I just put a couple more songs in Esperanto on my website, the Cherry Tree Carol, which is well-known (and the Esperanto version is similar to the Baez one), and then Koko krias jam, which I don't know anything about provenance-wise. I have a hunch it's Hungarian, maybe from the corpus Bartok collected, or Kodaly or somebody, but I'm really not sure. Do any Mudcatters recognize the tune or know anything more about it?

I have also installed a fledgling index to songs on my site, here, but I think the only one there so far that I haven't mentioned here is my version of The Gambler in Esperanto.

It sounds like a csardas melody--It sounds vaguely like a song that I once heard a Tatro Slovak community group sing, while they were dancing--this in Bethleham PA a number of years ago.

Nice cheery little ditty, isn't it?

There is a tradition of singing among young women in the certain parts of Hungary, and also into the Tatro Slovak area, the singing generally is done while dancing (tradtitionally, with no other musical accompaniment)--I have heard many recordings, mostly revivalists, and a few of performing groups as well--it is quite beautiful to hear a group of women sing this music, but the original language is difficult for non-native speakers, so not often included in eclectic folk repertoires. They will not be the same in english or esperanto, because Hungarian has a different stress pattern--but the melodies are so wonderful!!

The link in the first post in this thread seems to be dead. The lyrics in Haruo's post are reminiscent of the Hungarian song, Szol A Kakas Mar. The song was very popular among the Jewish population of the region, and they changed the lyrics to a song about Zion, see http://zemerl.com/cgi-bin//show.pl?title=Szol+a+kakas+mar

It was recorded by Muzsikas on the album Maramaros. Yale Strom also recorded a version.

There are videos and other info on the web, just type the name of the song into your favorite search engine.
