Subject: Bugle Marches and Quicksteps From: GUEST,NightWing Date: 19 Oct 00 - 08:35 PM I'm interested in the bugle. Been playing since Boy Scout days and now (for reasons too complicated to go into here), I've found an actual excuse to play fairly often. I've been doing some looking around and have found some good sources for the military bugle calls: Taps and the like. But on one of the sites I found were a handful of bugle marches and/or quicksteps. Toward the bottom of this page The first question is the obvious: Does anyone know where I can come up with sheet music for tunes like this, with parts? I'm most interested in (roughly) Civil War vintage, but one of my sources informed me that there simply weren't many of them published then ... by anybody. So ANY similar songs would be welcome. Second question: What is a "quickstep" anyway? How is it different from a march? BB, NightWing |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Bugle Marches and Quicksteps From: Uncle Jaque Date: 20 Oct 00 - 12:28 AM Have you gotten in touch with R.J. SAMP? He is one of the foremost "Gurus" of ACW military / reenacting bugling, and has a nifty website. He also has a couple of instructional tapes and booklets available, and I consider him my #1 resource for ACW bugling. I would post u a link, but this new beta-version browser won't let me do that for some reason... It's called "American Civil War Bugler" on erols.com/agarbeck/acwbugler/ or something like that. A Quickstep reffers to the tempo; a common marching cadance; R.J. can explain all that better than I. Yes, they did have "Martial Airs" for bugle, some in 3-part harmony! Mr. SAMP does one of them (melody only) on one of his tapes as a "Tattoo". If you are a Reenactor, RJ can help you get your Bugler impression right up to speed. What kind of bugle are you using? I have a fairly decent repro (?) "C" Clairon De' Ordnance, and it's a fine sounding horn - I just wish I played it competently! Let us know how you make out, here. "Uncle Jaque", 3rd Maine Reg'tl. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Bugle Marches and Quicksteps From: John in Brisbane Date: 20 Oct 00 - 07:29 AM Hi Nightwing, I posted a thread a few weeks ago at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=25856&messages=2 which gives complete band scores for a variety of marches, and they're free. If I remember there were also fanfares available, but you'd need to see what is suitable for bugles. Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Bugle Marches and Quicksteps From: NightWing Date: 20 Oct 00 - 03:07 PM Uncle Jacque, yes, I've talked to RJ. Seems like a very good guy, his website is great, and he is VERY knowledgeable. Through him I also connected up with another couple of people who know even more than he does. I'm going to order a couple of his books as soon as payday rolls around again. *G* John, WOW! At first glance, I'm not seeing anything appropriate for bugle (strictly pentatonic), but there's enough there it'll take some looking.
