Subject: Whats with all the penguins? From: Barky Date: 19 Mar 00 - 01:31 AM Seriously, folks! Why is it that seemingly every thread starts with "Penguin" today? I like penguins as much as the next person and all, but, don't you think this is a bit, um... obsessive? (*BG*) But really... why penguin? ~Barky |

Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Alan of Australia Date: 19 Mar 00 - 01:47 AM G'day, The Penguin threads have nothing to do with Linux, they are inspired by Ed Pellow who provided all the tunes (in MIDI format) for The Penguin Book Of English Folk Songs, edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd. As I have a copy of the book and a scanner I'm providing words where the DT doesn't have this version. The Penguin threads are all linked, so that doing a forum search on 'penguin' will find all the songs, and the tune for each song. Go into a thread & follow some of the links & you'll see what I mean.

Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Mar 00 - 04:26 AM Penguin has published some seriously wonderful songbooks. The English one (1959) was published in 1959, edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L. Lloyd; and the Canadian one (1973) was edited by Edith Fowke. I don't know anything about the editors of the Australian songbooks, Volume 1 (1964), by J.S. Manifold; and Volume 2 (1980), Bill Scott. I just got the second Australian book this week, and I'm still gloating. These books are real treasures. Alan is doing us a great service by posting the songs and tunes from the English book. I'm hoping he'll do Australia after that. Thanks a lot, Alan. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Amos Date: 19 Mar 00 - 03:05 PM Yes, the rise of Linux is a major astrological event, Felipa, and it was foretold by ancient prophets as the sign of a new era. I wouldn't be surprised if even the icecaps hate Windows... |
Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Bob Bolton Date: 19 Mar 00 - 11:47 PM G'day, Amos - I hope you realise that the Greenhouse Effect (first re-associated with global warming in the 1880s) is originally what happens to a closed building with (glass) windows (eg, a garden greenhouse). Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Arkie Date: 20 Mar 00 - 12:24 AM Alan, thanks for the additions from the Penguin songbook. The data base will be all the richer. That is bound to be a labor of love. The midis are a plus for those of us who are weak in the sight reading department and those who do not have access to the music. |

Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Peter T. Date: 20 Mar 00 - 03:55 PM We did a great skit at the Edinburgh Festival fringe one year doing recitations from "The Spanish Book of Penguin Verse", "The Italian Book of Penguin Verse", and so on. In penguin with national accents. Back hand clapping too. Ah, youth. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Mar 00 - 03:56 PM Ah, Peter, I needed that! |
Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 20 Mar 00 - 05:56 PM Well what about Les Barkers' great literary classic, the English book of Penguin Folk songs? That has some great poems in it, and if I can bring it in from out of the toilet, I'd give you some titles. OK, my secret is out, I keep the poetry books in the bathroom.... - people were spending far too much time in there with novels and newspapers - poetry is much better, short, snappy and to the point, unless you are in there for a protracted bout of Ancient Mariners..... but anyway, the English book of Penguin folksongs has been well thumbed, and deserves to be more widely known. Subject: RE: Whats with all the penguins? From: Tim Salt Date: 21 Mar 00 - 04:37 PM Alan I think you are doing a brilliant job. I told you in a threa a while ago that I would love a copy of the Penguin Boook Of English Folk Songs but couldn't get one. The fact that you can provide the midi files is great! Llanfair Backless, dog eared - I'd be honoured to give it a good home. Tim |
