Subject: going to New Orleans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Nov 00 - 03:40 PM The DH and I are going to New Orleans from December 6 - 10 (Wednesday through Sunday). Can anyone tell me of anyplace to go to hear enjoyable music? I like traditional, classical, Dixieland and ragtime. Don't like contemporary jazz. |

Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: Ship'scat Date: 16 Nov 00 - 03:00 AM Welcome (in advance) to the City that care forgot. I don't follow classical jazz that much but its here. WWOZ at http://www.wwoz.org/ is a good place to start. The radio station is an integral part of our Jazzfest (April/May). The Times Picayunne site might help locate something current. http://www.nolalive.com/entertainment/ There's a bit of folk and a bit of celtic but not much singing. Lots of Cajun and Zydeco dancing. Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: Murray MacLeod Date: 16 Nov 00 - 09:11 AM You could treat yourself or the DH (D=devoted?) to a guitar lesson with Martin Simpson while you're there. Murray |
Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: GUEST,Russ Date: 16 Nov 00 - 09:50 AM Two words: Music, Food (not necessarily in that order) Ship'scat's URLS are a good place to start, but beware! The quantity, quality, and variety of live music available in NOLA is bewildering. At least once, grab a go cup and take an evening stroll down Bourbon street. It is old, lewd, dirty, tacky as hell, touristy, and wonderful. The doors will be open and the music will be loud so you can spend an entire evening just sampling the musical smorgasbord. If you hear something you like, go on in, buy an overpriced Bud and enjoy for a while, then move on. Eat early, eat often, and eat to excess regularly. Forget about eating healthy for a day or two. The big name restaurants are truly world class, but you can pick a neighborhood restaurant you've never heard of at random and there is a good chance you will have one of the best meals of your life. |
Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: Gern Date: 16 Nov 00 - 09:58 AM Enjoy! There are plenty of places for music in the city, but here are two favorites. Preservation Hall is still around, so I am told, and is a simple setting with no alcolhol and benches for seating. I like Maisson Bourbon, which is on the corner of Bourbon and (I think) Toulouse Street. No cover, but outrageously priced drinks and a one drink per set minimum. Most folks don't stay long, so you can always get a seat. But I went there twice this year, and found quality hot jazz from a couple of different bands. All old-timers, all traditional songs. You might also run this question by the friendly folks at the Bourbon Street chatroom -- www.nola.com. And grab a bowl of Creole jambalaya at Papa Joe's, across the street. |
Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 16 Nov 00 - 10:40 AM Daft, Dear and Devoted - they all apply at different times. And when he plays softball, he always gets a hit, so I guess he could be a Designated Hitter under the right circ's. Thanks to all for the music tips. |
Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: Cobble Date: 16 Nov 00 - 01:28 PM The streets are full of music, the pavement artists are well worth a look and the sea food ( and alligator) is out of this world. Oh I forgot try an 'Hurricane' at Pat O'Brians bar. Mrs. C. |
Subject: RE: going to New Orleans From: pattyClink Date: 16 Nov 00 - 03:06 PM For heaven's sake don't miss O'Flaherty's. I think it's on Toulouse. Usually something live going on most evenings. Love the ballad room where they shoo you upstairs if you can't listen to the singers. And if you're on vacation from a structured life, the beauty of the place is you can just roam the Quarter streets and see what sounds come wafting out the doors. You might pass that place with the great piano bar just by happenstance. |
