The song starts out: The icecaps are melting, the tide is rushing in...... and that's all i remember of it. It used to be played over Radio KPFK (Pacifica station in El Ay, back in the swingin' 60s.

Actually it's a good thing they're melting. 10,000 years ago, my house was under hundreds of feet of ice, and we're thousands of miles from the North Pole.

On second thought, 10,000 years ago my house didn't exist yet, as it was only built in 1965.

But the ice cap was MUCH larger then.

Oh blimey - I thought it was another bad news thread! I hadn't noticed the Lyr Req bit. Phew!!!
Don't know a 60s song - but it's similar to a bit of London Calling by the Clash (The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in, engines stop running and the wheat is growing thing etc..... the whole song ).
I know that's not a lot of good to you - but I just wonder whether the Clash song was conciously echoing an earlier song??

I don't suppose anybody would make up a song about ice cubes melting in a glass of water because, of course, the water level eventually drops slightly (Ice occupying more space than its equivalence in water, which is why ice floats). Since the polar ice cap is floating on the water, which is why submarines sail under it all the time, if the polar ice cap melts, we should actually have lower tides not higher ones. Maybe they were thinking about glaciers...

But oh, that's right, this was heard on Radio Pacifica in LA in the 70's... scene of some of our best higher order thinking. Do you think they smoked too many joints without their helmets? Not enough? Would they have been closer to reality by scoring Johnny Walker Red?

Truth be told, I wish you well, I'd love to see the words myself, with the chords, if possible. I could sit back and sing it while watching muted reruns of "On the Beach".

can't find any lyrics - but there is an instrumental by sam bush. the trick was to search on "ice caps are melting" not "icecaps are melting" maybe it is actually icecap? or ice cap? will try those next.

Hmmm. Time for a new dictionary, Claymore. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary (http://www.m-w.com) defines it thus:

Function: noun
Date: circa 1860
1 : an ice bag shaped to the head
2 : a cover of perennial ice and snow; specifically : a glacier forming on an extensive area of relatively level land and flowing outward from its center

Of course you realize that when people say "ice caps" they are using it as shorthand for "polar ice caps" -- of which there are two, a floater at the top, and a land-based one at the bottom.

When we talk about them melting, we're talking about DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING TRENDS. Which would tend to melt both of 'em, not just the floater.

I would have thought all this was pretty obvious but there I go assuming again.

Just in case anyone is misled, this is NOT TRUE, the water level will NOT change! The VOLUME of water displaced by the ice is the same as the VOLUME that the ice will occupy when it melts.

if u put ice in a glass with water, whats going to happen the ice is going to melt and the glass is going to run over with water, same as the ice caps when thay melt it has to go somewhere, and where would that be. Huh, lets think about it the ocean gets more water in it, whats going to happen?
