I play classical and would like to play Andy Irvines version of As I Roved Out as an instrumental. He has recorded it on UTUBE but he hasn't produced it in either notation or tab form. Does anyone know if it is available?

I suspect that the singer will be glad when all soldiers return to Eire and are united with their wives. This will then relieve the singer of the burden of having had to marry "the lassie who has the land". I read somwhere an explanation by Andy Irvine, that in Napoleonic times in Eire, it was a custom that single, young and fit men should "marry" the wives of absent soldiers, and thus ensure that the land the soldiers were leaving for the battlefield, was not allowed to fall into disrepair for lack of an able bodied male.

I was listening to that beautiful song and what I have been trying is capo 2, then start in Em go to G then D then A, after that it's more or less the same chords, without the D.

Wow here is a coincidence - I'm sitting at my computer listening to music picked at random from 917 on itunes - it picks As I roved out - very nice thinks I - haven't listened to it for a while. As I scowled down on mudcat I spied a thread on as I roved out. When I opened it - it turns out to be a thread I had started 6 years ago!!!

Sean O'Laoi: Several versions of THOUSANDS ARE SAILING are given in the thread called Lyr Req: Thousands Are Sailing (from Deanta). I think the one sung by Tullamore might be the same version that is sung by Planxty.

If you want to discuss THOUSANDS ARE SAILING, it's best to do it in that thread, not this one.

For Junebug, I should mention that it's not necessary for the woman to have golden hair (I don't think her hair colour is ever specifically mentioned); the image is really just the contrast between two superficially bright and shiny things; one precious, one common.

The Famine is probably just a red herring so far as this song is concerned, since it isn't mentioned in any version found in tradition, so far as I can tell; marrying for land or money was not unusual at any time, or in any country.

Kennedy's Folksongs of Britain and Ireland has a version from Michael Gallagher of Beleek in Fermanagh, "The Deluded Lover", which has that final verse; the notes add:

"This fine song...recorded from members of the Tunney family...was also sung by Mary McGarvey of Donegal, where it was entitled The Briar and the Rose."

The final verse of that version is then quoted:

But if the Queen would call off her men
Through England, Ireland, France and Spain
And take every man from his wedded woman
Sure, the Lord might send me my true-love again.

"Now she hopes that the Queen will not only recall her soldiers but, in so doing, will also call them away from women they have married while abroad."

This may be an over-convoluted explanation, but it presumably could be something on those lines.  It doesn't really make any difference whether the man or the woman is considered to be speaking at that point.

Does anybody have any information regarding the meaning of the last verse of version 2 in the database? The famine/marrying for land theme seems to fit all the other verses except this last one.

In normal tuning, I use D / C / Am chords, or Dm/C/Am depending on what mood i want. I'm trying to learn stuff in DADGAD tuning, but the best I can come up with at the moment is the 1st 2 chord which are repeated. The 1st one is all strings open except the G which is stopped at an A. This makes all the notes either D or A, eliminating the 3rd so its not major or minor. the 2nd chord at the moment I play all open strings.

Someone who actually knows a bit about DADGAD might be able to describe that better!
