High up overhead in the rafters, two chocolate eyes glow neltingly as they wake and survey the scene below.

"Sho' is comfubble an' warm up here" sez Sugar Dog to the others lurking aloft. "An' quiet. Peaceable, like. Almos' 's nice as dat Callahan's rafters. Bes' part is even a Sugar Dog Man cain't see up in de rafters lessen he done clumb up hisseff! It be good an' dark up heah-- dey cain't see up dis way fum down below! Let a body rest herseff, nice!"

Sugar Dog cock ear an' lissen, hear somebuddy say her name, look out a crack in de siding, see flagpole. "Uh huh" she think; "Them knickers is looking a might frazzly... dat ole Pennsyltucky windstorm ripwhip 'em all shreddy."

Sugar Dog slitter out de crack, shinny down a drainpipe butt down an' nose up, an' trit-trot over de flagpole. "Ah reckon these fit fer a lil Sugar Dog bed, now" sez she, and back up de pipe she go, mouf all fulla knickertatters. In de crack she slitter back, an' take up her place on de rafter. She curl up, fittin' tuh 'sleep, knickers soft under-- and soft over, too, wrap on her head for nice dark nap.

Sugar Dog musin' as she drif' off, fo' she start dream a lil candycane chase.... "Huh, reckon that Peter T know dis jes been the fust day in Christmastide? Dat MAH-sheen loaded fer all twelve day? Sugar Dog give a lil shake an' settle for long sleep.

A few caramel hairs float down, perhaps to tickle a well-tuned nose or two.

The old man awoke from his vivid dream in a small shed in the alley.Outside, the last of the Christmas snow was steaming away beneath a bright sun.He arose and walked out into Tiple Street, and he saw a line forming in front of the homeless shelter there, waiting for hot coffee and donuts.Plodding through the slush,he passed the front door of the Mudcat Cafe, and paused.Just for a moment,he saw the young man staring back at him,the young eyes super-imposed on his world-weary ones, and did he see her reflection in the glass, standing smiling at his shoulder? But he turned, and the street around him was empty, people taking the usual care to give the homeless man a wide berth. He looked back to the glass, the image dissolving as the door opened.

Bleary-eyed,LEJ still managed a smile."No liquor, yet,my friend, but I can offer you some coffee and left-over Christmas ham,"said the bartender. The old man entered the now familiar tavern, noticing that all of the candles save two had been snuffed. These two gave a bright glow to their little corner, and the old man said "why do you keep those two burning?" The bartender smiled and said "one is for a child, and one for an angel, and we will keep both lit as long as this place stands." And as the old man sat down to his meal,he wondered that his life, which had felt like an old watch winding down, had suddenly taken on the feel of a new adventure which was opening to him.

Don't look in the rafters! Great big sugar dog up there, drooling all over a ratty pair of knickers........musta stole 'em off the flagpole. HEY! It weren't me put the holly in the jello pit--I just put in some mistletoe to make it more fun......

See the candles, my friend? Hoist your glass, whatever you have, and join me in a toast......

To Patrick and Brendan, wherever they both may be.....Patrick safe at Home, and Brendan safe in his Daddy's arms. Live long, and prosper, my friends.

Set up the house, there, bartender, whatever they will have. L'chiam!!

and in the back, the fiddler is softly playing an Irish lullaby...........sleep well, my friends, sleep well.

I think I saw Sugar Dog (who is only about the size of a cocker spaniel, although of course when an old bat tries too hard to peer up in the rafters where she oughtta not be lookin', things do appear much larger)

.... saw Sugar Dog hop down from the rafters and take up a spot near the door, hoping to tag along on a LEJventure. He's a Sugar Dog Man you know.

She could learn a lot AND keep his feet warm.

Deja vu. My favourite view. I never even noticed the date on this.

The ground shook as the Tree strode majestically into town. A startled dog yelped and ran to hide from possible retribution, but apart from that not a soul saw the Tree, as it moved through the streets, past the little houses, shining with their Christmas lights, into the centre of the little township - until at last it settled itself down contentedly outside the Mudcat Inn.

Forty foot high, dark green needles festooned with snow, rising to a point high above the roof of the Inn, from which could be heard the raucous sound of singing interspersed with the occasional bellow of indignation as the talk turned to matters of perennial dispute.

The door opened, and a group of revellers emerged. The tree shivered, and a great mass of snow slid from the tree, and nearly buried the group. And for the first time they saw the Tree.
