Subject: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 14 Mar 01 - 11:29 AM This from a friend who seeks our help: The song starts out: The icecaps are melting, the tide is rushing in...... and that's all i remember of it. It used to be played over Radio KPFK (Pacifica station in El Ay, back in the swingin' 60s. Thanks everybody! Alex |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 01 - 01:56 PM Probably pretty old. They started melting about 10,000 years ago. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 14 Mar 01 - 01:59 PM Yes but it's possible to write new songs about old geological events. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 01 - 02:02 PM But with no old records of eyewitness accounts, they're all lies. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: MMario Date: 14 Mar 01 - 02:03 PM but they haven't finished melting - so the song is basically current events.... and the tide rushes in twice a day on most coastlines... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 14 Mar 01 - 02:30 PM I don't care if it's lies. Does anybody know the $*ing song?!?!?!?! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 14 Mar 01 - 02:43 PM Actually it's a good thing they're melting. 10,000 years ago, my house was under hundreds of feet of ice, and we're thousands of miles from the North Pole. On second thought, 10,000 years ago my house didn't exist yet, as it was only built in 1965. But the ice cap was MUCH larger then. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: KingBrilliant Date: 14 Mar 01 - 02:49 PM Oh blimey - I thought it was another bad news thread! I hadn't noticed the Lyr Req bit. Phew!!! Don't know a 60s song - but it's similar to a bit of London Calling by the Clash (The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in, engines stop running and the wheat is growing thing etc..... the whole song ). I know that's not a lot of good to you - but I just wonder whether the Clash song was conciously echoing an earlier song?? Kris |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: MMario Date: 14 Mar 01 - 03:20 PM I couldn't find anything on a google search... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 01 - 04:21 PM I think it may have been a recording by Tiny Tim. Don't have any more information at the moment. Jack McC |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST,Claymore Date: 14 Mar 01 - 05:00 PM I don't suppose anybody would make up a song about ice cubes melting in a glass of water because, of course, the water level eventually drops slightly (Ice occupying more space than its equivalence in water, which is why ice floats). Since the polar ice cap is floating on the water, which is why submarines sail under it all the time, if the polar ice cap melts, we should actually have lower tides not higher ones. Maybe they were thinking about glaciers... But oh, that's right, this was heard on Radio Pacifica in LA in the 70's... scene of some of our best higher order thinking. Do you think they smoked too many joints without their helmets? Not enough? Would they have been closer to reality by scoring Johnny Walker Red? Truth be told, I wish you well, I'd love to see the words myself, with the chords, if possible. I could sit back and sing it while watching muted reruns of "On the Beach". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 14 Mar 01 - 05:01 PM Um, the polar ice cap in the SOUTH hemisphere is on land, genius. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 15 Mar 01 - 12:30 PM Don't NOBODY know this song? Really? I boasted to my friend Jim (who wishes to know about the song) that you guys could find ANYTHING. I'm so disappointed. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: MMario Date: 15 Mar 01 - 01:42 PM can't find any lyrics - but there is an instrumental by sam bush. the trick was to search on "ice caps are melting" not "icecaps are melting" maybe it is actually icecap? or ice cap? will try those next. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST,Claymore Date: 15 Mar 01 - 04:12 PM mousethief: Um, my Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary defines the word "ice cap" as "a large contiguous FLOATING expanse of ice." The South Pole is a CONTINENT called ANTARTICA covered by a GLACIER (actually several of them). I believe the last line of the first paragraph of my post was "Maybe they were thinking about GLACIERS..." (Caps Mine) Perhaps I should have written is a less abbreviated format. /signed/ "genius" (if you insist, but I do ever so much like "Claymore" best). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: mousethief Date: 15 Mar 01 - 04:21 PM Hmmm. Time for a new dictionary, Claymore. The Merriam-Webster online dictionary (http://www.m-w.com) defines it thus:
Main Entry: ice cap Of course you realize that when people say "ice caps" they are using it as shorthand for "polar ice caps" -- of which there are two, a floater at the top, and a land-based one at the bottom. When we talk about them melting, we're talking about DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING TRENDS. Which would tend to melt both of 'em, not just the floater. I would have thought all this was pretty obvious but there I go assuming again. Alex |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: Amos Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:01 PM Tiny Tim did it -- "The ice caps are melting -- tralala-- all the world is drowning -- tralala". The VOLUME of water displaced by the ice is the same as the VOLUME that the ice will occupy when it melts. (Ask Archimedes - Oh, you can't, he's dead) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: GUEST Date: 15 Apr 09 - 05:56 AM if u put ice in a glass with water, whats going to happen the ice is going to melt and the glass is going to run over with water, same as the ice caps when thay melt it has to go somewhere, and where would that be. Huh, lets think about it the ocean gets more water in it, whats going to happen? If ya,ll can,t figure it out i hope u dont live near the ocean or below sea level, A country boy posted this with a 10th grade education, thks |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Icecaps are melting From: Peace Date: 05 May 09 - 08:20 PM Title: Tiny Tim - "Stay Down Here Where You Belong" Artist: Tiny Tim Lyrics Down below, down below Caught the devil talking to his son Who wanted to go up above, up above He cried, "It's getting to warm for me down here and so, I'm going up to Earth where I can have a little fun." The devil slowly smiled and then he answered his son The ice caps are melting; the tide is rushing in. All the world must drown soon to wash away the sin. "Stay down here where you belong The folks who live above you don't know right from wrong To please their king, they've all gone out to war And not one of them knows what he's fighting for Way up above they say that I'm a devil and I'm bad Kings up there are bigger devils than your dad Breaking the hearts of mothers, making butchers of their brothers You'll find more heat up there than there is down below" "Kings up there, they don't care For the mothers who must stay at home, their troubles to bear Stay at home, don't you roam Although it's warm down here, it's warmer up there If you go way up there, my son, I know you'll be surprised You'll find a lot of people who are not civilized" The ice caps are melting; the tide is rushing in. All the world must drown soon to wash away the sin. "Stay down here where you belong The folks who live above you don't know right from wrong To please their king, they've all gone out to war And not one of them knows what he's fighting for Way up above they say that I'm a devil and I'm bad Kings up there are bigger devils than your dad Breaking the hearts of mothers, making butchers of their brothers You'll find more heat up there than there is down below" Never hit your grandma with a shovel, It makes a bad impression on her mind! The ice caps are melting; the tide is rushing in. All the world must drown soon to wash away the sin. |

Subject: Lyr Add: STAY DOWN HERE WHERE YOU BELONG (Berlin) From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 May 09 - 11:39 PM Tiny Tim sang it, but Irving Berlin wrote it—most of it, anyway. It looks like Tiny Tim added a few lines about ice caps and not hitting your grandma with a shovel. Sheet music can be seen at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music: STAY DOWN HERE WHERE YOU BELONG Irving Berlin New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder, 1914. 1. Down below, down below Sat the devil talking to his son who wanted to go Up above, up above. He cried, "It's getting too warm for me down here and so, I'm going up on Earth where I can have a little fun." The Devil simply shook his head and answered his son: CHORUS: "Stay down here where you belong. The folks who live above you don't know right from wrong. To please their kings, they've all gone out to war, And not a one of them knows what he's fighting for. 'Way up above they say that I'm a Devil and I'm bad. Kings up there are bigger Devils than your dad. They're breaking the hearts of mothers, Making butchers out of brothers. You'll find more hell up there than there is down below." 2. "Kings up there, they don't care For the mothers who must stay at home, their troubles to bear. Stay at home. don't you roam. Although it's warm down below, you'll find it's warmer up there. If e'er you went up there, my son, I know you'd be surprised. You'd find a lot of people who are not civilized." |
