Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'll just sing the blues for you? From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Jun 03 - 11:40 PM Various sites say "I'll Play the Blues for You" was written by Jerry Beach. An mp3 file of a performance by the Jerry Beach Band can allegedly be heard at this page, but it didn't work for me. AMG lists about 35 albums that contain a performance by Albert King, and about 20 that contain performances by other people. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'll just sing the blues for you? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 13 Jun 03 - 03:53 AM Funnily enough, at Jagz last night Sam Kelly's new band Primo Blu opened with guitarist TJ Johnson singing that very song. Sorry, I didn't transcribe it! Despite the title and the blues credentials of Sam (who's played with everyone including Sonny Black, Papa George and Glenn Headley)and TJ, the band played mostly soul clasics which Herself would have loved if she'd come with me (that'll larn 'er)sung by an excellent young singer, Loretta something (like a skinny Ruby Turner),who Sam met while he was playing in the pit band for "125th Street". Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S GOTTA BE A CHANGE (G Collins) From: Merritt Date: 17 Jun 03 - 11:36 AM I'm familiar with a variant of this song that is credited to Gwendolynn Collins, wife of the late, great Albert Collins. She calls the song Gotta Be A Change or There's Gotta Be A Change. The verses fit a standard 12-bar blues medium-tempo chord structure. The brief bridge (in key of E) climbs and then drops along lines of E/E7/A/Bb/E-B7-E. I play this on guitar in "E" w/ capo on the second fret, i.e., F# and it works well as an alternating bass finger-picking tune. Here are the lyrics I can hear on Johnny Lang's cover of the song: THERE'S GOTTA BE A CHANGE (Gwendolynn Collins) Oh, there's got to be a change Things just can't stay the same (repeat) If I got any worse off I'd have myself to blame I've played the blues so long now There ain't nothin' left for me to do (repeat) I just can't give it up If I do my life would be through BRIDGE: Well now I've been to Kentucky, Chicago too All over St. Louis, ain't nothin left to do But I'll play the blues for you Well I've been down to Texas To the end of the national revenue I ain't got no money now, honey now Ain't nothin' left to do Well I'll play the blues for you - Merritt |
