Subject: dinks song From: GUEST,skye Date: 11 May 00 - 07:59 AM I used to have an old Pete Seeger folk song book with a song called Dinks Song (I think). Words were something like "If I had wings like Noah's dove, I'd fly across the water to the one I love, Fare thee well oh honey fare thee well". Does any one know it and where I could find it again? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Mark Clark Date: 11 May 00 - 09:04 AM I remember having to learn that tune for a part in a play many years ago. It seems to me I found it in "the black book," AKA The Folk Songs of North America by John Lomax. "Dink's Song" is also called "Dink's Blues" in some collections. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Easy Rider Date: 11 May 00 - 09:44 AM I had a LP of Burl Ives singing that song, when I was a kid. You might try an old Burl Ives songbook, in the library. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: MAG (inactive) Date: 11 May 00 - 12:02 PM If I had listened To what my Mama said I'd be at home In a feather bed Fare thee well ... I had me a man He was long and tall Moved his body Like a cannonball Fare thee well ... Some of this has to have been used for "Grey Funnel Line." Is in the OTSFM songbook (teaching book.) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Joe Offer Date: 11 May 00 - 02:10 PM Hi - we have the song right here in our world-famous Digital Tradition Folk Song Database - put dink's in the blue search box, or Click here. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Abby Sale Date: 11 May 00 - 02:10 PM Two different songs. The one you want is in the database. "Dink's Song" is in _Folk Song USA_ and both are in _Amer. Bal & F S_. Thing is, there's no original tune for either. "Blues"'s tune was never recorded, it seems. The cylander John recorded "Song" on in 1904 got broken. The well-known, beautiful tune used by everybody is as he remembered it and sang for his family. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Mark Clark Date: 11 May 00 - 05:48 PM Joe, I feel pretty stupid. I actually looked in the DT before posting but I searched on "dink" instead of "dink's" and missed it. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Stewie Date: 11 May 00 - 07:15 PM Rambling Jack Elliott recorded it and it is reissued on 'Ramblin' Jack: The Legendary Topic Masters'. However, he turned it into a man's song and sang only the first 4 verses of the version given in the DT (1, 4, 2, 3 in that order). Given that his protagonist was male, he had to omit the 'apron' verses. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Joe Offer Date: 11 May 00 - 07:40 PM Words with unusual endings can cause database search problems, Mark. Best to use an asterisk for a "wild card" and search for dink* -Joe Offer- |
Subject: ADD: Dink's Blues ^^ From: Joe Offer Date: 11 May 00 - 09:43 PM DINK'S BLUES Some folks say dat de worry blues ain't bad, It's de wors' ol' feelin' I ever had. Git you two three men, so one won't worry you min'; Don' they keep you worried and bothered all de time? I wish to God eas'-boun' train would wreck, Kill de engineer, break de fireman's neck. I'm gwine to de river, set down on de groun', Ef de blues overtake me, I'll jump overboard and drown. Ef trouble was money, I'd be a millioneer, Ef trouble was money, I'd be a millioneer. Worry now an' I won' be worry long, Take a married woman to sing de worry song. Ef I leave here walkin', it's chances I might ride, Ef I leave here walkin', it's chances I might ride. A levee was being built along the Brazos River in Texas. The contractor had brought his mules and his mule-skinners with him from the Mississippi River. But he had neglected to provide one thing— women; and the men were raising Hell all over the bottom, with midnight creeping, their fighting, and their razor play. It was as distinct hindrance to the progress of work on the levee. So it was the contractor went to Memphis, hired a boatload of women, brought them down the river to the levee-camp, and turned them It was not long before every man had a woman in his tent to wash his clothes, cook, draw water, cut firewood, and warm his bed. Dink was one of these women, and twenty-five years ago, after she had downed nearly a quart of gin, she sang these blues. The tune is lost. Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 13 May 00 - 05:10 PM Don't recall where I learned Dink's Song, but it was from some popular 12 string player. Chord progression throughout is C, Em, Am, G. For example:
where / / = One Measure 3/4 Time
C/Em/Am My memory says it was Bob Gibson. Whoever it was, they would eventually speed the song up to 6/8 time and then keep the guitar going and stretch the lyrics back to 3/4. 'Twas very powerful to my young listening ears. Roger in Baltimore (just passin' thru) Preformat commands
(beginning) and
(end) added to space chords. Does that fix it, O long-lost Roger? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 13 May 00 - 05:15 PM Oops. It's been a while since I posted chords and lyrics. This should look better. / / = One Measure 3/4 Time

Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: BrooklynJay Date: 05 Jul 11 - 02:52 PM A male version also turns up as Faretheewell (Dink's Song) on the Limeliters' 1963 album Fourteen 14k Folk Songs, with Glenn Yarbrough singing the lead. Quite lovely to hear, even if it was a bit rewritten. I think they only did three verses, but I'll have to check when I can dig up the album. Jay |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Joe_F Date: 05 Jul 11 - 06:26 PM What on earth is a 14k folk song? 1963 is a bit early for it to mean 14-kilobyte. -- Aha! 14-karat. How vulgar! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: GUEST Date: 26 Aug 12 - 12:06 AM Mike B These are the chords that I've always used for some 50 years or so. There are all sorts of other verses used. DINK'S SONG Traditional C F C If I had wings like Noah's dove Am I'd fly 'cross the river F To the girl I love C G7 C F C Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well That girl I love she's long and tall Moves her body Like a cannon ball Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well On of these days and it won't be long You'll call my name And I'll be gone Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well When I wore my apron low I couldn't keep you From my door Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well Now I wear my apron high I scarcely see you Passing by Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well On those nights in a drizzling rain All round my heart Is an aching pain Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well If I had wings like Noah's dove I'd fly 'cross the river To the girl I love Fare thee well Oh honey, fare thee well |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: MGM·Lion Date: 26 Aug 12 - 12:30 AM DT version gives "Norah's" rather than "Noah's"; and that was how I first learned it - from Sandy Paton when he was over here in late 50s iirc. Did 'Dink' actually sing it with that central 'r', and is that how Lomax recorded it? - or in light of story above of how he broke the cylinder & recreated it from memory, how he remembered it? And are there any other songs in which the name of the ark-builder is thus rendered? That variant doesn't seem to appear on any version above on this thread, but is that perhaps how it should appear? I don't have to hand any of the books ref'd above, to check how they render the name. ~Michael~ |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: dinks song From: Phil Cooper Date: 26 Aug 12 - 12:30 PM Thanks for kind words, Arkie, from 12 years ago. We hadn't intended to record our version. We were at a friend's place in Canada and he wanted to see what we sounded like in a studio he'd set up. We did Dink's as a mic check from Margaret's voice and my guitar. The friend doing the recording starting doing a producer kind of thing and making performance suggestions and we got the final result after about six takes. The flute bit was over dubbed later. I actually got a video of us performing the song at a house concert in 2000,with the producer along playing flute, and managed to post it on youtube a couple years back. My first exposure to the song was from Dave Van Ronk and the Hudson Dusters album. |
