Subject: Does Ewan MacVicar still Visit Mudcat?
From: Scabby Douglas
Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:14 AM

I note from archived threads that Ewan MacVicar contributed in the recent past (last year) to various discussions in the Mudcat.. I haven't seen his name crop up much recently.
Is he OK?
Can anyone tell me where I can mail him?
He's pretty much of an authority on Glasgow songs and singers, and I have a question he may be able to answer.

I can be mailed at Stevencampbellclark@yahoo.com

Thanks a lot

cheers

Hey! I'm not complaining, truly, but gee, guys, when you take an actual musical discussion to e-mail then:

1) the rest of us don't get a chance to learn nuthin'

2) accusations start flying about "driving away" knowledgeble people

okay, maybe I am complaining.

Mario... no problems about raising questions in Mudcat, but the question I wanted to pose has already been floated (twice I think), in the Café, and I got lots of replies but no answers...
I have a copy of Ewan's book on Glasgow songs and he seemed like the very man to assist me in searching for the answer to my question....

So thank you for responding, and if I find the answer, I'll post it and let you know...

Oh, by the way - the question is - Who wrote the song that starts:

"Ever since the day ma dug ate Auntie Bella,
Ah've been winderin just what kind of dug ah've got..."

thank you jon, ewan, and mario.....

I like it here....

oh, THAT one....I found the lyrics and posted them. Don't remember if there was credits with it....the lyrics are here at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=21351&messages=4#231749

the only credit I saw was for "copland"

Tchah!

First off .. profound (and I really mean that!) apologies for flaoting a query and then not following back ofetn enough to check to see if it was answered..

Secondly thank you MMario... for finding and posting

Thirdly thanks you again Ewan and Jon for trying to help me out..

My only excuse is that around that time I was very busy..

But thank you again....

Now I will be able to torment the people at Campsie Folk Club with the whole thing and not just a wee bit of it...

Now I'll have to mail Ewan and call off the hunt...

Thanks again

Three cheers for the Mudcat

Bythe way - the more astute may have noted that my Mudcat handle changed during this from Chantywrassler to Scabby Doug - this was because I recently noticed that there was a frequent Mudcatter (well ... more frequent than me) called chantyranger - and I thought that my nick was a little too close for comfort, and that it might be misinterpreted ... so (end of unnecessary and boring explanation)

Cheers All

Steven C

As I've just told yer man direct, the song was written by Glasgow poet, actor and wit Jimmy Copeland. Not prolific in songwriting, but good sharp stuff. I stole a punch line from anothor of his songs once, to finish off a kids song.

Something like : Oh, says ##, ah'm no deid So instead o gettin buried she got married insteid.

I changed Ewan's e-mail address to a clickable link, so it's less likely to be harvested by the software that collects addresses for Spam e-mail lists. I think it's generally not a good idea to post a person's e-mail address without their permission, although I guess it's well-nigh impossible for us to escape the Spam lists.

If you see a question and you think the person who could answer it might miss the thread, think about sending that person an e-mail or personal message.

Point taken Joe but I had posted nothing that Ewan had not supplied (albiet invisibly). I got the email address by viewing the source, saw what Ewan had attempted and was only trying to supply the correct HTML. As far as I was concerned, as the only reason for the adrress not showing was the incorrect use of angle brackets, it was perfectly in order for me to make what he had already typed visible.

Ah, thanks again to all..

And Ewan has just answered the other part of the question about James Copeland (thanks again Mr McV)..

James Cosmo is his son isn't he? Talented family.

As Ewan has remarked, sharp writing, and an ear for a well-turned phrase...

Great wee song...

Cheers All

Thanks, Joe, for looking out for us as always.

And no sweat, Jon, I'd not have put my email out in full view if I were not ready for consequences. Upon my head be it.

I don't worry too much about spam, I usually delete without viewing on principle anything I don't have a good idea of.

I realised this morning that the song of Jimmy Copeland I 'borrowed from' was called Willie Bee, which used to be performed by Billy Connolly when he was in the Humblebums.

I've a notion they performed together in something or other.

That sucker drove me nuts, too, Mario, both times it was posted. I never could find the lyrics, just references to it. I am glad you found it.

Hey, I'd just like to say what an honour it is to have my actual name (spelt almost correctly) on a thread. And as an added bonus, by saying this I put my name for a few heartbeats up at the very top of the pile. Whhoooeeee!!!
