Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Sourdough Date: 14 Oct 00 - 11:57 PM Avoiding totally the topic of Mbo, I ant to carry on the thread creep: I am getting ready for a May 2001 trip from California to Connecticut and back on my bike, a well tested 1983 R-80RT from the wonderful folks at Bavarian Motorcycles. I've been looking at other bikes thinking that taking an 18 year old machine that I have put 80K miles on is risky but it is such a good bike. Twice I have had 1000 mile plus days. This is a real road eater. Present plan is to have the engine "refreshed" and the bike painted and then do it. I do get some oil drops, three or four, after a yhard ride and it offends my aesthetic sensibilities and motorcycles are an aesthetic experience as well as other things. I like getting the bike out in the world, putting it alongside other bikes (it looks great) and then seeing how many of those bikes it takes to add up to my motorcycle's total mileage. Yes, I have looked at the Harleys, Gold Wings and the new touring bikes including the Native American but I am pretty sure I am going to Go Deutsch on my Deutsch Treat. Sourdough |

"How Can I Miss You, If You Won't Go Away" |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Oct 00 - 04:14 PM Once when I was young a friend who was involved in peace movcement stuff with me phoned my home and asked my mother if I was there, and she said something about me not being there any more, and the lad, being of a melodranatic disposition, took it that I'd gone and died. So he was ringing round and organising a memorial service and so forth. Fortunately I ran into him before he'd got too far with it.
But if he had got a bit further, and there'd been people saying what a great fella I was and how they'd all miss me, I imagine it might have been a bit embarrassing for everyone, including me, if I turned up again.
So I'm wondering if Mbo might have just posted that Oasis song because he liked it, and was feeling like sharing it with us, and he never got round to adding in the explanatory bit, or left it out on purpose, as a jeu d'esprit, on the eve of going off for a break.
In which case how's he going to feel reading all this stuff? Especially the nice bits, anyone can shrug off insults, but sincere tributes are a bit harder. You know, I think if it was me, I'd get meself a new cookie and come in as a stranger.
Did they show Reginald Perrin on TV in America? |

Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Big Mick Date: 14 Oct 00 - 04:00 PM Hey Groucho.............bite me!!!! What the hell you doing, throwing research and appropriate dates on me when I am trying to wax poetic. I hate it when the facts get in the way of a good story. It just ain't the Irish way........hahahahahahaha..............it was meant as a rhetorical comment on the furor caused by Dylan leaving the "pure form". You are absolutely correct on Houston at that time, but I believe that I read in Joe Klein's that Gutherie and he had become disenchanted with Dylan early on over some of this stuff. I will have to go pull that out and find the timeframe. Interesting, your take on Geer. While it is true that he was never a singer on the level of the others, he was surely a singer. I believe he performed extensively in the Village. I will check that out and get back to you. In fact he apparently said that every time Gutherie stayed at his place he had to replace his Martin guitar as Woody would borrow it. Anyway, Matt, ignore that picky prick Marxist and take the message for what it is worth. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 14 Oct 00 - 02:51 PM What's a SandyToes? |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Groucho Marxist (inactive) Date: 14 Oct 00 - 02:37 PM Mick, By the time Dylan went electric in 1965, Cisco Houston had been dead for four years and Woody Guthrie was into the final stages of his battle with Huntington's Disease (he died in 1967). I don't think it would have bothered Odetta because she did albums with electric backing in the '60s herself (she did a great version of "Strawberry Fields Forever"). As for Will Geer, he was an actor whose connection to folk music was primarily through friends like Woody and Cisco. Groucho |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Big Mick Date: 14 Oct 00 - 02:26 PM Matt, Sorry to see you go, it has been great having you here. Gave the place a different feel, you were kind of like our collective kid. You reminded me what it must have been like for Guthrie, Geer, Houston, Odetta and company when the spiritual heir(Dylan) to their legacy plugged in that electric guitar. Do well, keep in touch, get regular xercise, practice every day, and don't forget to eat your vegetables. Oh,.......and watch your mouth young man. You are not to old for a whuppin'. LOL. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Naemanson Date: 14 Oct 00 - 01:54 PM OK folks, break it up. There's nothing more to be seen here. Why don't you all go home and let things sort themselves out. Oh, you're already home. Well then let's go annoy another thread. To the Matt supporters, your hearts are in the right place but let's not go overboard. He needs to fly and he is doing the same thing young people have done for generations. If you love something let it go... To the Matt detractors, I'm sorry you feel about him as you do and I certainly won't argue the matter with you. I'm sure you feel justified and our discussion cannot change that. To the lurkers: See! We're human after all! |

Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: SINSULL Date: 14 Oct 00 - 01:19 PM I like Matthew and if he is gone from Mudcat, I will miss him. But I actually am glad to see that he is moving on to "real" people. That is where he belongs. He owes a lot to some of the people here and the Matthew I know appreciates it. That applies to any of you who risked hurting his feelings or bringing down the wrath of the 'Cat by pulling him up short when he got out of line. Kendall, the more Matt fights you, the more he shows his need to have your respect. Jon, you're right. He crossed the line more than once. I remember a young man whose anger took the form of destroying instruments or tossing them in the sea. Matt needs to show it differently. Neither is appropriate. Please don't take this as criticism. I agree with your take on the "shite" crack - it was unnecessarily cruel. My point is that young men use anger against the things and people they love most. Clinton, I would love to hear SandyToes' take on this. She's put up with a "touchy" artist for years. Spaw, I believe you've got it right. Sometimes the only way a young man can walk away from security and take the next step is to turn on those he loves most and declare his independence. Mine came back three years later and was astonished to find his family waiting for him with open arms. Matt isn't gone for good. |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Sorcha Date: 14 Oct 00 - 01:06 PM I just had an e mail from him, and he is not doing the suicide thing. There are other things wrong, but not that, so those of us who care can give a sigh of relief. Those of you who don't can go on about your business. |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: GUEST,Name Withheld Date: 14 Oct 00 - 01:03 PM I'm very worried about Matt/Mbo. For several weeks, he has frequently repeated that "Now That I've Taken My Life" is his favorite song. I hope that he was not dropping clues. I think that Kendall has been very mean to him and I hope that he hasn't gone over the edge. I know that I'll be flamed for posting as a guest. I don't care. I needed to say this and don't need the judgemental flames of Kendall and his friends coming down on me.

Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: Mooh Date: 14 Oct 00 - 11:50 AM Oh brother, here we go again. Yeah, Mbo adds to the wonderful world of Mudcat. So do lots of others. But for goodness sake let's keep our perspective. Gone or not, he's the boy who cried wolf if there ever was one. To swipe Soph's metaphor/analogy, he's being paper-trained at our collective expense. I just wish that he'd curb the crap postings and keep adding worthy postings because it's getting to the point where I avoid reading him if there's even a wiff of his bs. Thanks Soph, for the laugh. Oh yeah, and Mbo, assuming you're reading this, are you coming back next week or what? Mooh (using an Oasis disc as a coaster). |

Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: sophocleese Date: 14 Oct 00 - 09:35 AM This posting does not sound like the work of a sensitive, intelligent individual. It sounds bratty, whiney, self-centered and perhaps troubled. I think the earlier description of it as passive-aggressive behaviour seems suitable. He may have talent and I hope he grows up enough to use it with wit and empathy. But mostly I think he's still a puppy. Puppies can be cute and affectionate but they also need to be trained not to chew on the furniture or shit in the house. I have hopes that Mbo will turn into a decent dog and maybe the mixed bag of postings here will help. |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: kendall Date: 14 Oct 00 - 08:30 AM Actually, I dont much give a damn what some snot nosed teen age philosopher thinks of my music. And furthermore, he wasnt always compassionate either. When I told you all that I had to have an operation on my throat, and was quite worried about it, Mbo's only comment was "Ask what Gordon Bok would do." That didnt sound like compassion to me, it sounded like more of his compulsive posting. Someone called him MMMEEEbo. Right on.If he found another sand box to play in, thats ok by me. Now..flame if you must, but STAND FROM UNDER if you do. |

Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: wysiwyg Date: 14 Oct 00 - 01:09 AM Well I was hoping that this was just a way of his leaving as Mbo and coming back in as Matthew, but so far I don't see him thus. Maybe it is just that he went home for the weekend, and that he didn't realize how the post would sound. I'll try to call him over the weekend. There may be another factor here I can tap into as well. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Goodbye From: bbelle Date: 14 Oct 00 - 12:37 AM I am amazed at the lack of compassion for this "child." I have witnessed his show of compassion for others more than a few times on this forum. Matthew came into the mudcat because of his love for music, our kind of music. So, he is much younger and his tastes have a more modern edge, he's exposed a few of us to good music that we, otherwise, might not have heard. He has been flamed by people using aliases and even threatened personally, to the point that he was afraid to use his name on the forum. He has been treated meanly by some people and accused of "hogging" the microphone on HearMe. I've been on HearMe with him and never evidenced this. What I did see was him taking up slack when everyone else was trying to make up their minds whether or not to sing. This young man is intelligent, and sensitive, and talented, and for adults to treat him like this is a sin. So Guest, lone haranguer and Guest,Rose ... train your little insect antennae on someone else. Please feel free to flame me ... jenny |
