Looking for the lyrics and tune for "It's Not Yet Day", as sung by Riggie Rackin. There seems to be a well known celtic variant with this title, but Riggy's sounds more English, or at least non-denomiational--less "love's fleeting moments" and more "push the jugge about". I may have the title wrong of course; "It's Not Yet Day" may just be the 'hook' in the chorus, and so be missing a possible digitrad hit. Are you out there, Rick?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Could this be a translation/takeoff on Nil Na La? Sorry for the lack of fada's? Tell us more of the lyrics or the premise of the song. The Irish version is about a Pub owner, his daughter and the arguments to get the layabouts out of the pub, and away from the fair daughters skirts..............LOL.

Hi twag! I thought that was the title as well at one time. It's actually called "Joke and Push About the Pitcher." Jeff Warner does the song here, and I got the lyrics from him. (The version he does now has changed quite a bit from the lyrics I posted.) It's an English song I believe, and was published in Folk Songs of the Upper Thames.

does anyone know the translation as sung by Kevin Mitchell, for 'Nil ,na La'? The chorus goes: Here's the day, it's not the day Here's the day,the night is over Here's the day, it's not the day It's only the moon to guide the rover.

I need the verses in singable form if possible

cailin

I sing a slightly different translation from Kevin

A restless sleep was mine last night
with din and craic not of me choosin'
Me daughter up til morning light
Berating them that sat there boosing.

Ta 'n-a la etc....

Come landlord join us in the snug
All useless thoughts of slumber scorning
There's not a drop in jar or jug
That we can't sup before the morning.

I'll stay in bed the landlord said
But if I don't you'll be out the quicker
You've had your share of swipes and swills
You'll not touch any of my good liquor.

The shebeen has me socks and shoes
The tavern has me coat and britches
I've no young woman's love to lose
Me cows break loose among the ditches.

While I can spend I can treat a friend
So's here me guinea on the table
Set the barrel on its end
Let us drink while we're still able.

It is the day It's not the day
It is the day the night is over
It's not the day whatere you say
The moon shines bright to light the rover.

I can send you a 'literal' translation from the Irish if you would like

Sorry, I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread.

Here's the version I sing:

It's Not the Day (trad. I)

A fitful sleep the landlord had
The din and chat not of his choosing
His daughter `til the morning light
Abusing those who sat there boozing

CH: It's not the dawn, it's not the day
It's not late night or morning early
It's not the dawn of day at all
It's only now the moon is rising

Come landlord, join us in the snug
All drowsy thoughts of slumber scorning
There's not one drop in jar or jug
That we won't drain before the morning

There is the cock, I hear it crow
The morning comes, there's no more beer now
And though you don't have to go home
You know damn well you can't stay here now

This tavern has my socks and shoes
The landlord has my coat and britches
By morning I've no more to lose
And I'll go snooze among the ditches

I've money still to treat a friend
Here's my last guinea on the table
Let's tilt the barrel on its end
And let's be drinking while we're able

Pretty close to what Cathal of the Boys of the Lough sings on his latest solo album, with some changes by myself.

Cheers,
Michael

Jim Mageean sings a powerful version of this, worth catching.

Malcolm - the verse about "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here" is mine, being the chant of Charlie the bartender at the Plough & Stars in San Francisco, at closing time. (He would also frequently intone, "Raise yer glasses and move yer asses!" if the above encouragement did not produce satisfactory results.)

Cheers,
Michael

If anybody needs comments from Riggy on this song, send him an e-mail and ask him to drop by. His Website is worth a look - Click here.
On second thought, it was a good excuse to check in with him, so I sent him an e-mail.

How is or isn't this song related to Poc air buile? the Mad Buckgoat?

and it is interesting how many times similar threads appear, it seems like it is in the air, what someone is thinking of and trying to remember, there is another site today on There's the Day, should be linked , and then linked to all the other discussions there have been.

Bill K

Other than the fact they both have versions in Irish, and are both drinking songs with join in choruses, I can't see that there is any connection between Nil na La and An Poc ar Buile. The first one is about a mad goat going on a rampage through Kerry, the other is about people being refused drink in a pub because its too late.

The tunes are slightly similar in places, but thats where the connection ends.

There is a very big link with the Wild Rover - in fact in theme its almost exactly the same - Customer is refused drink until he shows a large amount of cash and is then welcome to spend the night drinking and ends up rueing the fact that he's drunk all the money.

Clannad turned a much faster Donegal version of Nil Na La into a 15 minute masterpiece complete with long flute and Bass solos back in the mid 70s.

I think the similarity in tune is somewhat important, obviously lyrics get added and changed, but P. W. Joyce #693 is titled 'It is not day, no, nor morning: A Drinking SOng, ALso called Poc Buille, or Poc air Buille, the Mad Buckgoat' can't do the notes, but obviously(?) at one time a dance tune, later given lyrics?

I don't get the connection with An Poc ar Buile unless it's just that we have two language variants. It is a translation of Níl sé na lá - which has a theme similar to the wild rover - and the English variant seems to have taken on a life of its own as we have varied lyrics. Unlike the Irish language versions, I've only heard the English to one tune as sung by Kevin Mitchell and Cathal McConnell. Kevin often sings the chorus in Irish. The tune is one that is commonly used for Níl sé 'na lá (though oddly not in the recordings I can think of) and I think Alison may have already supplied Mudcat with an abc of the tune???

Yes, the tune is at Mudcat MIDIs It's listed under "Nil Na La 1"; as I said above the Irish-language Níl 'na Lá several versions with varying tunes, including the one that is used for the English-language version.

"Nil" = "Nach bhfuil" = "Not is"

Nil na la = "It is not the day"
Tá na la = "It is the day"
Nil na lá = "It is not the day"
Tá ar maidin = It's the early morning.

Not Yet Day

The silver moon that shines so bright, I Swear with reason is my teacher
And if my midnight glass runs dry, their's time to drink another Pitcher

It's not yet day, it's not yet day, Why should we forsake good liquor
Until the sunbeams around us play, lets joke and push about the Pitcher

I dearly love a hearty man, no snickering milk soft jimmie twitchier
That loves a lass and loves a glass and loudly call for another Pitcher
Chorus
They say that we must work all day and sleep at night to wake much richer
But what is all the world does say, compared to Mirth my friend and Pitcher
Chours
Though one may boast a handsome wife, yet strange vaugres may bewitch her
Unvexed I'll lead a cheerful life, and loudly call for another Pitcher
Chorus
