Tune Req: Goosú Wa.é (trad Tlingit)

I just put the lyrics to four Tlingit-language songs on my website. Three use well-known-outside-Tlingitdom tunes (London Bridge, Twinkle Twinkle & Santa Claus is coming to town) that I had no trouble finding MIDIs for; the fourth, however, Goosú Wa.é (hope I remembered the spelling and URL!), is a traditional Tlingit tune. Anybody know of a publicly-accessible source for its tune, preferably in MIDI format?

The Library of Congress Folklore reading room has songs of many Indian tribes. These are mostly bound copies of Master's and Ph. D. theses that were never published.

Liland, just curious: where did you learn Tlingit? Tlingits are the largest Indian tribe here in Juneau. (We also have Athabascan, Haida, Tshimpshian, and the occasional Eskimo peoples)

A few years ago, the Tlingit were in danger of losing their language, I understand, but there are now after-school classes for young'uns on up. There is now an evident proud heritage and a vital culture. If you want to see and hear something moving and impressive all 'round, attend one of their celebrations!

Liland, I went to the Library of Congress Search the Catalogue site and typed in "Tlingit folk songs" and over 1000 records came up; not all relevant from the looks of it, but I saw several which listed sound recordings. It may be worth your while checking through there.

Ebbie, my Tlingit (what little there is) is all book-larnt, from the third edition of Beginning Tlingit checked out of the Seattle Public Library (and from a couple other library books etc. with parallel texts). My main indigenous languages (and I'm not all that good in either of them) are Chinuk Wawa [Chinook Jargon] and dx^wlEšucid [Lushootseed, aka Puget Sound Salish], which I study on the theory that if you're going to move to a new country you really ought to learn the language.

gaelicconquest, Tlingit is the main indigenous language of SE Alaska; it's Na-Dene. The Esperanto translation is on the right. More later, I'm about to run out of time on the library computer.

Thanks, Ebbie, we've got Tlingits down here in Seattle! Though I've never met one here who was fluent in the language. But the hope that such might come to exist is, I'm sure, the reason the Seattle Public Library stocks so many Tlingit materials (they have multiple copies of the textbook, which comes with tapes; the fourth edition, which I haven't seen yet, is on CDs). I just wish the SPL would be equally supportive of Lushootseed, which is in worse shape speaking-community-wise than Tlingit, as well as being more "Seattle".

FYI, the other Tlingit books I've seen from SPL are Haa Tuwunáagu Yís | for Healing our Spirit: Tlingit Oratory and Haa Ksteeyí | Our Culture : Tlingit Life Stories, both edited by Nora Marks Dauenhauer and Richard Dauenhauer.

Richard Dauenhauer, married to Nora, who is Tlingit, is an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker whom I've heard several times. They live in Juneau.
