Subject: THE GREENMAN MUDCAT TAVERN
From: katlaughing
Date: 10 Aug 00 - 08:07 PM

Sure is a nice cool day here in the park, amongst the sylvan glades and flower beds. We've got a tented tavern set up with a portable stage and a portable swiiming pool; nice cool breeze is blowing through and if you look really closely, you might see the PeterDenizenT Greenman as he waltzes about smiling at each little flower and categorising each type of topsoil, and tracks the path of each different little critter. Don't mind if he trails a bit of leaves or other debris, or that he lollygags...it's that kind of day for us all...just take it slow and easy, sit back in the grass, relax, take a long, cool sip, and hum a little tune....ah.....summertime and the living is easy....

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Greenman Mudcat Tavern...

I'll be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over here trying to learn a new tune called "Angel Child". Gotta keep the others away from my youthful drivelings AND my guitar away from flying rotten vegetables. Living is EASY? I'm hyped up on music, I get to meet Mrrzy tomorrow, and school starts up again next week. All I can say is Summertime, glad it's almost over! Sweating like a pig just ain't my thing...

Oh right, where was I?

Tonight, this is your life...angel child of mine...

Awright, awright, Spaw! Ooooooooommmmmmm....takes a deep breath in and leetttttsssss it oout sllllooooowwwwwlllyyy here ya go, darlin' since you're going to hell in a handbasket of a van, anyway, I guess you deserve something a little stronger, listen up, now...go back behind the porta-swimming pool, down that dirt path, up the little hill, until you come to a fork, take the left trail heading down towards the bog, there's a miasma of smoky, oily crap in the air, stinks, too, keep on that path until you see a red pair of knickers tied 8 feet up in a sycamore tree on your south side, go under that very tree, and part the lilac bushes on yer right and you will see a narrow, slatted swinging bridge which goes over the bog

Now, if you've made it that far, DON't go over the bridge!! That's where the Flushing Gators really are, BUT, you do hafta get kinda close anyway. Start singing, I don't care what, just something soothing, then, very, very slowly...step towards the Banks of the Bog, look under the nearrside of the bridge and you will find a key. Take the key very slowly, then back away very slowly, never turning your back on the gators.

Once you are back on the upper bank, follow your trail back and bring the key to me and we can unlock the booze wagon!!!

DougeR, sure glad to have you on board, maybe you can ride shotgun for Spaw? And, watch out for the rest of the phoaks, okay? There should be a pretty big group coming in here real soon...all manner of folkers, draped in greens of various fashions and eras..'tis a grand day for a renassiance fair, eh?

Oh, Mbo, have you found yer angel, yet, darlin'? Oh and who is Derry, Derry Darlin's us all? Did you see that?!!

No kat, it'll be a long time still. But that doesn't stop me from writing songs for her! Got a new one but can't do it here...too risky.

Back to Oasis...
I want to talk tonight

Spaw comes limping into the bar looking beaten and completely bedraggled, clothes torn........

......Holy Keyriced on a crutch.......Somebody give me a hand here..........I'll take anything ya' got to drink....WATER.....ANYTHING!!!!!.......Damn kat, what the hell are you tryin' to do here anyway.......I thought I was supposed to be smellin' the roses.........Yeah, you're right....I don't smell like no rose!!!........Spiders and snakes my ass....they were the least of it! I was going through that first woods and a bunch of rabid possums came after me! Had to beat it up that damn hill and I thought I was having another heart attack!!! Then I slog through the bog and there's a big fockin' Irish guy with a potato stuffed thong tryin' to dance a jig in a tub of lime jello and I had to detour into a REAL swamp.....damn near killed me gettin' outta' that.......and just when I reach the top of a hill and am ready to head for the key stash, some fuckwit in half a gorilla suit and fishnet tights was lighting farts and singed me pretty bad on the way past..............THEN, just when I grab the key, your dipshit garden faeries came out screaming like banshees and swinging tiples everywhere. What the hell is the matter with you anyway, keeping those little pissants around? Those little creeps kept coming til they encountered Peter dressed in green and looking like the Boston Strangler which seemed to confuse them for a minute and I was able to hobble away. You got any idea what its like having a bunch of garden faeries clamped on your legs like a pack of horny beagles??? ...................Geeziz..........Anyway, here's the key....Now get me some Jack!!!!!!!!.........anybody got anything for these cuts?

Spaw

Yeah Doug, you should have come along..........Did I mention the Jewish princess with the banjo in white socks? I was really excited, but when I started towards her I fell into a cesspool and was only able to get out with the help of a guy who had a Radio Shack R/C car with a winch. The damn winch broke of course....typical Radio Shack....But at that point I grabbed hold of a leg attached to a fiddler with dragonflies hovering around her hooters and clams in her toes.

I'm tellin' you....The whole thing was a nightmare........................

to the tune of "Just a Song at Twilight:"

When the swamp is quiet, When the moss hangs low
tum-tee-tum - tee-tum-tum, When the water moves slow
That's the time to sing softly, Lay your head down awfully,>br> Stick your head in the mud.

-- favorite lullaby of those long-tailed, sharp-toothed, yellow-eyed alligators from Thatcher Hurd's book, *Mama Don't Allow.*

Any virtual gin and limeade around this joint? Tanqueray, preferably.

I am feeling very mellow after doing a bunch of old-timey stuff last weekend. It is my mission in life to see that children do not forget how to play "In and out the window," "A-tisket a-tasket," etc.

Kat, how did you know about the Green Man and me??

Did I get the line break thing right?

Hey, Ameregin, said Giac, pulling up in an old rattletrap with a false gas tank, I just got here, over the "real" Thunder Road, with some of the best untaxed liquor you ever tasted. None of that oily, kerosene stuff, no sir, this is real. Try some.

Things must have been pretty rough here last night. I just saw a guy with faeries stuck all over his legs. He was covered with sludge and was lying next to a wench, er, winch. By golly, I think it was Spaw.

Pete's been at the mushrooms again, I think! Well, I'm off to an open air jazz & fireworks concert tomorrow night (The latter after the former, not at the same time!) so I've got to pack the coolbox, check the citronella candles and select a bottle to go with the picnic but there's time to drop in here and have a glass or two first.

Ooh, nice place. Very nice indeed. I like tin ceilings, but you can't beat these high, windy canopies of sun-dappled leaves...

Hey, Satyr, buy me a drink???

Hmm, how 'bout a lemonade made with molasses? What's that, it's past noon? Why didn't ya say so? Okay, make it a...well, it's a drink I had recently, it doesn't have a name, let's give it one: a Tree Fairy!

Absolut and tonic with lime and raspberry liqueur...OR you can make it with Absolut, tonic, sweetened lime juice and frozen or fresh raspberries, if ya got 'em...

Okay, I am gonna go and nurse this nice cold drinkie under this chestnut tree over here...and keep working on the lyrics to this song I've been crafting off and on for two summers...

Man in Green

Saw him in the forest,
His eyes speak trees and vine
Saw him bless the harvest,
His lips taste songs sweet acorn wine

Green, green his cloak
green, green his hood
green, green the garments of the man in the wood

Saw him dancing shadows
Misty meadow grey, dew-dropping rain
Watched him waltz with the barley mows
Gold and silver shining warm autumn grain

Green his hazel wand
Green his oaken shield
Green his ivy-covered mantle, the lord of the field

Green the twilight glows
Green the water gleams
Green, green his secrets, the master of dreams

Green, green the stars
Green, green the fire
Green the whispering glade around us
Green the shade of desire

Green, green my eyes
Green, green my heart
Green my love's dusky shadow
The man in the dark.

THE GREEN MAN
Copyright 1999 Thomas Herring

Amidst the trees, Quivering mulberry leaves;
Where king david found voices from his god.
When spirits tease, they will begin to please;
Shall we listen to their answering song?

CHORUS:
Through the ages, and millenium,
Turning pages on each kingdom come,
As he gazes on the race we run;
In laws of nature, TRUTH!, we return...
To the Green Man...

His steady gaze, Watcher from woodland ways;
East of the moon, West of the stars.
His memories, Bring us forgotten days;
Alexander kissed the tree of the sun on it's bark.

CHORUS

Mysteries, he beckons, "Escape with me,
To madness divine; For human is blind".
Spirits speak, From every flower and leaf
And the Hunter may find the thrill in his mind!

Chorus

Tree of desire, Oh, Tree of the moon,
The tree prophesises, Speaks out and warns.
Gardens require, Oh, but the wild is begun,
The Green Man inside us; Forever reborn!

CHORUS, and repeat first verse!

Blessings upon you!

Aw,Bert! Just as everything was all quieting down (disregarding Spaw and LonesomeEJ), you had to go and bring up politics! Shucks shoot!

Kat, why not ban the discussion of divisive topics, in this, your very own "Mudcat Tavern?"

Anyway, Bert, I'm confident once the folkies got to know me, and find out that I don't have horns on my head, and know which fork to use, at special occasions, they'll probably welcome me in spite of my percieved shortcomings.

Hey ya'll, this is a FUN and GREEN and SUMMERTIME picnickey kind of Tavern, so have at it, make of it what you will; it is all YOURS.

Ole Spaw will come back no doubt refreshed or frazzled...those dang cigars have got to be downwind, please..and no political buttons of any sort, no proselytising...except for the Green Man, of course, and he wins hands down, especially with all of those wonderful songs already sung in this Tavern!

Open bar, serve yourself, when we run out...someone can make a run to the swamp or move the still! Lemonade, freshly squeezed sounds lovely and I've never tasted it with molasses before....Hmmmm...oh that IS good and so nice and kewl! Thanks!

Tarry a bit
Sing a bit
Watch for the Green Man'O

Dance a while
Rest a while
Watch for the Green Man'O!

Clouds are spent
Bats have gone
Found is the Green Man'O

kat and the faeries start dancing round the ring, with her cats merrily chasing their ribbons....

I can sing 'em, but I sure can't spell 'em at this hour.) Tomorrow we do another 9 hours. I'll try to cruise back through after rehearsal for something stronger, but NOT Spaw's stuff. Well, that Gin & Limeade sounded so good I went and fixed one; figured I deserve it, being on vacation and all. About half an hour into sippin' it VERY slowly I started feeling crappy, so I went and took my blood sugar, which was climbing toward 200. Had to dump it and take a bike ride. Damn. I'm back for the virtual, and the company.

Can I interest anyone in a circle game, since we are out here on the greensward??

Don't know what a circle game is either, but I'm lolling in my hammock with my chilled freshly made punch that they're serving at the bar right now. It's made from freshly squeezed oranges and lemons, with lashings of gin, which the committed bar staff have been spending hours preparing (that's why they've been so quiet and couldn't help Spaw on his mission).

I've just bought a bamboo flute and in this world where dreams come true, I've mastered (mistressed?) with eaze its elusive notes and fingering, and am playing the most romantic slow air of all with its woody deep tones.

The faeries are dancing. In the distance, a group of elves, Tolkeinesque, are singing. The sound of their sweet voices marred only by the sound of Spaw's gentle snoring (he's fallen asleep from exhaustion)....

Will you come by the hills to a land where fancy is free?
To stand where the peaks meet the sky and the rocks meet the sea
Where the river runs clear and bracken lies gold in the sun
And the cares of tomorrow must wait 'til this day is done.

Will you come by the hills to a land where life is a song?
To stand where the birds fill the air with their joys all day long
Where the trees sing in tune and even the wind blows in time
And the cares of tomorrow must wait 'til this day is done.

Will you come by the hills to a land where legend remains?
Where stories of old touch the heart, where we're led to the days
Where the past it is lost and the future is yet to be won
And the cares of tomorrow must wait 'til this day is done.

Will you come by the hills to a land where fancy is free?
To stand where the peaks meet the sky and the rocks meet the sea
Where the river runs clear and bracken lies gold in the sun
And the cares of tomorrow must wait 'til this day is done.

I could stay here forever. Sigh.

Circle game: example.

All join hands, any number or gender. One sucker, er, volunteer, in the middle.

You need only know your left from your right, and be able to count to eight.

Face left, left foot poised and ready to step out.

To practice, have everyone take eight steps, to the beat. Take eight more.

Now, to the music:

We're marching 'round the village
(3x)
As we have done before.

Everyone stop. Raise arms into arches. "It" goes out one arch, then in the next:

Go in and out the window, (3x)
As we have done before.

Go forth and find your lover,

I kneel because I love you,

(Getting preadolescents to do this is really a chore.)

Everyone joing hand and resume circling left to:

Farewell, I hate to leave you,

Circle turns and circles RIGHT to:

I'm coming back to see you,

These games are lots of fun, and the secret agenda is, you are creating the next generation of FOLK DANCERS, as the moves are the same.

Well guys I'm FINALLY back! We loaded up the car and headed to Greenville at 10:30am this morning. Everything was go, until 12:30pm, when we were about 15 miles outside Greenville. Various scary noises and difficulties steering forced me to pull off the road, expecting a flat tire. Turned out something got caught on the drive belt and chewed it up. We called up our Dad on the phone to come help us (he's a mechanic) but he was back in Jacksonville, 70 miles south. After 2 hours of waiting in the hot car with nothing to do on the side of the road with nothing around but fields of crops, our Dad found us. After 45 minutes of wrestling with the evil new drive belt, everything was back in working order, and he escorted us the rest of the way into Greenville. An adventurous day, to say the least! Glad I'm back, sitting in my swivel chair infront of my computer with BLOODY GREAT net connection again! Whhheee! BTW school starts tomorrow, arrrg!

Here I go all drunkered up singing (or attempting to) this song to the tune of Hobo's Lullaby....

Farewell…

Farewell, my weary steel mill
Let your foundries slowly die;
The gates are closing behind me
As I wipe tears in my eyes.

PGE jacked their rates up;
EPA decreased the water flow.
There're forest fires in Idaho
All the reasons they need to know.

Workers at Kaiser are still striking
For jobs that are barely even there;
The corporations are now laughing
At the worried faces everywhere.

Now the smoke is no longer rising
The emptiness is bearing down;
The mill is in a blanket of darkness
As the car slowly leaves the town….

As this is the Green Man's Tavern,
I could sing of his lady fair...
'Tis a song of spring, not harvest, though,
And night is drawing near.

Shall I sing as I wander here?
As a lady dressed in red,
with dancing bells and mischievous spells,
and hair all crowning my head?

Or did I crash this party?
I'm new here, as you may know.
Do I sing among you,
Or turn and sadly go?

Thank you to Peg, Thomas the Rhymer, and Kat for your Green Man Songs. I'm going to have to look those up now. Beautiful.

Hey, somebody said something about bamboo flute?
Wanna play? I know a really good song called Lady of the Wood, needs a flute with it. Even virtually. Maybe a little later... After some o'the punch. Ahhh!

Ahhh, the dedicated bar staff came through on the Margheritas. Nice glasses too, I particularly like the cacti on the stems. I've brought along some spring rolls and a bit of Key Lime pie to add into the mix here. (a little tequila in the whipped cream is a nice touch.)

I'll throw in a harmony on whatever comes along. I survived the weekend of classical music, (It totally burried my Birthday. Waaaa! although I did get THE most amazing chorus of the usual that I've ever heard. Probably ten part harmony, and Nice voices.) I was certainly gl;ad toget back to fiddle playing and beer with the boys on Tuesday night, and a bit of singing and margheritas wouldn't go amis.

Say, Where'd Spaw end up? How'd the dreaded camping trip go? Was it almost as bad as lookin' for that key?

As I gaze near your graces, and faces, remember
OUR evening sojourn, sweet dreams in december

This stillness is rich, like the head on my Guiness
It floatingly spills, through thin air, these long minutes
Rewarding, retelling, Rhymsical infinits
Our listening fortune, these songs that are in us

Beautiful, Beautiful, so calmly we are

I think that was my cue to wander back in...

As it is now dark where I live, I have brought meditation pebbles with me.
These are virtual pebbles of virtual glass that glow with a soft, serene light, in a multitude of colours.
The best thing about them is that they just disappear when they burn out, nothing to clean up after.

Thomas the Rhymer, again, niiice. Where do you find these songs? Or are they yours?

So, I will sing!

This is the best song I ever wrote, (so far,)
it's got harpsichord, piano, flute, drone, and pulse.
Just imagine an incredibly rich textured mix of timbres and colours
the parts all weave in and out of each other
and the music weaves in and out of major key
very structured, though, and the flute takes the melody during the descant.

Lady of the Wood
© "hesperis" May 2000

verse 1:
Lady of blossoming
Awaken us to thy bliss
Oh, Green Lady, Springbringer
Lovers joy in thy kiss

Passion of leaf and fern
Of flowering moss on stone
Wood-green light dances here
For love's delight alone

verse 2:
Lady of the wood
How shall we celebrate this day?
By dancing, and laughter, and
Loving, on the first of May

Passion of flesh and bone
Of heartbeat close to heart-beat
The Year-Wheel is turning now
Merry part and merry meet

Descant:
Lord of the Green
Lady of Light
Springtide is quickening
We meet in thy sight

Lord of the Green
Lady of Love
The earth beneath us
Branches above

Repeat descant.

I really need to record it, but I'm looking for someone to lend me a flute,
'cause I want to do it in a mix of midi and real. I could play Horn for the flute part, but... OK, so I'm picky.

Kat(purring?), thank you for the lovely welcome.
The salutation is just hesperis read the other way. One of my circle dancing friends signs his emails 'salohcin', so I tried mine out, and was pleased with it. He just wrote his first song, so I'm going to tell him about Mudcat!

Hail!

Catrin, thank you for the flute, although you probably do play it much better than I would.
I'm not a flute player... I just play any musical instrument I can get my hands on. I'm a wee bit obsessed with music, you see.
I currently have ten instruments in the house (including the homemade cobbled-together-out-of-junk ones) and only five actually belong to me... (Mostly the homemade junk ones, but my friend just gave me a small cactus Rainstick!!!!! I Happy!!!!!!!!!)

Glad you folky folks liked my song. I wrote three beautiful songs this year, one each in May, June and July. Now that it's the middle of August I should probably write another one... Maybe I'll use the Rainstick for it.
Amazing what happens when you actually dedicate yourself to your Art, eh?

BTW I hear Rick, the folk singer,(perhaps I should say "allegedly" to avoid lawsuits) is going to Orillia to sing "may the Crop Circle be Unbroken" but it's only a rumour, I'm sceptical myself...
RtS (Off to Greece again in 10 days time, to get some sand in my toes. Yippee - even if it is a 6am flight and because of strange ferry timings we don't get to accomodation till midnight!)

Well Morticia!

Here's a drink to your first born!!
Three cheers and hooray
How much you both dreaded
And yearned for this day

For no news is good news
But good news is best
Time to relax now
The weight's off your chest

So skip-to-me-diddle
And fol-diddle-day
For ever you'll remember
This wonder-ful day!

CHEERS! (clink)

I like this place.
The birds are singing prettily now that everyone else is gone. The bar staff is chittering away to itself, and trailing streams of magic into little glasses... Whiskey, I think it is...
I'll have a spiked honey lemonade, thanks.
Refresh-ing!

A large green giant, following Liz the Squeak who is walking backwards and giving hand signals to the porter, enters and stops by the door. The Porter comes out from under the Giant sweaty and very thirsty, with a large carrier in one hand ( swearing colourfully sotto voce)and calls to the bar staff fo a lrge jug 1/2 full of Ice, from the bag he pulls a bottle of Champagne and a container with a pint(UK) of chilled peach juice in it, he carefully( by eye) measures 4 Oz of apricot Brandy into the jug and adds the peach juice followed by the champagne and give it a stir. The cry goes up, " "The golden Shower is ready" ( for that is what the drink is called) and the porter collpses into a seat with a glass of it in his hands, muttering, " what fool suggested I dance a green man Giant in the woods in summer"

Well someone, what are you waiting for? Get the guy with the Golden Showers to pour you some. I'll stick to the Margheritas myself, but it is your call.

I'l just pull my fiddle out and play a nice liesurely hornpipe or two. The Faerie Queen might do nicely.

I've been cooking most of the weekend, but just came from a great music party with the boys, where I played until the tips of my fingers started taking paint off the finger board. I love those. I also have tomorrow off, so I'll have another margherita andsee about a song or two. My voice isn't tired. The boys don't sing, they just play.

It was pleasant and delightful of a bright summer's morn Whith the fields and the meadows all covered in corn And the blackbirds and thrushes sang on every tree And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day . . .

Not for crotchety old men like yourself....*BG*.....

Here I go singing to the tune of Lord of The Dance....Dance in The Mudcat Tavern

The night has come and the moon is high
The stars are dancing across the sky
From the mists the faeries sing and prance
They come and ask us to join the dance

Chorus: Dance, dance, wherever you may be
For its the Mudcat Tavern you see
The music's great and the drinks are free
We're all keeping time with the wild Banshee

Kat's in the kitchen cooking a meal
Mbo's on the porch playing a reel
Jen's in the yard dancing with her man
Giac's drinking shine and he can barely stand

Chorus:

Spaw's in the bedroom talking to the possums
They talk back and he finds it really awesome
Aine's getting up and saying "night to y'all
The hour is late and I forgot my geritol"

Chorus:

Mick's in the parlor to organise the sidhe
Saying, "You must all stop working for free"
They all realise they have been maligned
So the faeries join Kaiser on the picket line

Chorus:

Bert's in the back singing about his size
It's how you use it I hope you realise
Thomas is speaking in his rhymes
He's been in Faery a thousand times

Chorus:

Rick's on the roof a-singing his tunes
Moonchild's down there dancing for the Moon
The Moon gazes down and dances with her
She reaches up and climbs to the stars

And I'm in the corner writing a song
The Faery Queen marches through the throng
She picks me up and draws me to the dance
And through the mists we kiss and prance

Chorus:

The others come on in through the mists
The FBI is here making a list
There is no need to stop with the coming dawn
For the Mudcat dance goes on and on

Chorus:

Amerginwhoapologisestoanyonewhofeelsleftoutofthisbutifyougetmadathimforityoucanpissoff....

After a few tall rum and tonics, Susan launches into the following, in a rich, rum-enhanced voice, to the tune of a Mozart horn concerto (courtesy of Flanders and Swann)

I once had a whim and I had to obey it to buy a french horn in a secondhand shop I polished it up and I started to play it, in spite of the neighbors who begged me to stop To sound that horn, I had to develop my embouchure I found that horn was a bit of a devil to play So artfully wound to give you a sound, a beautiful sound so rich and round Ah the hours I had to spend before I mastered it in the end But that was yesterday, and just today, I looked in the usual place. There was the case, but the horn itself was missing Ah where can it have gone, Haven't you, hasn't anyone seen my horn Ah where can it have gone, What a blow, now I know, I'm unable to play my allegro Who swiped that horn I'll bet you a quid, somebody did Knowing I'd found a concerto and wanted to play it Afraid of my talent at playing the horn For only today to my utter dismay It had vanished away like the dew in the mornn I've lost my horn I know I was using it yesterday I've lost my horn Lost my horn Found my horn Gone There's not much hope of getting it back, though I'd willingly pay a reward I know some hearty folk who's party joke's pretending to hunt with a horn Gone away, gone away, was it one of them took it away. (she stopps for another rum and tonic.)

Well, my French Horn stays with me...

So! Music!
Mbo - find me the music or the score, and I'll play whatever-it-was for you.
But for tonight,

The playlist:
Shenandoah
The Water is Wide
Meet me in St Louis
Georgy Girl
King of the Road
Scarborough Fair
Hooked on a Feeling
Homeward Bound
My Heart Will Go On
Red River Valley
The 59th Street Bridge Song
Danny Boy

Standing underneath a linden tree,
with my case left open in front of me,
If you like my play, then rest here for a song,
drop in a quarter, I'll thank you before long

I KNOW I was using it yesterday. Maybe Cletus and the boys. . . but that is truly a terrible thought.

Yep, brought some great leftovers today. spring rolls (lots of 'em, not fried, so don't worry, be hapy.) and an amazing mango, snow pea dish (your choice of tofu or chicken) with a zing of hot chili, and lime and some cashews to top it off.

DougR, i'd like to make my appointment for a massage on Sunday evening. I'm entering the weekend of the big Dim Sum, and expect it to be quite a work-out.

Well, I'll have one of those Pusser's rum and tonics and toddle off to one of the hammocks to listen to some sweet song or other, and drift off. . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

With Alison in Ireland, and Mick so busy with the political campaign, it probably won't cause an upset anyway, anyhow.
