Too bad you will be visiting the wrong Portland!

(Ducking from the barage of West Coast stones, bricks, and jello cups he runs away)

Ha ha Naemanson! It's not that bad, now is it? I've never been to the east coast one, but would like to someday. Must be beautiful this time of year.

KT, I have emailed a friend with your request. I've been trying to entice him to visit the Mudcat, so maybe he will show up. He is in Portland and knows tons of people and goings-ons. He keeps telling us about it hoping we will move out there. If he does show up I will owe ya one!:-)

There is only one 'right' Portland. The original one, here in Dorset.

Gotta concede, Naem, that they've got most of the "original" places back in Ye Auld Counterie - including Yarmouth, begads! I'll bet THEY don't have a "Paris", "China", or "Peru" though! It can be a little confusing when we hear about "Portland" - is it "ours" or "the other one"? Music is happenin' in both towns, Dear Hearts, so don't despair!

Oh and I forgot, if you're into poetry there are several places that hold open mike sessions....Cafe Lena on Hawthorne holds one every Tuesday, I believe, or at least they used to....been out of the loop for several years now...

Liz no, not on any regular basis. And that's miles away in WEYMOUTH!

On the island, there is a regular Wednesday session at The New Star in Fortuneswell.

Linda Mattson gave you the URL for Portland Folklore Society, and that's a great start. They've got events listed as well as the times and addresses of song circles. Shanghaied on the Willamette is playing on Sep 30 at the Hillsboro Farmers Market (in Hillsboro, of course) 9 am-1 pm . They are a lot of fun and worth going to see. There are some bluegrass jams in Vancouver (just across the Columbia river from Portland). The Washington bluegrass assn page with the info is here . This one is on Wednesday night, and on Thursday night there is an old time jam at the Salmon Creek Brewery and Pub in Vancouver on Evergreen at Washington. I like this one because of the fiddlers that show up. (I'm on the banjo) You can always message me if you have any other questions... glad to help out. I hope you have fun in Portland!! Margo

If you go to the Portland Folklore Society calendar you will find concert info, jam info, dance info and a buncha links that will take you other places. I'm usually at the pubsing Mary mentioned; the next one is Oct 3.
You just missed Si Kahn; John Gorka will be in town, Emmylou Harris, if that's your cup'a tea, or Neil Young. Andrew Calhoun and Claire Bard should be having a house concert next week, not sure where yet. Andrew is the owner of Waterbug records, a great singer-songwriter label, as well as being a wonderful songwriter himself.
Sacred Harp this afternoon. When you gonna be here? blessings,
Barbara

KT, in the not-so-distant past, my brother has taken me to Fruitland Open Mike- in Washington, I think?- and to an open mike in a grange hall in Portland. Each happens once a month, I think, and they're great fun. Ask around.

Ebbie

Thanks, all, for the ideas! Now I'm really getting excited to go! I'm already sorry I won't be there longer! I want to do it all!

Casting my vote for Shanghaied on the Willamette. Saw them at Tumbleweed with a bunch of other shanty singers, even with all the rain, it was fantastic. Have a great trip.
