SILVER WHISTLE (Graham & Eileen Pratt, Early Birds sleeve notes – a reworking of Flora MacNeill's Gaelic waulking song celebrating the homecoming of Bonny Prince Charlie) Who will play the silver whistle When my king comes home again Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo Sailing in the finest vessel Masts of silver and ropes of silk Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo When he lands upon the shoreline He will greet his faithful men Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo Not a girdle scone I'll make him Finest bread and choicest wine Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo Charles with eyes so blue beguiling Welcome home you son of kings Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo Let the fiddler play you welcome Let the piper play you home Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo Who will play the silver whistle Maybe I myself shall play Hi ri liu hill eo Hi ri liu hill eo |

Subject: RE: corrections to lyrics listings? From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Apr 00 - 04:28 PM Hi, Jenithea - I "harvested" the Silver Whistle lyrics for submission to the Digital Tradition. Since there's already a version in the database, Dick Greenhaus (chief high honcho in charge), may or may not include the versions you and Malcolm submitted. However, the lyrics are now in the Forum, and available to anybody who might want to look. You really should consider buying a copy of Peter Kennedy's book. It's a real treasure, even if it does cost $45. Now that you've registered as a member of Mudcat, you can deposit your Mudcat cookie on any computer you wish. Congratulations on your first double post! **BG** It is possible to be signed up with the same name on two computers at once. I have it on one of my computers at work and my computer at home. I think I went to Reset Cookie (on the Quick Links menu at the top of the page). It's been so long since I did it that I'm unsure of the details. (Getting older is SO much fun!) Welcome to the bunch! jeffp |
Subject: RE: corrections to lyrics listings? From: GUEST,jenithea@jenithea.com Date: 24 Apr 00 - 02:53 PM Thanks, Spaw! Actually, last night I did finally figure that out and signed up, but right now I am at work! I wasn't sure if I should try signing up from both places or not. I thought it might not let me sign up from two different machines with the same user name. But I suppose I could give it a try and find out. --js

Subject: RE: corrections to lyrics listings? From: Gary T Date: 24 Apr 00 - 11:40 AM Jenithea, as to your question about submitting and/or correcting lyrics, I don't know the answer but I know where to find it. Click on "Help" at the menu going across the top of the page (starts with "Lyrics, Forum and Chat"; "Radio"; etc.). You can post the question there, and someone knowledgeable should respond. |
Subject: RE: corrections to lyrics listings? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 24 Apr 00 - 11:29 AM Thanks, Malcolm. Actually, there is another book, which has some OTHER verses that I mentioned. I have both somewhere, and one of these days will set it up as an HTML document. Once I type them all in. Both are LENGTHY and was probably one song where verses got left out somewhere along the way. |
Subject: ADD: An Fhideag Airgid From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 24 Apr 00 - 10:59 AM It is indeed in Kennedy's book. To save George a trip to the library:
CO SHEINNEAS AN FHÌDEAG AIRGID? (O Who Will Play The Silver Whistle?)
Co shinneas an fhìdeag airgid?
Mac mo Rìgh-sa dol gu fairge
Deanamh deas gu tighinn a dh'Alba
Air long mhór air bhàrr na fairge
Air long mhór nan trì chrann airgid
Sreangannan dha'n t-sìoda Fhrangach
Ulagan óir air gach ceann dhiubh
Nuair thig mac mo Rìgh gu fearann
A'cur fàilt' air Mac'ic Ailein
'S air Mac Dhomhnaill Mhor na Ceapaich
'S air Mac Dhomhnaill Dhuibh Loch Abar
Nuair thig mac mo Rìgh-sa dhachaidh
Cha b'e biadh dha breachdan teine
Ach bacastair gu deanamh arain
Teàrlach óg nan gorm shùil meallach
Fàilte, fàilte, muirn is clià dhut
Fìdhleireachd is rogha ciuil dhut
Co shinneas an fhìdeag airgid?
Co chanadh nach seinninn fhìn i?
The above is Flora MacNeil's full version (she said that there were others in Barra); she may be heard singing it on Songs in Scottish Gaelic (Folktracks cassette) and on Craobh nan Ubhal (Temple Records COMD1002 ). Prior and Tabor modified the translation a little, presumably in the interests of singability. They took it at a slightly slower pace, and with a looser rhythm, than did MacNeill. They also seem to have altered the melody a bit, so I shall send a midi of the transcription in Kennedy's book to the Mudcat Midi Site. The version on the DT has the appearance of having been transcribed from memory without the benefit of the printed lyric insert that came with my copy of the Silly Sisters record. |
Subject: RE: corrections to lyrics listings? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 24 Apr 00 - 07:08 AM It's actually a Gaelic song translated into English. I'll have to look it up, but I think it was listed (17 verses, perhaps) in Folksongs of the British Isles. I'll go to the library this week and check it out for sure. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SILVER WHISTLE ^^ From: GUEST,jenithea@jenithea.com Date: 23 Apr 00 - 10:11 PM Hi... Is there a way to submit corrections to the lyrics in the database? I searched on "Silver Whistle" and noticed that the lyrics you have for that song contain several errors, or at least differences from the liner notes I have for the album the song comes from... according to your lyrics listing it is taken from "Silly Sisters" by Maddy Prior & June Tabor, yet what you have differs noticeably from what is on that album's liner notes. Anyway, if anybody wants to update the lyrics for "Silver Whistle," here's what the liner notes contain: -------------- SILVER WHISTLE as performed by Maddy Prior & June Tabor on "Silly Sisters" O, who will play the silver whistle When my king's son to sea is going? To Scotland prepares, prepares his coming, Upon a large ship o'er the ocean. The ship it has three masts of silver With ropes so light of French silk woven Upon each end are fixed golden pulleys To bring my king's son ashore and landed. When my king's son, he comes back home No girdle scones will food be for him, But loaves of bread, bread will be baking, For Charles with eyes so blue enticing. O, welcome to you, Fame and Honour Fiddles and joyous tunes attend you I will be dancing! I will be singing! And I will play the silver whistle. ----------------------------------- ^^ By the way, does anybody know anything about this song? Are you aware of any other recordings of it? This is all the information that is included on the liner notes: "A Jacobite song from Flora MacNeil of Barra, (in Peter Kennedy, Folk Songs of Britain and Ireland, Cassell, 1975) substantially reduced. The tune (following) an ingenious composition by Johnny Moynihan." The paragraph is relatively confusing, but I'm assuming that by "the tune (following)" they mean the whistle solo at the end of the song, not the song itself. Johnny Moynihan is the whistle player on that song on the "Silly Sisters" album. I did find a listing for the book they mention, on Amazon, but at $45 or so I am hoping I can find it in a library... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0711902836/qid=956605169/sr=1-1/103-0788424-0614201 --js Line Breaks <br> added and song harvested ^^ for submission to the database.
