i was listening to heebie.jam which is done by Louis Armstrong's hot 5. The file is found at www.redhotjazz.com/hot5.html and is absolutely wonderful. However, i cannot quite make out the lyrics to the song. Does anyone know where i can find the lyrics online? If i find them, i'll post them here.

i'm working on mama's little baby. Thanks again for the lyrics help. You guys are positively top shelf! If i record it, will send you an mp3 or something of it. - chris

The song didn't have lyrics until the day of the recording, Louis made up a verse and "scatted" the second chorus. The great Mr. Armstrong didn't always remember song lyrics while performing and often scat sang just because, well, he didn't remember the words. In keeping with that spirit, I'd suggest you just have fun singing about the "Heebie Jeebies" and not worry about getting the words right, 'cuz they aint no "right" lyrics.

Frank i.t.s.

Try here:
The Heebie Jeebies for transcriptions of Louis' version.
(UK blues singer George Melly does it too)
Enjoy

Oh, hell, here they are:

THE HEEBIE JEEBIES
Transcribed from vocals by Louis Armstrong, recorded 2/26/26,
From Louis Armstrong, Hot Fives & Hot Sevens, the 25 Greatest; Living Era AJA 5171.

Say, I've got the heebies,
I mean the jeebies,
Talking about
The dance, the heebie jeebies,
Do, because they're boys,
Because it pleases me to be joy!

Say, don't you know it?
You don't know how, don't be blue,
Someone will teach you;
Come on, and do that dance,
They call the heebie jeebies dance,
Yes, ma'am,
Papa's got the heebie jeebies dance!

Skatting...

Say, come on, now, and do that dance,
They call the heebie jeebies dance.

I think George Melly used the Ethel Waters version which is on the site referred to in the previous posts.

...And this is the Ethel Waters version which makes more sense lyrically:
HEEBIE JEEBIES
Transcribed from vocals by Ethel Waters and an unknown vocalist, recorded July 29, 1926.
From Ethel Waters 1925-1926, The Chronogical Classics, vol. 672.

Folks, today I got the blues,
Tried tonight, I just can't lose,
And the feelin' that I want to dance,
I'm warnin' you in advance!
But keep you from bein' in doubt,
I'm gonna tell you what it's all about:

Say, I got the heebies,
I mean the jeebies;
I'm talkin' about
Those heebie jeebie blues,
That they call it, boys,
Mix it in with a little bit of joy!
Say, don't you know it,
You should be shown these naughty blues,
I wanna teach you, so come on,
To do that dance,
They call the heebie jeebies!
Yes, ma'am!
Yes, mama's got to do the heebie jeebies dance!

[Spoken]
Oh, play it, Mister Lorence!
Hmmm, ain't it grand, ain't it grand!
Aaah, lord!

Oh, I got!
I'm talkin'!
About those heebies!
Lord, mix it in with a little bit of joy!
Say, don't!
Should be shown!
Just come on down, do that dance,
Called the heebie jeebies,
Yes, ma'am!
Mama's got to do the heebie jeebies dance!
Aaaw, I got to do that dance!

Jim Kweskin incorporated it into a medley with "IF I COULD SHIMMY LIKE MY SISTER KATE," which is in the Digital Tradition here..

Well I've got the heebies, I mean the jeebies
Talking about, I got the heebie-jeebies
Hey, every girl and boy
I get hip with a little bit of joy
Hey don't you know it, don't you feel good
Come on down, someone'll teach you
Come on and do that dance
They call the heebie-jeebie dance
Sweet mama, papa's got the heebie-jeebie dance
