Iris gave a masterclass in accompaniment at the National & Bob Bolton attended. He is now her No. 1 fan. He was taking lotsa' pics on Sat - I only had 6 left & no spare film & he didn't have one either! bugger, bugger, bugger, so I really had to ration myself. I'll have to speak to Katiewebmaster about getting a pic on the website.

Agree, Sandra. I am always most impressed by the minimalist approach to accompaniment, though not everyone can do it. Martyn and Iris can, because they are so good at making every note count.

Dave A - have you posted the story of Martyn & the little girl? It sounds familiar.

The whole night was magic, especially the finale, Reedy River, but I think my best memory will be talking to Martyn in the kitchen about accompaniment.

Watching the Martyn Wyndham-Read Band perform at the National showed me what accompanying is about - accordians & concertinas & fiddles can be LOUD but every note that Iris & John played (both at the National with ampification & acoustically at the Dog) enhanced Martyn's singing. I'm not a muso so don't usually notice what musicians are doing, but after seeing Iris & John at the National I watched other performers with different eyes.

Sandra,
I'm not surprised your gig went way over time....

Martyn has two qualities that are not often found in the same person:
(i) he's a hell of a good bloke who will go out of his way to make a little girls night special (I have just visited the lady in question in England & 18 years after the event she still remembers Martyn asking her to sing "The Skye Boat Song" with him.
(ii) despite his birth, he may well be the best performer of Australian traditional lyrics that we still have.

I have been O\S for a few weeks on a trip that has been very special but I'm really sorry I missed Martyn.

Mind you, he was a bit of a worry 40 years ago - he would take two gigs a night (one at a jazz club & one at Reata) & if he recognised you at the jazz club you were lumbered with driving him to the real gig of the night. However, I have to say that if I could go back to sitting at the high table at Reata & hearing Martyn sing Shenandoah & Farmers Boy I'd be a very happy camper.

God bless him - he is a one off & I'm fortunate for having known him

Dave A

what a night (& George I forgot to pass on your greeting, but JennyO printed up the thread & gave it to Martyn)

We went well over time - finishing almost midnight which is the latest we are supposed to vacate the premises. Martyn was booked for 2 brackets - 30 min & 60 min & they just kept going! Martyn sang & recited & told tales & Iris & John accompanied his songs & also did several instrumentals.

The Dog is the best acoustic venue in Sydney (an old late 19th Century Town Hall made of wood & sandstone, with 20' ceiling), & they loved performing here.

A magic night which freda will review in her inimitable style.

The course of a week costs £185 inclusive of Danni's superb buffet lunch. The extra costs are your ferry and a gite or b+b from a list Martyn sends. It's a wonderful experience. I know because I've been a tutor for the last two years and am doing a third course this year.

                         LA    JEUSSELINIERE

AS THE SUN RISES HIGH
AND THE CIRCLING BIRD'S CRY
IS THE ONLY SOUND I EVER HEAR
AS THE BARN SHADOW FALLS
ON THE OLD COTTAGE WALLS
I KNOW WHY THIS PLACE CALLS ME EACH YEAR

CHORUS;

FOR I LEAVE WELL BEHIND
ALL THOSE THINGS THAT I FIND
CAUSE ME PAIN AND DISTRESS AND DESPAIR
THEY DON'T TRAVEL WITH ME
WHEN I SAIL 'CROSS THE SEA
AND DRIVE DOWN TO LE JEUSSELINIERE

FOR IT'S THERE I FIND PEACE
WHERE THE WORLD'S SORROWS CEASE
AND MY HEART IS RELEASED FROM ITS TOIL
WHERE THE TREE OFFERS FRUITS
THE VINE SENDS ITS SHOOTS
AND THE WILD CHERRY ROOTS IN THE SOIL

    MY FRIENDS BRING THEIR SONG
    AND THEIR LAUGHTER ALONG
BOTH BELONG ON THE SWEET SUMMER AIR
    WINE WARMS THE NIGHT
    'TILL THE STARS IN DELIGHT
SHINE THEIR LIGHT ON LE JEUSSELINIERE

AND WHEN WINTER BRINGS COLD
SO MY BODY FEELS OLD
AND THE ICE AND SNOW HOLD US IN THRALL
I WILL STILL CLOSE MY EYES
TILL MY FREED SPIRIT FLIES
WHERE THE CIRCLING BIRD CRIES FOR US ALL

AND I'LL LEAVE WELL BEHIND
ALL THOSE THINGS THAT I FIND
CAUSE ME PAIN AND DISTRESS AND DESPAIR
THEY WON'T TRAVEL WITH ME WHEN I SAIL 'CROSS THE SEA
AND DRIVE DOWN TO LE JEUSSELINIERE

THEY WON'T TRAVEL WITH ME
WHEN I SAIL 'CROSS THE SEA

Glad this thread came (back) up. I've been trying to find out more about the "La Jeusseliniere" workshops that Martyn & Danni run, but his website seems to be down; every time I try to get to it I get the message "www.martynwyndhamread.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." (I've been trying for several days now.)

I'm trying to find out what the costs are. If anyone knows, pehaps you could post here or PM me.

Thanks,

But I did print of the message from John of Elsie's Band back in Feb so I will be handing that to Iris & memorising the other messages.

As Martyn is a Mudcatter, I'll just send this thread to him, as an email as I didn't think he gets to Mudcat often!

JennyO/Sandra,

Hmmm ... Look at calendar ... don't trust memory ... repeat ... &c!

Other point: I published Trouble Brewing in the Singabout section of Mulga Wire #14 (I make that about August 1981 ... but I have not checked my perpetual calendar!). It was submitted by John Meredith, along with a tale of very powerful home brews. I'll OCR scan it in and e-mail it to Sandra.

Bob

Sandra, was that a "slipper" the tongue, or in this case, the keyboard?

This is a bit of thread drift for Brett. When I looked back over this thread I noticed you were asking about "Trouble Brewing" by Claude Morris. This is a poem that our friend Rhymin' Simon is fond of reciting, and I am trying to recall whether he did that one at the Dog while you and Charlie were here. I hope he did, 'cos he does it wonderfully. If not, you really missed something.

So back to MWR, I'm looking forward to seeing him at the National in April, and at the Dog a couple of weeks later.

If you paid for that calendar, Bob, you got dudded - Martyn's appearance at the Dog is not 2 weeks after Cobargo! It's almost 2 months later!!

And the National is a week before the Dog, which makes the masterclasses 2 weeks before the Dog.

And why is it half the Dog regulars are heading for Cobargo & missing the annual night of unaccompanied singing?

G'day,

Off to Cobargo - way down south from Sydney - for the Cobargo Folk Festival this weekend: Martyn W-R will be there, with Iris Bishop for additional accompaniment on concertina/accordions.

... Then at Sandra's Loaded Dog Folk Club, as noted above, back in Sydney, some two weeks later ...

... another three weeks and I'll be trying to pick up some of Iris's accompaniment technique at a Master Class before the (Australian) National Folk Festival ... and more of Martyn at the Festival proper the next week (and hundreds of other great acts!).

Regards,

Bob Bolton

I'm a great fan of Martyn's. Margaret and I were playing at a Chicago Scottish fair years ago. Kate picked him up at the airport for an Aural Tradition gig (as mentioned by Art, above) and dragged Martyn out to see us. We were in a basement gym full of rolled up tumbling mats. Martyn was a great audience (there were about six other folks paying attention and a lot of people milling around the trade booths). At the end of the performance he came up and said, "Yeah, I've done this gig before, probably will again." As have all.

My all time favourite singer!! Lovely man with a superb voice and choice of song. Back in 1970 something he did an afternoon seesion at Cleethorpes Festival on the Pier. Joint session with Muckram Wakes (line-up with John Tams) and his version of All for me Grog with Helen Watson on harmonium is still one of the gtreatest things I've heard!

All the best

Martyn remains one of my all-time favorite performers, and long-time friends. (Yes, his last name is hyphenated. Yes, his first name is spelled with a "Y" and not an "i". And ReAd is how he spells the part of the last name after the hyphen.) Those housekeeping details out of the way, go out and buy his CDs, however the heck they spell the name on the cover. He sings wonderful songs, straight and true and strong.

Art, I know the song you're referring to. I think it's called "Bold Reynold." It never fails to bring a tear to my eye -- what a terrific song. I'll have to look up who wrote it and what CD it's on. I'll post that info. here unless someone beats me to it.

And for you Mudcatters in the WAshington, DC, area, I have booked Martyn as our January 2001 Folklore Society of Greater Washington program, on SAturday, January 20th. The concert will be at the WES auditorium, and is free to FSGW members. Kathy

Martin was at 'The Beacon Folk Club', Tunbridge Wells, Kent last Monday (4th Sep) and was BRILLIANT as always. I counted about 35 in the audience. He performs in the Kent/Sussex area quite often when he's not touring Australia or beyond. The Beacon's next guest is Dave Houlden on Oct 3rd.

Martyn gave a concert in our tiny grange/theater in Thetford Vt a few years ago and unfortunately (due, I think, to the fact that no one --me included --knew who he was) there were VERY few people in the audience. He gave a great concert and then it turned into a song and story circle. Good memories!

I used to tell that story a ton---did it for about 30 years. I got it from a retired barber, George ....., in Depoe Bay, Oregon (1967).

Martin is a great talent and collector. We brought him into Chicago to give concerts for the presenting group called Aural Tradition many times. His song about the life of fox on the moors of England is truly an epic that's got to be heard done by him to be fully appreciated. It is a wonder. (Can't recall the name of it.)

Of the five vinyl albums that I have, 4 have a hyphen and one ('Andy's Gone') doesn't. Of the 2 Fellside CDs I have, one has a hyphen and one doesn't. On the back of the envelope in which he sends me a Xmas card each year, he has a hyphen - Wyndham-Read. Dropping the hyphen appears to be carelessness.

G'day Leeneia,

He's been Martyn Wyndham-Read since I first heard him, about 36 years ago ... and a while before that, I guess. All his records in my collection use that spelling.

I know Trouble Brewing! only as a poem, but Martyn does put tunes quite nicely to poems when he wishes.

I have heard Martin in concert, and I'm sure that piece was a poem, not a song. I can almost hear him saying, "Now you hold the gun on me" right this very moment.

I believe his name is spelled Martin Wyndham Read. (No hyphen) Anybody know for sure?

I agree that anyone who gets a chance to attend one of his concerts should go.

I'm not sure if I should post this as a separate "Lyr Add" thread, since it doesn't have a tune, but it is a lovely poem.

Subject: Lyr Add: TROUBLE BREWING (C. Morris)
From: Bob Bolton
Date: 04 Sep 00 - 11:30 PM

G'day Naemanson,

That poem is Trouble Brewing by C Morris. Here is the text from Mulga Wire # 14, August 1979 where I published it after getting a copy found in an old book by Australian folklore collector John Meredith.

"Trouble Brewing" is a good yarn told in poetic form by C.Morris (if my deciphering is correct) [I since believe that to be Charles Morris.]. Like a good yarn it is built up slowly and yet dramatically right up to the punch-line. This poem will make you chuckle hours after you've read It. Thanks to John Meredith who submitted it for publication.

TROUBLE BREWING
He came walking through the forest in the glaring summer's sun;,
In his left hand was a bottle - in the other was a gun.
His beard was wild and bushy and his hair was shaggy too.
His old straw hat was full of holes, and tufts of hair poked through.

I stood and waited for him as he came with steady stride,
And I studied his appearance till he soon was by my side.
He wasn't old, nor was he young, but somewhere in between
And heavy eyebrows almost hid his eyes of greyish green.

Then he handed me the bottle - "You must have a drink", he said,
And I heard him cock the rifle, and he aimed it at my head.
"Yes, take a swig of my home-brew. and you may be the first
To have a chance of trying out my recipe for thirst".

And the rifle never wavered an it pointed straight at me,
And that close-up gaping barrel was a nasty thing to see.
I lifted up the bottle with a very shaky hand,
And a silent prayer to Heaven, as I followed his command.

I swallowed twice, and God Above! that brew had come from Hell.
And I heard my head exploding, and it drowned my dying yell.
I fell upon the dusty ground and grovelled there in pain,
Vowing he could shoot me, but I wouldn't drink again.

When the pain and shock receded, and I staggered to my feet,
"It was awful! It was awful.' I could hear myself repeat.
Then I heard the brewer speaking, and he said "Yea, I agree
"Now give me back that bottle, and you hold the gun on we".

I have not heard Martyn do it, either as a song or a poem and I know no established tune for it. There was a series of cartoons relating to this poem on the wall at "Tritton Hall", the Bush Music Club HQ when Martyn last performed for us a few years back but I presme he found the poem by independent research.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

We have had him perform here in Bath and the man is phenomenal. He sits on a simple piano bench and sings in that high clear tenor voice. Usually he accompanies himself on the guitar and sometimes he sings without it. And then there is the poetry. Wonderful stuff.

Can I ask here if anyone has the words to a poem I heard Wyndham-Reed recite about moonshiners in Australia? It is the poem where the moonshiner hold a gun on his victim and makes him drink. The moonshine is terrible stuff and when the victim's head clears the moon shiner hands over the gun and asks the victim to force him to drink too.
