follow the line at the moment - follow it up. Hope I got the site right for you....

I've done a quick flick through the Robison discography - wheww.. memories flooding back...;)

I should packing my bags to go to town,

An old songbook tells me that Carson J Robison wrote the words and music in 1936.

I remember the German version (this is for Joe Offer):
"Es haengt ein Pferdehalfter an der Wand".
Can't give you the second line because for as long as I can remember I followed it (silently) with
"Und mein Pony haengt gleich nebenan."
I've never been partial to tearjerkers!

I listened to the recording at the Record Lady's site, and Frank Maher's transcription, posted above, is perfect as far as it goes, but Frank omitted the spoken part that comes after the last verse:

In 1938, when I was 4, I sang this song to my grandfather who cried
remembering Sam and Prince, his team of horses that he had to put down.
I remembered most of the words, but now I have them all.

It was a song that an old lady who used to look after my dog used to sing -I'd never heard it before, and hadn't looked it up. She was a farmers daughter and hadn't ridden a pony since she was a girl. she is no longer with us so has also gone where the good doggie minders go.

In South Africa one of the official languages, "Afrikaans" (from the Dutch) is the most spoken. When I was a kid, my father - a farmer and great horseman - often sang this song to me. He actually lost his faithful "President" and the bridle and saddle were still hanging in the stable for many years afterwards. In recent years a local Afrikaans singer, Dozi, rerecorded this song that was originally translated and sung by Chris Blignault way back then. Memories of the heart!

Dis die saal van my getroue ou dier
(Its the saddle of my faithful old animal)

Why they preferred to use "saal" (saddle)in stead of "toom" (bridle) is unknown. Is there someone who still remembers the Afrikaans version?

That one goes back a long way, my mother used to sing snatches of a Dutch version that was quite popular from the late forties and during the fifties.
