Don't know whether or not Ed Trickett ever told you, Kendall, but he had surgery for nodes when he was a teen-ager. He's managed to sing a wee bit for the past thirty-five years or so. You'll do it, too! Read George Ward's message again, and take a copy of it to your ENT specialist. Sometimes they don't have time to keep up on their reading about new approaches to old problems.

We'll be singing together again in no time, I'm sure.

I had the same scare some years ago, but was lucky enough to have caught it in time. No malignancy, though, and I certainly wish you the same. Had to remain totally silent for six weeks, which was simply the hardest thing I'd ever done (and one of the best, according to those who ordinarily must listen to me.) My wife and I had to argue with notepads, and strangers think that because you can't talk, you must be an idiot. But almost all my range recovered, and I wish the same to you. Singers out there should be warned to warm up before prolonged vocal exertion. I never did, because it always came easy to me (to sing, not necessarily to sing well). It's as important as stretching before a run. I have no idea if this contributed to your condition, but it seems like a good opportunity to encourage some healthy practices among musicians. This might counteract a few of our more enjoyable unhealthy practices.

Kendall, I haven't met you, but several years ago, I got a copy of your tape and loved your singing. I really like your interpretations of Irish/American old songs. Now, if what you've got ain't malignant (and we're all sure it ain't!!!) then you just might have vocal polyps or nodes. I had them 20 years ago, and they're no big deal -well they really are a big deal to someone who likes to sing - but it's easy to get over them. So do what you have to do , think positively, laugh frequently, and shut the hell up! Then for God's sake make another recording so we can enjoy more of your stuff! Kendall, When I had vocal problems a few year ago (sounds as if yours could be similar, I hope so 'cause mine turned out fine) the surgeon and technician told me people have actually learned to sing with that flexible scope up the nose and down the throat. Makes it possible to watch your vocal folds on TV in real time.

Some of us narcissists are easily entertained.

They also told me that videotapes of celebrity voiceboxes tend to circulate among their colleagues. I never thought to demand royalties for mine. Maybe its not too late for you to offset some expenses ?

Seriously, I got through three laser surgeries with no problems (and pretty modest recovery times). I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it works.

What I would suggest (others may have thoughts on this) are two things:

1) If you aren't dealing with malignancy, check out alternatives to more surgery. I think I owe my recent painless singing to speech therapy and staying hydrated, not to the surgeries;

2) Personally, I would (and did) avoid the old-style "scraping" of the "vocal cords" with a surgical tool at all costs. That technique - which an HMO did try to sell me on not that long ago - has trashed voices.

As with everyone else, my thoughts are with you. Let us know how you are doing. God bless.

Kendall -- I had a friend some years back who was a singer and had nodules removed from her vocal chords. It took a long while (like months, not years) to recover, but eventually she did recover and began to sing again. Her voice was lower than it had been, but she was SINGING. so you might have to learn some new parts, but ...

Kendall, when I saw the title of this thread I bet myself it had been started by Catspaw (I had just read Lloyd61(62)'s thread).

One thing that occurred to me when Peg posted her message saying it was usually women singers who had this problem was that you've just gotta quit singing falsetto. If God had intended you to be a countertenor, he'd have never let you go through the voice change (let alone the growth of your equipment).

Kendal, Liza Minelli, NOT one of my faves at all, until I heard her talking about what she went through with this. She is back treading the boards and singing after having a lot of trouble, even had hips replaced. I think she is not dancing as much, but she is still singing.

Listen to Spaw, for once, that last part about "I'll be fine" and being positive is spot on. Loved your song that Max played tonight....visualise yourself coming through this and singing at the picnic table with your dawg, whether this one sings or not!
