Thanks for this...

What would/will you have inscribed on your headstone? That is, if you want one.

Peace (not RIP yet), Mooh.

What the hell is this around here? "Threads for the Morbid?" Funeral songs.....headstones..........Hey! I got an idea....Let's talk about whether or not you should go with a watertight vault and a sealed casket or cremation....Perhaps something in between would be right. If you go with the coffin, wood or metal...I mean, wood is so much warmer and all. Interior choice? Colorful...or is beige nice because it goes with everything. Do you need underwear when you're dead? Dress clothes or casual? Shall we put things in the casket or not? If you go cremation, are you better off in the wind, on the garden, or on the mantle? Perhaps a Niche in a mausoleum?

Geeziz.......

I've always rather fancied Robert Burns' epitaph 'On a Friend'.

An honest man here lies at rest,
As e'er God with His image blest!
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth;
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd,
Few heads with knowledge so inform'd;
If there's another world, he lives in bliss,
If there is none, he made the best of this.

I hope I live to merit an epitaph like that (if you see what I mean).

Oh hell, you may as well know the rest of it. At my memorial service, I have asked the kids to get someone to recite the last few lines of Thannatopsis, by Willian Cullen Bryant.
..So live that when your summons comes to join that innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious realm, Where each shall take his place in the silent halls of death..
Thou go, not like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon
But sustained by an unfaltering trust,
Approach thy grave like one who wraps the covers of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

*thread creep alert*

Okay, 'Spaw. Ask and ye shall receive. My father and I discussed that particular question on the way home from his sister's funeral last week. Y'see, I'm a firm believer in the whole ashes-to-ashes, dust-to-dust sort of thing. No particular reason, just an instinctive sort of impulse. Just seems more appropriate in the long haul than having my pickle-preserved remains preserved in a concrete vault til long after anything that was really me is long gone. But apparently there's all kinds of places these days where they don't allow you to be planted unembalmed in a pine box so that you can just rot and get eaten by the worms.

So I guess the only worm-digestion option open these days is cremation, which wouldn't be my first choice, but then I could have a bit scattered in the Missouri River in South Dakota, the Zumbro and Mississippi Rivers in Minnesota, and maybe have the rest buried somewhere.

'Course, I come from Wesleyan stock, where it's pretty high-falutin' to have anything more than name, birth and death on a stone, so I haven't thought about "what do you want on your tombstone" much yet. But hey, my family still owns some plots in a little churchyard cemetary near the Zumbro, so I could even have one of those stones with "1963-____" waitin' for me when my number's up.

That the sort of thing you were lookin' for?

Shad

"Oops" Write on my tombstone oops I'm dead.

I used to think I wanted to be creamated but no, I'm too selfish.

A tomb for me is a private place. No shoes or socks an apartment with a big stone mailbox for people to stop by on cloudy days in July after rains, a fresh breeze

and laugh because I'm dead. And it seems so ridiculous.

What would any man have on their headstone?
As you are dear at the time it is NOT your headstone.
BUT perhaps when living, at least the words could be picked to be later chiseled in the stone, so after some thought, I write my own inscription.
No matter if it's never carved, I'll be dead and past careing.
Spider Tom.

I dreamed,
To cheat my Death,
But Death,
It holds the winning hand.
I never tried,
To cheat at Life,
Yet Life,
It turns you back to sand,
I clutched the straws,
I sung each breath,
I lived my life,
And nothing less.

Well, I think I would want my stone to be carved like that yellow happy face that was so popular in the 70s.
You know, the one with two dots for eyes and a big smile.
That is what I would want
I guess they could carve the dots and big smile and then paint them in black. Maybe I could even get my stone painted yellow.
Yep, that is exactly what I would want.
And you could press a button on my stone and a recording would play the tune............

First, I am sorry that the Guest identified only as Guest feels that way. I don't know what else to say about that.

Second, I vote for cremation as I don't care for my useless remains to be taking up premium space at the expense of my family. But if I were going to have a headstone, it would say one of two things: either "We don't rent pigs" or "I can whack that bell if I want to."

Who was it who wanted "I'd rather be here than in Philadelphia!"? And did he get it?
I like touristing in graveyards, there is a really pretty one near Gordonsville, Virginia, which has a very fancy stone saying MOUNTAIN MAN - Born on the Blue Ridge (and a year), died (still blank the last time I looked). I like that one, but the idea of reserving it and having it carved, and placed, years before you die is a little strange to me.

whoops (or maybe a blank tombstone would not be such a bad idea) anyway-- Fields' tombstone has name and dates only. Some literary (?) magazine wrote a number of celebrities in about 1930 asking what they wanted. . . you know Fields' response, the other memorable one was Dorothy Parker who wanted "excuse my dust". As for myself, for some years now I have said it would read "Missed Final Jeopardy"

I can't decide: it's either being laid down in "Forest Lawn", or letting my ashes be blown over the left field wall at Wrigley field, to come to my final resting place, "on Waitland avenue". Really, I think I prefer my headstone to read: "I always wanted to go to sea", tie it to my feet, and throw me in the Atlantic. BlueJay

By the time I'm dead and buried,(I hope) there will probably be digital headstones where one pushes a button on the stone and a prerecorded message of you saying "hey" with your favorite music, maybe a favorite quotation and a montage of pictures of your life will be displayed. And maybe your own personal motto: Music: Maid of Culmore or If I were a Blackbird or Queen of Argyle Personal motto for headstone: "I took the path less traveled by."

I'll be cremated like my parents and I'd like a portion of my remains scattered at the high water mark at Gettysburg, Pa just like I did with a portion of my father's remains.

My sister's ashes were scattered where Narragansett Bay meets Block Island Sound, but a granite bench in her memory has been placed in the family cemetery. It's a pretty place. Children play there sometimes. At one family reunion, a bunch of cousins ended up serenading the departed with a jam session there.
I'd like my name on a bird bath next to that bench. Should the birds poop all over my grave, it would feel as if I were still alive, but I'll take that risk.

I think I would like a little story, or some extensive print about the person on every headstone. I spend a lot of time in cemeteries -- they are often the only places in towns where original tree species still thrive, and there is almost nothing to read on these headstones. Sometimes that is interesting -- you get to conjecture about people by comparing dates, and generations, but I would like some more extensive information about almost everyone. It would be nice: sit by the headstone, and read about the person and their lives, what they thought, whatever. I usually want less information: but in graveyards, I always want more.
yours, Peter T.

Written by my grandfather, Frank Hudson, an old cowboy-rancher in Colorado:

Death is the other end of being born
Life is a gift, you get it free.
Some people are granted the use of it
for a much longer time than others.
But there is not much point in complaining about that.
To me, it seems better to make use of it while you have it.

And, he did

A couple from English headstones:

Beneath this stone, a lump of clay,
Lies Arabella Young,
Who on the twenty-fourth of May,
Began to hold her tongue.

Here lies the body of Martha Elias
Always uneasy and not over pious
She lived to the age of three score and ten
And gave to the worms what she refused to the men.

And a couple from the States:

Under the sod and under the trees
Lies the body of Jonathan Pease.
He is not here, there's only the pod:
Pease shelled out and went to God.

Here lies an Atheist:
All dressed up and no place to go.

A few more here.

Katlaughing, I loved your grandpa Frank Hudson's lines. Here are mine, possibly already in another thread:

Harp on the willow tree, now it is hung.
One man, one faith, one God, to them I clung.
Sweet were the songs of life, now they are sung.
Harp on the willow tree, now it is hung.
