Tuesday night at Sean Og's in Skibbereen. It's local musicians, not a tourist session. I visited my daughter there last summer, and got in on a sesuin.

I think the Ellen's pub you are referring to was a bit north of Sligo town - out near Lisadell (as in the tune "The Humours of Lisadell". Last time I was there (a couple of years ago) it had changed hands and the music was gone. There used to be a very good session in the pub Stone the Crows (various members of Dervish were there the last time I was in). Further north, the Ship in Killybegs, Donegal has some great music (it's run by Martin McGinley - the ex-Dervish fiddler).

IN our group that is coming out with me will be a box player...singer/dancer, and a friend of mine who has a good time regardless...

Oh and me, I play the bodhran, whistle, sing...

Plus some friends who all play allsorts, banjo - flute - whistle - box a fairly big bunch we meet up with every year...

Last year I started off in PJ Murphys bar where I met up with some friends and it all went wild from there really.

Yes the Fleadh Cheoil Na Eireann is in Enniscorthy again this year.

I went last year and had a great time. Great sessions, and if you get a chance to tear yourself away from the pubs then there are some good competitions to see, set dancing outdoors and a good load of fun.

I was in a pub one night last year, and I packed away 4 or 5 times, each time the locals would not let me go, play one more... Can't remember what time I got home in the end, but the first time I packed away it was 5am...

There is also a great load of history to the town, with Vinegar Hill a lovely view point over the town, the setting of an uprising in 1800's. And a great place to sit and let the wind clear your head of a hangover.

Accomodation in the town is scarce if you are thinking of going... here is the fleadh cheoil web site if you want more info... www.fleadhcheoil.com

Also get to meet loads of nice people and I am hoping to meet up with a few people I met last year, and from the workshop weeks I have been to lately.

There are some really, really excellent sessions to be found!

Not in the west, but isn't the Feis Ceóil in Enniscorthy or somewhere in Wexford at the end of August this year? Every musician in Ireland will be there.

A lot of people head for Lisdoonvarna after the Fleadh. The Matchmaking Festival is on there for the whole of September, and sessions abound.
There used to be a lovely session in Bell Harbour, not far from Corofin, Co. Clare.

It's been 4 years since I hit a session in Clare, so the venues could shift (as they do), but Tommy and Siobhán Peoples used to have one in Brogan's, O'Connell St, Ennis, and as far as I can recall, Declan Brandon's at the top of the street used to be a great hangout.

If P.J. Curtis sees this, maybe he can fill you in on more up to date stuff.

I'm aware of Doolin and taffes in Galway etc. the well known places. What i'm looking for are local sessions to fall into. I'm spending two weeks at home driving around after the Fleadh Cheoil so I'd like to settle into as couple. Thanks for all the info folks everything helps.

Not far from the Cliffs of Moher there's the town of Doolin, where you'll find McGann's Pub - a real mecca for trad. Irish musicians.

Nagel's pub in Ennistymon, CO. Clare is known for good traditional music. Tommy Peoples used to lead a Sunday night session there, but I don't know if he still does.

I think it was the Mermaid, around the corner from a hotel - opposite a car park.

Or there used to be sessions at a place called Big Ellens - though it was near Sligo - cant remember exactly...

Most sessions have paid players,but thats only to guarantee some music.A lot of the sessions will be starting to wind down then.Theres still a few all year sessions. Kerry. Tralee:Bettys,Strand street,Fri/sun Baileys Corner,Ashe street,Tues. Sean Ogs,regular,not sure of the days. Listowel:Harp and Lion,Sats.(finishes mid Sept) Dingle:Droichead Beag,every day,all year. Theres probably more,if I get any more info I'll post.

Hobans' of the Octagon. Informal session every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Musicians and singers welcome.

Matt Molloys - In my opinion the musicians tend to take themselves a bit to seriously.

Lots of sessions in Galway City but I dont get there too often. If you get there it should be relatively easy to track something down. UNfortunately the informal session is getting harder to find. In the age of the Celtic Tiger less and less musicians seem to be interested in playing for fun.

Can anyone help me find a good session anywhere on the west coast at the end of August, beginning of Sept. I'm trying to find somewhere informal where I can sit in. I'm now living in exile so any help would be appreciated
