Subject: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Uncle Jaque Date: 27 Dec 00 - 11:41 PM Just got in from one of the most therapeautic dosages of fun therapy administered in a long time - the informal Chantey-Jam at the China Seas Chandelry and Nautical Antiques Shop in Portland, ME. This event, as noted in a previous thread, was co-hosted by Capt. Steve Bunker and Sharon Bondhoff, with a musical nucleus provided by Charlie Ipcar and the Roll-and-Go Crew, including our very own "Naemanson". The distinct pleasure of meeting several fellow Mudcatters was celebrated, and considerable talent and virtuosity was evident in abundance. Among celebreties present was the ever-popular and frequently hilarious Kendall, who shared many a fine tune, including the legendary "I don't look good Naked Anymore" which about had all hands rolling on the deck! I now feel like an offically initiated Mudcatter, having partaken of some of Sinsulls' proverbial bourbon-balls... sort of like a folkie's Communion, it seems. Aahh; Ambrosia! They go quite well with Guinness, by the way! Naemanson saw to it that a Mudcatter's group photo-op was taken before we parted company - although I think we missed a few earlier deserters. It should be up on the gallery before long. All hope to do this again, perhaps a couple of more times over the Winter. Naem speculates that a potential site might be up his way in Bath, and we could probably host a fair-sized group at the Clarke Quarters here in Yarmouth if we moved some furniture in the parlor around a bit. Good time had by all, Mates! I hope all "Catters have a chance to get together like this regionally all over the civilized World. As nifty as this cyber-space Community is, it's only a marginal substitute for real-time real-world personal interaction, eh? Ya gotta love it! |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Dec 00 - 12:13 AM And no one whipped out their S&W huh Unc? sounds like a real drag.........but I'll be anxious to see the pix anyway. Spaw |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: wysiwyg Date: 28 Dec 00 - 12:47 AM I love it that NAEMANSON now becomes NAEM. Crap! WHT didn't I make a bundle earlier in life so I could RETIRE NOW and spend all my time going from gathering to gathering???? Hmmm... Hardi retires at the end of the decade.... I have to make a lotta bucks, we'll need a Winnebago... get me a big floppy old lady hat... ~S~ |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Uncle Jaque Date: 28 Dec 00 - 08:39 PM Catspaw49: It may be comforting for you to know, as I sincerely hope it will be, that about all the "Iron" I was packing last night at the sing was my pint tin "mucket" and a Clarke "C" tin whistle. I had full intentions of enjoying a couple of Guiness stouts from said mucket, which I did with great relish - and I have this quirky personal policy; When under arms I refrain from consumption of alchoholic beverages (I do NOT "do" "recreational" drugs), and when enjoying adult beverages, I do so disarmed, leaving the defence of self and company in the hands of Angels. You might find it incredulous to consider that an insensitive roughian such as I would allow a defference to anticipated companys' personal feelings and concerns about armed Citizens' in their midst, even though these sensitivities might be at variance with my own opinions, to also be a factor in my departure from otherwise routine procedure. Perhaps it was. If anyone "whipped out" a Short & Weak, or a Slick & Wet, or any other sort of "S&W" as you allude, it was done with sufficient discretion as to completely avoid my perception thereof. About the only presentations of anything even remotely offensive, were the few political cracks... none, as I recall, from me. Despite lack of Spousal supervision, I think I was able to restrain myself pretty well, even resisting the temptation to respond to one particularly off-color "poem" about Presidential bedroom activities involving "Nancy". Somehow, when "alternative sex acts" in the White House are being discussed, "Nancy" is NOT the first name which comes to my mind... but I digress. Besides, being outnumbered about 27 to 1 (if there were any other Conservatives there, I was not aware of them, and felt pretty safe in assuming the absence thereof). Discretion being what it is to valor, it seemed wise to leave my politics in the bottom of the old guitar case (as I had left my trusty .45 secured at Quarters) for the duration. I rather wish that others had done the same. With the politics, anyway. If anyone was packing that "S&W", they were cool. Now, if you can handle this: there was not one participant on deck last night, "politics", lifestyle, "orientation" or other human distinctives nonwithstanding, whom I did not genuinely and sincerely desire to like, respect, and get along with. I surely do love singin' with each and every one! |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: kendall Date: 28 Dec 00 - 10:26 PM The great thing about a S&W short barrel .38 is that no one knows you have it.. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Barry Finn Date: 28 Dec 00 - 10:37 PM Ah, it was a great time, & meeting with Uncle Jaque was a pleasure, as it was to hear him. I guess I got there around the start-4pm & it didn't break down till about 10:30. The singing was pretty constant except during the pizza feeding frenzy. The hour & a half drive home was a breeze after an evening like this. It was nice to meet up with Willie-O too who'd come down from the cold country to spend some time in the warmer pleasant climes & sing us a great rendition of Canada-I-O. The shop couldn't have been more apropos with all the ship's chests & lockers for seats & benches & a good size skiff for a table & hosts that were by & fore the most gracious salt water creatures that you could ever hope to school with. The singing & the songs were to die for & Naemanson & his Roll & Go crew were great, not only with their songs but with their personalities & their keeping the session on course. Jeri was her usual good self & in grand form & Kendall was his usual self, loaded down to the gunnels with some great songs, sung as only he could do them (senior moments & all, he,he,smile). It's always nice to see Sinsull but damn don't bring those yummy bourbon balls around anymore, after just one I was gonna run the mile in record time then save the world after I'd slowed down a bit. Anyway, I had a great time & I hope this happens agin, soon. Barry |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Dec 00 - 10:39 PM Kinda' like your genitals Kendall. Remarkable similarities I'd say. Uncle Jacque, its good to know you can take it because we love to kid folks around here. And I have to admit that I don't think of Nancy when I think of sex in the White House either. Sadly though, she was recently dropped from the Outpatient Services Group at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed where she was undergoing therapy in the new wing housing the "James Taylor Rehabilitation Clinic for Catatonic Blandness." Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: GUEST,Thom M. at work Date: 29 Dec 00 - 03:15 AM It really was a great time. This being my first visit to such an event I was a little reluctant to join in but everyone there was so great and made me feel so welcome that I soon got into the spirit of things. I promise next time Capt. Bunker I will remember all the words to "The Men Behind the Guns" Looking forward to many more such events and hope that any weekly sings going on in the southern Maine and New Hampshire areas will be posted here on the Cat. Thanks again Thom M. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: kendall Date: 29 Dec 00 - 11:25 AM This is Sinsull again. Thom, if you felt awkward it didn't show. I thought you were part of Roll and Go until Naemanson pointed you out as a new Mudcatter.Have to admit, staunch Liberal and Nancy-basher that I am, I didn't get the Nancy joke. And Barry - now I understand the extra twinkle in those beautiful, blue eyes. Was it the sugar rush or the bourbon? |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Willie-O Date: 30 Dec 00 - 02:44 AM Nancy...something to do with Frank Sinatra as i vaguely recall(?). But Never Mind That. I had a great time meeting and singin with you all. Thanks Brett for making me welcome, and putting me up. Looking forward to the Roll & Go CD release. I was struck by the high level of artistry present. Despite my landlubberly interest in shanties and other trad vocal styles, I don't hang out with folks that sing the real stuff (as in, slow, loud and acapulco with much chorusing) much, it's a treat to get in a room with a bunch of devotees as yourselves... As with all Mudcat encounters to date, I'm real glad I went. Now I'm back home in Ontario, shovelling snow and stoking the stove... Fraternally yrs |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:23 AM You know, it's funny. I went to this thing prepared to say that we didn't have to focus on sea music, that we could let the music slip ashore. And, a few times we did. But I didn't think there would be enough people who could keep that music going through the whole evening. Well, as it turned out, for those who weren't there, the focus largely stayed on sea music. The few shore visits were welcomed, enjoyed, and then we went back to sea. The music was mostly chorus music that all could enjoy but no one spurned the occasional song without a chorus. All in all it was a lovely evening and a real spark to anyone's interest in this music. And we had a couple of people who were there only because they love music and were friends of the host. They were (Dare I say it?) rock musicians! They had not previously been exposed to sea chanties and unaccompanied voices singing folk music. When there were tunes being played they played along as best they could without knowing the actual tune. They are good musicians but had not seen anything like that evening before. They even contributed Sloop John B and Jamaica Farewell. They seemed to have a great time and were among the last of us to leave the place. I hope we've helped them expand their musical interests. I would expect to see them at future gatherings and wouldn't be surprised to find them lurking here. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Jeri Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:13 AM They had a good feel for what was going on and knew how to contribute. I only met one of them (I think) - the cute guy with the bass. Perhaps the pretty lady with the pretty voice who did "Southern Cross" was the other? They were very nice people, and I do hope they keep coming if Capt Bunker keeps this going. Let's face it, some folks try to get an entire group to play by their rules. (I've not met very many of those folks.) Others know that's futile and frustrating, and are pretty adept at finding ways to contribute rather than fight. Everyone who was there was of the latter variety. Willie-O, it was great to hear you, but it just dawned on me that I never said "hello" all night! Hello! Nice to meet you! (Same goes for everyone else I didn't say that to.) |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Uncle Jaque Date: 31 Dec 00 - 01:10 AM The fellow with the bass (he and the pettite little Lady "Elizabeth" seemed to swap off between the bull-fiddle and a heavily autographed flat-top guitar pretty much all night) is "Glenn" from Portland. He moves, restores, and sells used pianos and organs for a living. They did seem a little out of their usual element but adapted well and contributed significantly and skillfully, I believe. A very personable couple, as well - hope to have 'em on board the old Mudcat as well as at the next singalong. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 31 Dec 00 - 09:17 AM Well we certainly did plenty of advertising for the old 'Cat that night. I wouldn't be surprised to find several more members coming out of that evening. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: paddymac Date: 31 Dec 00 - 10:15 AM Why not pack up "the show" for a southern roadtrip? It sounds like the kind of evening that should be shared with willing souls thw world over. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Ribbit Date: 31 Dec 00 - 10:48 AM Paddy, That's a wonderful idea. I for one would be glad to take part in such an undertaking. all the best for the new year. Thom M. |

Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Willie-O Date: 01 Jan 01 - 07:10 PM HEY NAEMANSON!!!!! Can you post a link to the Roll N Go web page? I want to hear your mp3's. I find that the song that stuck in my head as a must -learn was that thar "Yangtze River". Where can I get the lyrics? (Was that Thom M that sang it?) Bill |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 01 Jan 01 - 07:17 PM Willie-o, Dick sang it and Charlie and Eli played banjo and guitar for it. I'll have to get the lyrics and other info from Charlie. He's the one who found it. Let me look around. I might even have it in one of my notebooks. I'll post it here. Unfortunately we do not have that one recorded. We concentrated on recording the unaccompanied stuff first. Yangtze River is on the next lst for the CD but we are out of $$$ so it will be a while before we earn enough for the next recording session. Kendall, have a good time down south. Drive careful! |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Jeri Date: 01 Jan 01 - 07:34 PM Roll & Go's Website Barry Finn sang the Yangtze River one, methinks. "Was you ever down the Yangtze River, blow, boys, blow?" |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Barry Finn Date: 01 Jan 01 - 09:29 PM Nope, sang a few things but not that one, though I wouldn't mind learning it, it was a dandy. I thought it was Kendall who did that one???? Barry |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: kendall Date: 01 Jan 01 - 10:01 PM I learned it as CONGO river |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Ribbit Date: 01 Jan 01 - 10:27 PM Will this help?
Oh was you ever on the Congo River |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Willie-O Date: 02 Jan 01 - 05:26 AM I've heard Tom Lewis sing that. It is not the song I'm referring to--diffferent words, different chorus, different melody. But thanks. W-O |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Jan 01 - 05:50 AM Not the one I'm thinking of either. Barry |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Uncle Jaque Date: 02 Jan 01 - 02:40 PM Road show appeals to me - if I qualify! Keep us posted! |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: kendall Date: 02 Jan 01 - 03:36 PM Qualify? Are there qualifications? SINSULL |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 01 - 05:02 PM I started that mess with the wrong river. Of course I was thinking about Congo. Sorry. (she said sheepishly.) |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Jan 01 - 08:16 PM Hi Jeri, I do sing that Congo River one but I don't think I did it that night maybe I did a fast rowing shanty, "Hell Of A Wedding On The Congo River":
What a hell of a wedding on the Congo River
Would that be the one you were thinking of? Still I liked that Yangtze River one but I don't remember who did it. Barry |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 01 - 08:50 PM That's the one you do that I thought of. Turns out I have the one Thom M. posted the lyrics to on a CD in the car. (Salt of the Earth) |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Peter Kasin Date: 03 Jan 01 - 08:43 PM Sounds like some unusual sea songs were sung. Did anyone tape this session? A potential Mudcat tape, maybe? |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 03 Jan 01 - 10:56 PM Sorry but no tape was made. One or two pictures were taken and will be made avaible if those photographed cannot come up with a high enough price. And on a humorous note, what is the definition of unusual songs? I'm sure each of us considered the songs we did as being in the normal range. Maybe we can creep this thread into a definition of unusual. Then we can bash the conservatives and then begin to schmooze the single Mudwomen... Just kidding, of course. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Tinker Date: 04 Jan 01 - 11:42 AM Let's see it's only thirteen and a half years til the youngest leaves for college and we can roam the world again..... This sounds like it was a great time... I'll be up at Cresent Lake the last two weeks in August, any chance of some local activity?? I've been diligently learning sea songs since Getaway... you all just had too much fun not to want to join in.... Tinker |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 04 Jan 01 - 01:27 PM Where is Crescent Lake, Tinker? I am in Bath, Maine, on the coast but can tune you in to local activity for most of the state. |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Tinker Date: 04 Jan 01 - 10:48 PM It's not far from Portland. We're actually in Raymond. Cresent is one of the little lakes east of Sebago. We did several day trips into Portland last summer when we were up for a week, and the kids loved it so much we're doing two weeks this year. I got to meet Barry and Jeri at Getaway, but seems like I might get to meet a few more now that were gonna set a spell in Maine. New Jersey is just too hot for summer. I pulled out an atlas and Bath looks to be about 2 hours away?? not bad at all. Tinker |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Willie-O Date: 05 Jan 01 - 10:10 PM So are these Yangzte River lyrics going to turn up? My memory is fading fast, but this ain't exactly a search into the mists of antiquity...we're still talking last week (barely)... Willie-O |
Subject: RE: PortlandME ChanteyJam;AfterActionRept From: Naemanson Date: 05 Jan 01 - 11:17 PM OK, OK, sheesh! It's only been a week. By my calculations I have another 51 weeks before I'm late with it. Blame it on Diablo II! *BG* Here are the words to the Yangtse River Shanty. According to the notes on Charlie's sheet it was written by Hamish Maclaren in 1930. charlie gave it the tune (Tommy's Gone To Hilo adapted to fit).
