Hey there, this is Kathmandoobiedoo. I was wondering if anyone has some information about this song I heard on a silly wizard album.

By the storm torn shoreline a woman is standing the spray strung like jewels in her hair and the sea tore the rocks near that desolate landing as though it had known she stood there

Is it a Manx song? Does anyone know who wrote it? What its title might be? Its history?

Anyway our neighbours have been doing a seven day worship for Krishna and each day we are hearing songs to Krishna, while the pandit tells stories for hours... stories about Krishna's life, Shiva, Buddha, and Local Newari tales, etc...It's wonderful that these traditions are kept alive!

I'd also like details on this song. I sing it often

It's called "The Fisherman's Wife." Can't get to my copy of the CD to see who wrote it, but I believe that it's tradional. There is a Silly Wizard website, lots of good informaton on the band and lyrics.

I have this on an ancient LP by Jeff Cripps and Loisa Rugg. I'll look and see if there are any sleeve notes.

Did you want the lyrics?

Wandering Minstrel, I sing the same words that the DT has here. If the lyrics that you have are different in any way I would be glad to see them as well as any information about the song that the sleeve notes give you. Thanks.

Ah-ha! Another case of Andy M. writing one that sounds ancient. What talent! (Sorry, just had to add that.)

This is what it says on the sleeve of 'Wild & Beautiful':
[1981:] In recent times, the North Sea has exacted a terrible toll of lives from the small fishing-ports of the North-East of Scotland, with boats being lost every year. The effect this has on a tiny town is nothing short of catastrophic. Andy lived for a time in the fishing port of Buckie, and has written this song as a tribute to the courage of the fishermen and their families, although it is primarily a condemnation of the circumstances and pressures that force them into such a hazardous profession. (Notes Silly Wizard, 'Wild & Beautiful')

The music is in Andy Stewarts book, with much the same liner notes. We do this one regularly (specially since we live by the sea)

Thanks a whole lot everyone, I'm glad to know who wrote the song and why. I wonder why I thought it was Manx. Funny how an idea gets stuck in your mind. I'm curious Gypsy, which sea do you live by? I miss the sea...

Sophocles

Thats the very song. The sleevenotes on the Cripps album say "Stewart arr. Cripps 3'20"" and thats all I'm afraid.

Still a lovely song which goes nicely in Am/F. I must start singing it again.

AWM: Would those be the only two chords you use? We do it in Em/G/Am. I'll have to try it.

Am/F/C/G
Am/G/Am-C(slide on man)
Am/F/C/G
Em/Am/C/Am

or thereabouts. AWM
