Subject: Not folk - but reissues of interest From: Stewie Date: 26 Sep 00 - 07:43 PM Not folk, but these recent reissues will be of interest to some 'Catters. I draw attention to them as such things have a habit of slipping through the cracks and disappearing unnoticed. Adelphi/Genes have reissued 2 gems from the early Adelphi catalogue:
Paul Geremia 'Hard Luck Rockin' Chair' Adelphi/Genes The Rounders is the full catastrophe, with Reisch, Remaily et alia as well as Weber and Stampfel. Lucky Dog have reissued a great, but almost forgotten, Bill Joe Shaver Columbia album: Billy Joe Shaver 'Salt of the Earth' Lucky Dog This may have been the first album on which Billy Joe was helped out with some great electric guitar from his son Eddy Shaver. It has some beaut Shaver songs such as 'Sweet Mama', 'Hill Country Love Song' and 'Street Walkin' Woman'. Lucky Dog have also released a compilation of The O'Kanes (Jamie O'Hara and Kieran Kane). It's compiled mostly from two excellent, but long gone, albums - 'The O'Kanes' and 'Tired of the Runnin''. The only negative is that it's only 10 tracks, when they could have put both albums in their entirety on the CD. There's only one track overlap with the only O'Kanes CD 'Imagine That' - 'This Ain't Love'. The O'Kanes 'The Only Years' Lucky Dog Kieran Kane is still active with his Dead Reckoning label, but what has happened to Jamie O'Hara? After one excellent post-O'Kanes album, 'Rise Above It', he seems to have disappeared. Artists that I like have an unfortunate habit of doing this. --Stewie.

Subject: RE: Not folk - but reissues of interest From: Stewie Date: 26 Sep 00 - 07:49 PM Geez, I must be seeing things. The latter two-thirds of the original message was bold a minute ago, but now has reverted to normal. |

Subject: RE: Not folk - but reissues of interest From: Jim the Bart Date: 27 Sep 00 - 02:11 PM Does Adelphi have a web site? I'd like to get the Holy Modal Rounders stuff. Also, who is Lucky Dog? I was lucky enough to get the two O'Kane's CD's you mention as punch outs at a downtown record store for (get this) $1.00 per disc! These are truly fine recordings - great vocals, great "roots" arrangements, great writing. . . Haven't heard any of Jamie O'Hara's stuff, but Dead Reckoning is an unbelievable collection of creative artists. Although you preface this thread by saying "not folk" I personally think the recordings you're talking about here carry on the tradition. The emphasis is on strong songs - the type that speak to all kinds of people in all kinds of situations. This is not "product" and it merits listening and support. Thanks for the thread, Stewie, I 'preciate it. |

Subject: RE: Not folk - but reissues of interest From: Stewie Date: 27 Sep 00 - 07:09 PM Hi Bartholomew, I didn't know those O'Kanes records ever made it to CD. I have them only on LP, and had thought 'Imagine That' was their only CD. I don't think Adelphi/Genes has a website. It does have an email address: adelphi@erols.com. The Rounders 'Last Round' CD is available at CDNow. Lucky Dog seems to be a recent sub-label of Sony for reissue stuff. It has the 2 albums that I mentioned plus others by Marty Stuart, Rodney Crowell, Joy Lynn White and Shelby Lynne. If you like the O'Kanes, you will also love a new live recording by Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch. It is titled '11/12/13 Live in Melbourne'. It was released in Australia on the Shock label, but is also available on Dead Reckoning. It is totally acoustic - just the 2 of them with guitars, sharing their songs. Lovely stuff! Unreservedly recommended. Jamie O'Hara's 'Rise Above It' was released by RCA in 1994 (RCA 66297-2). All the songs are O'Hara compositions - 'Rise Above It', '50,000 Names', 'For Reasons I've Forgotten' etc. I don't know whether it's still in print, but definitely worth seeking out. Cheers, Stewie. |
