Subject: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Ferrara Date: 20 Sep 00 - 01:47 PM The latest program details on the FSGW Getaway2000 are posted here There's lots of new stuff still planned but we have to coordinate with all the workshop leaders so it takes time... Let me know if you've taken a look at this. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: MMario Date: 20 Sep 00 - 01:58 PM *sigh* I just can't swing this this year. And I was so excited when I found out it WASN'T being held Columbus Day weekend - for which I have a prior long-standing committment. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: karen k Date: 20 Sep 00 - 02:42 PM Rita, This is looking great! Can't wait. How am I going to get to everything I want to. I know some will conflict! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my favorites won't. You are doing a wonderful job with this and it sure is nice to know what's happening ahead of time. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Bill D Date: 20 Sep 00 - 05:55 PM so...that's 3 weeks of stuff to do in 3 days...we either need a time machine or I need to be cloned |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Sep 00 - 09:58 PM If you're coming, and want to participate in a workshop, NOW is the time to start learning appropriate material. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 21 Sep 00 - 12:31 AM Rita ... The program looks great! One thing, though, I'm a Plain Ol' "Jenny" ... named after my great-grandmother, who was a Plain Ol' "Jenny," too. Oh, and this will teach me to keep my BFM shut, the next time I'm trying to be humourous in writing. See what happens ... I volunteer to do a kazoo workship for kids!! Have you ever heard the entire score of "The Barber of Seville" played on kazoo? We'll y'll are in for a real treat! But bring cushions for the after dinner "concert," it's gonna be a loooooooong evening!!!!!!!
|
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Sep 00 - 12:38 AM Jen, you are hereby placed on the campfire program. Please??? I would like to request the "Washington Post March." Yes, I will play "second kazoo" and accompany you. Trouble is, I tend to get the giggles when I do it. Rita, are you going to supply kazoos for the kids, so that maybe I could have them kazoo together at the campfire? -Joe Offer, campfire songleader- |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Sep 00 - 12:54 AM I asked Bill in chat and it seems he has decided on cloning. This could work out well for Rita as she can now indulge those feelings of frustration and kill him without guilt or criminal charges. Spaw |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 21 Sep 00 - 01:08 AM Joe ... you know I'm scared to death of kids!!!!!! But maybe there's safety in numbers?????????? Well ... "kazoo kazoo?" How do I get a rosewood kazoo? I can play the tenor kazoo and you can play the baritone kazoo. Ah, the ideas are storming through my little pea brain like Hurricane Hazel ... L' Boheme with kazoos and pennywhistle Beethoven's 5th arranged for kazoos, pennywhistles, and Jew's Harp The Grande Finale will be "Selected Showstoppers from Broadway's Greatests" ... Bye, Bye Birdie; Anything Goes; Slaughter on 10th Avenue; Li'l Abner; No, No Nanette. Rita ... can you fit this into your program? moonjen whoisnowallowing6hourspernighttopracticekazooand2hourspernighttopracticegeetar |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Jeri Date: 21 Sep 00 - 09:27 AM Moonjen, were you a victim of the Moose Turd Pie form of scheduling? ("There's no kazoo workshop!" Well, there is now, and guess who's leading it!") I notice there's no sea chantey/work song workshop(s). Good, though... ...and the informal one will probably take place in the dining room. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 21 Sep 00 - 09:57 AM Jeri ... Ya gotta be careful of that Rita gal! If you don't want her to give you a "job," keep your lips zipped.

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Ferrara Date: 21 Sep 00 - 02:18 PM Umm, yeah, Jeri, we did finally get a leader for sea chanties but you missed the job by just a day or two!!! -- actually, now I think about it, he hasn't confirmed. Be ready. I've already made the pie crust, you just need to add the filling.... You have to match the leader to the workshop, I would not be the person to lead shanties for example. So we are still struggling with a few important ones including the Country & Western jam. It has to be someone I'm familiar enough with, to be sure they can keep a jam going.... stuff like that. As to workshops, we have union and other workers' songs in the Songs of Struggle, and songs about working in Occupational Hazards, so decided to maybe wait a year on work songs, ie songs to be sung while doing a job (includes shanties really), not just songs about a job or about working. True confessions time: we actually had work songs scheduled. But then asked Barry to lead Songs of Ireland and the Irish because we have some great singers of Irish and Irish-american music again this year. Trying to get some variety rather than repeat last year's program. Joe, I intend to buy kazoos once I know about how many kids are coming. Jen, can I set your workshop for Saturday so the kids will be all ready and primed for the kazoo ensemble at the campfire sing? One of you, nudge me if it gets too close to the Getaway and I haven't said I've bought kazoos yet. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Fortunato Date: 21 Sep 00 - 03:48 PM Rita, I'm sorry I've been late in responding, I had to work out some gig scheduling, so yes, if you still need someone I'll be happy to lead the country and western jam. "Oooooweee, Maudie, they got both kinds of music! Country and Western!" A prize will be awarded to the first person to sing "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose". regards, Fortunato AKA Chance Shiver |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: karen k Date: 21 Sep 00 - 03:51 PM Just pm'd Jenny to let her know where to get a rosewood kazoo so she should be all set. Rick Fielding puts plastic funnels into the holes and boy what a sound that makes! I'll be bringing mine (no funnels though) and hope to get to that workshop. Love kazoos. It's about the only instrument that I can play melody on! k |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Jeri Date: 21 Sep 00 - 05:30 PM RITA!!!! I said "good though!!!" No fair! Me doing a sea chantey workshop would go something like "ok, does anybody know any? They're those songs you sing when you haul on the various doohickeys on big boats...and capstans. Whatever the hell a capstan is." |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 21 Sep 00 - 05:56 PM Oooh Rita, it looks so good! Perhaps you could move to 24 hour scheduling for those people who only sleep on their feet at the Getaway! Then you could really fit everything in. For those interested in Workshops, the idea is for the leader to get the thing going, but then for people to contribute songs appropos the topic. That's what Dick is referring to in his post. The digital tradition of course is a dynomite! resource. I volunteered to run the Drinking Songs workshop (hey, I'm teetotaler when it come to alcoholic brews, but I'm an Addictions Specialist by trade, so I know a few things) Look up "@drink" in the DT and you will find a ton of songs. You should find a drinking song you want to learn or one you just maybe forgot you knew. Refresh your memory and come on in. Oh, yes! Go see Mike Agranoff if you haven't. He an unclaimed gem of a folkie from New Jersey (no that's not a contradiction in terms). Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 21 Sep 00 - 06:03 PM Oh .... Jeri! What did I tell you?!? Make "fun" and look what it got you into!!!!!!! I think you'll do swell at leading a sea chantey workshop. All your friends will be there to support you, athletic or otherwise ... And didn't you start a thread about women and sea chanteys? Time to put the "music where your mouth is." Rita ... you're doing a fine job! But now I see how you get all these people to lead workshops. You are the most innocent, underhanded woman I know!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: GUEST,Ferrara Date: 21 Sep 00 - 06:19 PM Using Bill's sign-on. Jeri, you're off the hook. Your example of your shantey leading technique did the trick... Sneaky lady. We do have a couple back-ups. Umm, fortunato, you're off the hook too, unless you want to co-lead with TJ O'Malley. In that case just PM me and I'll get you his phone#. Nan Goland wanted to do "Telephone Songs," because she did C&W last year, so she called TJ and talked him into doing C&W. She must have contacted me by phone at just about the time you were posting to this thread. (I was virtuously typing up our fall craft show schedule at the time, not wasting time on the Mudcat....) You folks are getting a real-time glimpse of how all this stuff goes round... and round ... Good tho. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Fortunato Date: 22 Sep 00 - 09:09 AM Rita, Yes, I heard from TJ at rehearsal last night that he was leading the workshop, and there's no one better! He's much more into country than I am these days, and I'm glad to see there's a Carter Family Workshop, Susette and I will be there! You and Bill can get a preview of our Carter Family stuff on the 14th at the Royal Mile, hope to see you. Bill will be interested in Susette's autoharp playing. Regards, Chance/Fortunato |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Sep 00 - 11:45 AM I think you should reconsider Jeri for the chantey workshop. It would have to be entertaining. Spaw |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 22 Sep 00 - 11:58 AM I think I've got it! I think I've got it! How 'bout moonjen and jeri ... sea chanteys on kazoo? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Bill D Date: 22 Sep 00 - 02:20 PM can't be any worse than when the Dry Branch Fire Squad used to do "Fox on the Run" ..ALL of it...entirely on kazoos! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 22 Sep 00 - 03:54 PM Ok!Ok! (think of Joe Pesci in Lethal Weapon 2,3,4) I just ordered two Rosewood kazoos from John Foley (thank you karen k.!). What a genuinely nice man. It was like doin' business with Sandy and Caroline Paton, which isn't like doing business at all. It's more like having just a nice conversation about kazoos, and woods, and stuff. One for me and one for whosomeever will help me lead this Kazoo Workshop for Kids. (Jeri, it has your "name" on it!!!!) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: Fortunato Date: 22 Sep 00 - 06:49 PM well bill, scholars differ about the actual obtaining of fox on the run by the dry branch fire squad on kazoos. Personally I feel they failed to achieve the musicality what am in the song. over fortunato |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: GUEST,ShadowMonk Date: 22 Sep 00 - 11:45 PM Okay... Mom, Dad, you never told me there was going to be a Sea Chanty workshop at the Getaway. You know, I WOULD like to know these things. Alright... I guess I'll just have to try to talk Maria into it. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 22 Sep 00 - 11:49 PM Hmmmmm? And who would Guest,ShadowMonk's Mom and Dad be? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: GUEST,ShadowMonk Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:03 PM Bill D and Ferrara are my parents, moonjen. I'm away at college and they're supposed to keep me up on this stuff! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: bbelle Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:18 PM ShadowMonk ... I knew that, I was just teasing! Talked to your mom, last week, and she was telling me about "college" and your new love of sea chanteys. You've given them a wonderful "gift." Hope to see you at The Getaway. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway - Program Details From: GUEST,ShadowMonk Date: 23 Sep 00 - 03:01 PM Yeah, well I hope to be at the Getaway, but there's a number of complications. The biggest one being my girlfriend. She's comming to see me that weekend. She likes the Getaway too, but we're not sure if we can get there, or if we can both afford it. I'm planning to give it my best shot though, so don't count me out yet. Mom, if you happen to read this, my paycheck hasn't arrived yet, my books cost a total of $320 so far, and I'm down to my last $24, so send money. |
