Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Allan C. Date: 24 Oct 00 - 09:50 PM So far I have heard Big Mick, Joe Offer, Pete Peterson, Bert and Max. I am told that Dave Swain is there as well. I am not sure who it is that was playing the autoharp and singing (female). |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Allan C. Date: 24 Oct 00 - 09:59 PM That's Dick Greenhaus singing "The Winner". |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Charlie Baum Date: 24 Oct 00 - 10:00 PM It's just like the Getaway is still going on! Wish I were there. But you need to either have someone introduce the performers or have them introduce themselves. I know who the performers are, only because I know who they are (I mean, I know them personally), but they're anonymous to anyone who doesn't know them. Great show! --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: MMario Date: 24 Oct 00 - 10:11 PM sounds more like a flock of ducks tonight! |

Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Allan C. Date: 24 Oct 00 - 10:48 PM I'd like to know the name of Pete's mystery guest. Anyone know? |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Allan C. Date: 24 Oct 00 - 10:52 PM It has been going for an hour and three quarters, LL. And yes, you did. |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Allan C. Date: 24 Oct 00 - 11:16 PM I am pretty sure that has been Dick Swain singing the seafaring songs and playing various squeezeboxes. ('Scuse me for calling him Dave above.) |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: katlaughing Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:21 AM Well, they went until just a few minutes ago and it was fantastic!! I agree the performers need to be introduced, etc. and it would be better if there was more light on thier faces, but for a first time ever it was just BRILL!! Great job and thanks to every one of you! My heart was melted, my funny bone tickled, and I had a warm glow just thinking about you all being there and making Mudcat, nay, world history! Congratulations, Max, Jeff, MaryMac and everyone else who helped out and participated. WOW!! Over 4 hours!! luvyakat |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Sorcha Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:26 AM Mystery guest with Pete was Eileen or Ellen--from Harrisburg PA. Wish the auto harp had been miked more. Yea, you need an emcee or something with this format, and the vocals need to be clearer. Be nice, too, if someone could actually run the vid-cam and get some close ups and audience pans, but for a first run, it was FANTASTIC!! Is this the every week format, now? |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: dwditty Date: 25 Oct 00 - 07:34 AM Thoroughly enjoyable - and I don't have a hangover!!! The sound and video were great here. Some folks stepped right up to the mics and could be heard well. The others were still fine, but I don't think their lack of volume was so much a technical issue as it was just a distance-from-the mic issue. The audience was very clear. In fact, during a couple of performances, I could hear some playing off to the side as others got ready to play. Now, is this a regular gig? All in all, Max, another homerun for Daddy Mudcat. Congrats on a great job to you and all the others that were involved, too. Thanks. dw |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Jon Freeman Date: 25 Oct 00 - 11:44 AM What a great first gig it was too. I would have loved to have stayed to the end but by 12am (5am to me) tiredness really started to hit me. Thanks to everyone for a thoroughly enjoyable show. Jon |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: MMario Date: 25 Oct 00 - 11:45 AM I could hear the audience better then some of the performers. (This is NOT a complaint, just a comment on the audio.) Never got a clear picture - but that could be transmission or my 'puter, not the setup. have about 20 minutes left to listen to, have enjoyed it all. and it has sure made the morning go fast! |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Áine Date: 25 Oct 00 - 12:18 PM Congratulations to all on the webcast! Max, Bert, and all the folks at Mudcat Headquarters deserve big cudos for making this happen. I couldn't stay for the entire event; but, what I saw and heard was fantastic. You all were simply mahvahlahs! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:19 PM The camera-microphone setup would have made Rube Goldberg jealous. Max hooked two microphone stands together so they reached the ceiling, and then anchored them to the ceiling with a bungee cord. I sat on a bar stool next to the pole next to the pole, to prevent boozy patrons from knocking the camera out of alignment (and of course, I'm the one who bumped the pole mid-broadcast and blurred the video). The camera and microphone were attached to the pole with several varieties of tape. For the audio, we ran a wire out the window of Max's office and through the front door of the tavern, which was conveniently located below. The video was transmitted by from the bar to a receiver in Max's office. The video came through very well on a VCR we had hooked to the camera, but the RealProducer video wasn't so good. In the future, Max hopes to patch directly into the PA system and get better audio - but this was a first-time thing, and you can't expect perfection. Pene was stuck in Max's office, tending to all the equipment and making sure Mudcat didn't crash. I guess I was the only performer who had never performed in a bar before. I sing at two Masses every Sunday, but that's a bit different. I didn't expect to be asked to perform at all. I'm sure glad Max asked me to sing - I had a great time. Now it's time for me to hit the road and see the leaves before they hit the ground. You wouldn't believe how beautiful this area is. West Chester is a great town, a suitable home for Mudcat. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Night Owl Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:45 PM thank you Joe, (and Mary) for singing "River"!!! Anyone take pictures of the "creative technology" for Mudcats events photo page???? All I can say is AWESOME....simply AWESOME last night.....ALL of you. |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Oct 00 - 01:59 PM First time I've had a chance to get back and say how much I enjoted the show. Everyone was obviously having a fine time and the performances were all just great. Mick may have some old jokes, but the boy tells them with style and has superb stage presence.......Wonderful job my friend. Joe did a great job and I think you need to hang out in bars more often Joebro! Dick and Dick and acll had some great stuff there too. Pete, you and Elaine make a fine duo and I only regret we were all not there in person because the sound setup did not do you justice. I enjoyed your Carter song immensely. Max and Bert....as always a fine job. I had to leave around 11:30 or so as the kids seemed to be having a tough night, but I was impressed with the show as a first attempt. Hey...DIDN'T CRASH DID IT??? With a few adjustments things ought to go nowhere but up, although I can't imagine a finer group to kick things off!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Mark Clark Date: 25 Oct 00 - 06:56 PM I don't think I can add to what others have said except to say that I really enjoyed the couple of hours I got to see. Great job! - Mark |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Burke Date: 25 Oct 00 - 07:16 PM I had to miss it, but haven't entirely. It's in the archives! So far I've caught the first hour & 1/2. Skip the first 15 minutes. Looks like it was lots of fun. |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: katlaughing Date: 25 Oct 00 - 07:33 PM I think it is supposed to be once per month from now on. |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Big Mick Date: 25 Oct 00 - 09:02 PM What a night!!! I knew we were in for something special when Pete and Aileen showed up. I was sitting there trying to figure out what to play, dead tired from the Getaway. I listened as they tuned and warmed up for the Carter Family stuff. They were excellent to say the least. Then Pete asked if I wanted him to back me on anything. If you heard his banjo work on The Foggy Dew, he learned that in about one run through. And what a very nice person. The brew pub was very accomodating. And a lively crowd which always makes performing fun. To say our Max is a talented blues player is understatement taken to its nth degree. He has excellent skills on his instrument, and great interpretive skills with the lyrics. And all this after cobbling up the damndest, Rube Goldberg looking set of devices I have ever seen. Bert was his usual, funny as hell, and very talented self. I laughed my arse off everytime he started. Although he did sing one drinking song that I didn't think would ever end. And the folks that came with him knew every damn word........the man brings his own crowd with him. He was great. I don't think I have to tell anyone here about Dick Greenhaus. But if you look closely you will see that sometime between him leaving the Getaway on Monday and getting to the Pub on Tuesday, he got in a fight with a hedgetrimmer and lost. His index finger on his picking hand was pretty tore up and had to be stitched. So he just picks minus a finger. And teaches me songs while we are waiting our turn to go on. Joebro was having entirely too damn much fun. I think he might get used to this carousing, flirting with the women and singing in bars thing. And his deadpan renditions had us cracking up off camera. I left the pub at about 12:35 AM after hugs all around and drove through the night. As I travelled the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Is there a straight, flat section of that damn road anywhere?) my head was filled with thoughts of this wonder we call the Mudcat Cafe. I had just spent another fantastic weekend at the Getaway, and topped it off with a most memorable evening in West Chester. And such wonderful friends that have been made along the way. All because I needed some lyrics............... Mick |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: alison Date: 26 Oct 00 - 12:40 AM I'm listening now... sounds great... did you take video? and does it work on playback? all I'm seeing on screen is an empty stage........ slainte alison |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: kimmers Date: 26 Oct 00 - 12:49 AM Drat. Tried to watch/listen for a while and what I saw looked and sounded great... then my husband yelled, "You're sucking up all the bandwidth! Turn it off!!" Sigh. |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: alison Date: 26 Oct 00 - 01:10 AM getting some pics..... but all stills ..... Big Mick has been sitting still for 20 mins..... not that I'm complaining *grin* Joe is singing "Power in the blood"... and the dancing sheep actually bobs in time with it...... I switched to the sheep to see if it updated the video.. but no luck... still it all sounds great slainte alison |
Subject: RE: First Official Mudcat Gig From: Naemanson Date: 28 Oct 00 - 07:10 AM I had to be at a rehearsal that evening (I believe a creditable excuse for not being here to participate) but I got home around 10:30 and tuned in for a few minutes before bed. It looked like people were enjoying themselves but I had no idea of who was who. Definitely need an Emcee for the next one. As the years progress and I meet more and more of you this will not be a problem but for now, it is. Great job Max! Congratulations to you and the crowd who pitch in to help. So here's a GOOD ON YA for Bert, Pene, and any and all who are there for you and for us. |
