MP3 Library

I've just done a search (using google)looking for
"traditional folk mp3" and I've been pointed to the
Mudcat MP3 Library. The link takes me to the Mudcat
front page but I can't see a link to this library.

Does it exist ?

I haven't seen one, but we DO have a mudcat midi page (see quicklinks above)

Gary, you have to work a little harder. Somehow I don't think this feature (which I've never heard of) is a public access thing, since the Mudcat is sensitive to copyright concerns which have provoked some rather silly threats from certain music publishers' lawyers (for posting just lyrics, not MP3's). Many of us submit MP3's of our own recordings (original and trad) to the Mudcat for Mudcat Radio, which is probably what the Mudcat MP3 Library is, but that does not include as far as I know blanket permission to post them for download. (although many could be had for the asking, if you knew who to ask and what to ask for...) For specifics ask Max, ([e-mail]) he's the proprietor of the Cat, and a pretty swell guy too.

I was puzzled when the search engine pointed me back home (as it were). I was sure I would have heard of an MP3 library if there were one.

My search is for the more traditional music of which I don't know much as I grew up with 'revivalist' folk mainly and only know the trad stuff done by Fairport, Steeleye and others of that ilk.

There must be athread somewhere that can point me at Cds that will give me grounding in the 'standard traditional' repetoir.

Go to MP3.Com and search for folk/world tradition music - a lot of it is traditional (and a lot isn't) but there are several hundred titles to choose from.

But if you want to get into traditional repertoire, you have to specify what tradition! Fairport and Steeleye and their (dozens of) personnel over the decades have amassed a pretty fair discography of English/Scottish folk tradition--particularly Martin Carthy and Maddy Prior (June Tabor? she must have done a spell with one of em, mustn't she?). And look for recordings by The Copper Family, Jeannie Robertson, Archie Fisher, Ray Fisher, Cilla Fisher & Artie Tresize, Ewan MacColl, early Dick Gaughan (No More Forever). Quite a bias towards Scottish singers there since that's what I know (I'm a Cameron fer godsakes).

What makes it worthwhile to search out these folks' recordings is that you will get the standards and quite a bit more, which is where the fun starts IMHO.

Only heard of McColl and Gaughan out of the list of recordings, so there's an education to be had here.

Songs rather than instrumentals from before the folk revival, and preferably in english so I can understand them ! I prefer to sing english songs (being english with a hint of irish) I have enough trouble with Redemption Songs (I seem to drift into a caribean type accent).

Yup, all primarily singers. Jeannie Robertson and Copper Family are the two pre-revival genuine living-oral-history names from the list. Jeannie Robertson was a Traveller--if you can't find recordings of her, Ray Fisher has recorded much of her material.

If you want sea shanties, look for books and recordings by Stan Hugill (d 1991). I was fortunate enough to see him perform at the Mystic Sea Music Festival the year before he died--he was a genuine shantyman who actually shipped on the Cutty Sark, among many others, during his exceptionally colourful maritime career which started about 1920. The godfather of the sea music scene.
