Subject: RE: Origins: Les Cloches du Hameau From: Monique Date: 16 Feb 21 - 03:29 AM About the lyrics: I fixed the translation of "chalumeau" which isn't a bell but a reed pipe. On Library and Archives Canada you'll find more "technical" background and a 1941 recording. |
Subject: RE: Help: Les Cloches du Hameau From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 15 Feb 21 - 06:41 PM Countless websites perpetuate the wrong, false, erroneous, phoney, and mistaken attribution of this tune to Brahms; it seems to predate the Internet. Many interactions between that composer and folklore are known, in both directions, but serious researchers will always mention an opus number. |
Subject: RE: Help: Les Cloches du Hameau From: leeneia Date: 15 Feb 21 - 10:45 AM Thank you, Monique, for the information and the sheet music. I believe I'll add this lovely song to my repertoire. |
Subject: RE: Help: Les Cloches du Hameau From: Monique Date: 15 Feb 21 - 01:41 AM On this blog you'll see a sheet music, a YouTube video and some background information in French. The song is said to be written and composed by Albert Larrieu (Perpignan 1872- Paris 1925) -though not registered at the BNF. Larrieu spent some time in Canada and the song was collected by the French-Canadian priest and musicologist Charles-Émile Gadbois (1906-1981) in one of his "La Bonne Chanson" collection (1938-1951). It was also published in a 1957 school songbook "Chantons la bonne chanson à l’école". |
Subject: ADD: Les cloches du hameau From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Feb 21 - 11:15 PM Here are the lyrics from one of "those" sites - With corrections by Monique
Source: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/celinedion/lesclochesduhameau.html (corrected by Monique) I've seen attributions to Brahms for the melody, that doesn't seem credible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDsv-dBpLhM |

Subject: RE: Help: Les Cloches du Hameau From: Haruo Date: 30 Dec 00 - 07:14 PM Die Glocken des kleinen Dorfes, according to Babelfish. However I think it likely that only the tune, not the text, is being ascribed to Brahms. Liland |

Subject: RE: Is this a French-Canadian Folk song? From: Musicman Date: 06 Jan 99 - 01:10 AM Rosie, I finally got this translation from a friend of mine who is french-canadian. She appologizes for the delay. Hope it is of some use to you still paul Here it goes: The bells of the hamlet Sing in the countryside The sound of the pipe (shepherd's wind instrument, unsure of correct english word) Wakes up the mountains Refrain: We hear, We hear The shepherds, The Shepherds Singing in the prairies Those light refrains that charm their girlfriends... Tra la la...etc 2) It is time to go home And the young shepherdess Seing the end of the day Returns to her cottage 3) When in the rock (mountains) The storm strikes Around the old homestead We sing joyously So there it is, it is an old french canadian song that takes me back to my childhood.. I could sing it for you but of course I'd have to be in the shower... |
Subject: RE: Is this a French-Canadian Folk song? From: codriscoll@videotron.ca Date: 26 Dec 98 - 01:18 PM Rosie, The song is actually sung on the album by Céline and her whole family. The English translation is "Church Bells are Ringing". I have a videotape of Céline and her family singing this song on the Oprah Winfry Show. René Angelil actually tells Oprah that this is the translation. I'm not sure if this song is sung in French Canadian homes, but I can find out for you if you want. Just let me know. Chantelle |
Subject: RE: Is this a French-Canadian Folk song? From: Rosie Date: 26 Dec 98 - 01:14 PM Funny thing, this world-wide web. One week numerous searches produce nothing. Next week - VOILA! For anyone else interested in the lyrics to this pretty old song go to this site: www.english.celine-dion.net/disco/paroles/xmas_a.htm#16 My query has been answered. Thanks to all, Rosie |
Subject: RE: Is this a French-Canadian Folk song? From: Jack Hickman Date: 25 Dec 98 - 12:12 PM Rosie: The title translates as "The Bells of Hameau." Though I'm not Quebecois, I would guess that Hameau is not a place name in Quebec, but likely in France. If so, It is likely a real old French song which came over with the original French immigrants in the 1600's. Sorry I can't be of more help, but the above could be a start. Subject: Is this a French-Canadian Folk song? From: Rosie Date: 23 Dec 98 - 11:17 PM Re-post of my original query of 12/20 with a different thread title (hoping it catches someone's eye). I'm still looking for information about this song titled "Les Cloches du Hameau" on Celine Dion's Christmas CD called "These Are Special Times". I've had numerous WWW "hits" when requesting info on this song but they usually turn out to be Celine fan club sites, or places to purchse the CD. Alas, I understand not a single French word and cannot imagine what this song is about, but it is a very lovely piece. Thanks to all, Rosie

Subject: Les Cloches Du Hameau: Info please From: Rosie Date: 20 Dec 98 - 11:42 PM This track is on Celine Dion's Christmas CD "These Are Special Times". Is this a French-Canadian favorite? Is there a site where I can get the lyrics in English? The song is enchanting...very sweetly performed by Celine and her family. Thanks to all, Rosie |
