Alice Hawthorne is credited with lyrics and music to "Mockingbird" see here.

Tony Pastor's "Irish Volunteer" (c 1860?) is on the Bodley Ballads website. On Tony Pastor see my post on the recent Irish Rover thread.

Pastor's "Irish Volunteer" isn't on the Levy collection website. Both text and tune of his "Lanigan's Ball", 1863, are there.

It's also on a great CD my dad sent me called "The Irish Volunteer," by David Kincaid.

I love the song, although I confess one line does grate on me: "I was born among old Erin's bogs when I was but a child." Grrrr. I know it's anal of me, but writing a redundancy into a line just to serve the rhyme is a pet peeve of mine.

Other than that, though, I love it! :)

Two things about "The Irish Volunteer." First, the line, "I was born among old Erin's bogs when I was but a child" is a joke. Second, I was having a conversation with Mick Moloney a few months back and he did a fast calculation. If the line, "My father died in '98 for Liberty" was true, then the fictional Tim McDonald would've been a minimum of 63 years old at the outbreak of the Civil War... not prime material for the "good ould 69th."

"Alice Hawthorne" is a pseudo for Septimus Winter, an old Black minstrel man.

I am not PRIVY to whether cross-dressing was involved.
