I ordered the book "Rev. Gary Davis/Blues Guitar" by Stefan Grossman, Oak Publ. and Grossman tells me it is out of print and the prognosis for it re-appearing is not good. Does anyone have a copy they would like to sell second-hand or...well contact me by email.

I have the CD that goes with it, so I only need the book.

Murray

Murray,

That's really weird — my son just gave me that book for Christmas. I don't know where he got it, but I'll e-mail him and ask. He's living in the San Francisco area and I think he found it in a music store there or in Cleveland, Ohio.

Just a thought — are you asking for the right book? The RGD is in Stefan Grossman's "Masters of the Blues" series — the others in it being Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller and Lonnie Johnson.

If you're really looking for a few specific songs, I wouldn't mind copying them and putting them in snail-mail for you. Just send me a personal message thru the M'Cat.

Thanks Dave. The book I am after is not in the "Masters of the Blues" series--it is older. However I will look into that one. I have the Hurt book and it is pretty good. I will look into the one for Gary Davis.

How do you get in touch with Stephan Grossman? I knew him in Greenwich Village 40 years ago. A great guitarist then!

I also had the rare pleasure of attending a service given by Rev. Davis. I was working in a small factory in the Bronx, in New York City, There was a store front church next door. One day, in the middle of the afternoon, I heard incredible singing coming from the church. I went in, and it was the Rev. A small man, a little hard of hearing, only a few people on rough benches in the dimly-lit church. But he made the walls shake. He shook me. God rest his soul.

If you are talking about the old Oak Publications book. I found it in the public library, a year or so ago, and I oredered the cassette from Stefan Grossman, just before he discontinued it. Stefan has two new Rev. Gary Davis books on his Web site, doesn't he? Maybe you'll find what you are looking for there.

Murray,

Sorry, the book I have is the Masters series one. Didn't realize there was an older one.

I'm sure Elderly Instruments (check at elderly.com has the newer one or can order it for you (make sure you order thru Mudcat, so Max will get a little cash).

Of course the offer above still holds, if you need it.

I'm pretty sure you can get ahold of Mr. Grossman from http://guitarvideos.com/. The phone number is on the site. I contacted him from there and he got back to me right away.

Yes Easy Rider, I mean the old Oak publication. I checked out some local libraries and some not so local and nobody seems to have them. I have the cassette but not the book. Grossman still has some cassettes. Phil, my experience is the same as Max's. Grossman is very good at answering email enquires. You can send him an email from the site Max gives or his email address is:

GtrWorkShp@aol.com

You are a lucky man to have heard him that way. Did you say he was a small man? I always imagined him large, because he seemed to have such a good finger span.
