THE YOUNG HIGHLAND ROVER
(Robert Burns)

Loud blow the frosty breezes,
The snows the mountain cover,
Like winter on me siezes.
Since My young Highland Rover
Far wanders nations over;
Where e'r he goes, where e'r he strays
May heaven be his warden
Return him safe to fair Strathspey
And Bonny Castle Gordon
--
--
The trees now naked growning
Shall soon with leaves be Hinging
The birdies dowie moaning
Shall all be blithely singing
And ev'ry flower be springing
So I'll rejoice the lee-lang day
When by his mighty warden
My youth's returned to fair Strathspey
And bonny Castle Gordon

^^ ****************Robert Burns****************

Almost the same as in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #143 (1788) where the tune is "Morag" (English, 'Marion'). In SMM that last four lines of the 2 verses are denoted 'chorus', and have a 2nd stain of the tune for them. For an earlier copy of the tune see the Scots tune index on my website.

Hi, and thanks again Bruce....says here that Serge Hovey, who researched and arranged this recording, preferred the first two stanza submission. Burns later became dissatisfied with it and submitted another. MORAG is the tune!

The few statements I've seen by Serge Hovey on tunes for Burns' songs didn't impress me very much. I still like James Dick's 'The Songs of Robert Burns', of which I have the reprint edition. I also have Prof. Kinsley's 3 vol. edition of Burns' Songs and Poems, but for songs and their tunes I haven't noted where it added anything of importance to Dick's work.

Where would I be able to gain access to J.D.'s works?

I just looked for a used copy at www.bookfinder.com, but none were listed. Keep looking every once in a while. None of the reprint edition of 'Scots Musical Museum' either. Try your local library, or better, a university library if there's one in your vicinity.

If you want to see the original of the song posted here, it's available in vol. II of 'The Scots Musical Museum' via www.bookfinder.com at only $1277.+

Great Work! They have several copies I hope? It's the sort of book you'd want to lend out and still be able to referrence, while having another squirelled away for safe keeping. ...I Wish.....

One copy, and it's all yours as far as I'm concerned. I'm not racing to buy it.

I'm not racing to do much of anything,... least of all for the aquisition of an incredibly expensive book! I think Hovey is fine for now, and besides, if the origional tune is there, then I'm content enough. I don't mind creating 'arrangements' around traditional tunes, I love to do it and have to hold myself back.

Did you know that Hovey was unable to move his fingers to write the score? He communicated with his son via "computer, a home made letter board, teeth clicks, eye blinks, and mysterious ways known only to father and son". I find the process remarkable!
