From: Mark Clark Date: 05 Apr 01 - 01:33 PM Clinton, If your tuning makes an open chord such as the ones you mention you can find a lot of them on your own pretty easily. Of course you have fourteen right off the bat just by barring the fretts betewen the nut and the body of the guitar. From there you can add 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, flat the 3rd, 5th, etc. This will get you quite a good number of chords. When you're comfortable with scales in a tuning, you can start playing with chord fragments for even more variations. Sounds like fun, - Mark |

If I had theory, I COULD do stuff like that.. but I'm one of those dullards that doesn't... so I need chord charts... I'm not interested in learing theory at this point, just old chords in new tunings... One of the reasons is voicing... The new band has 2 guitar players... and when Dan and I are both on accoustic guitar, it'd be really cool for one of us to be in a different tuning to avoid the boredom that is 2 standard tuned accoustic guitars... we already try capoing on different frets and playing different chord shapes, but something more is needed... or rather if I can find something more, it'dbe even better... I also have this stupid dream that one day I'll be able to play like Donn Ross, Garnet Rogers and or Stephen Fearing... all heros mine, and all use alternate tunings... ;-) |

I have it and although MOST of the chords on it are finger-breakers that completly undo any of the good of playing in an open tuning, it is a wonderful resource... ;-) |

If a person retunes his strings to a different starting point and then forces his left hand through various Yogic contortions to return all those strings to a "normal" pitch by fretting them, what has he done? Eliminated the reason for alternate tunings. I mean, it you take an EADGBE guitar, tune it to FFFFFF and then fret it back to EADGBE, will you have uniqueness or exoticism worth the effort? Maybe I'm missing something, but I think not. I have played an open G guitar against a standard and the combo does sound fuller than two standards; all I was doing was pattern-pick-cum-melody-notes. If you just want to get out of your colleague's pitch range, what's wrong with capoing up and playing in a different key? All the theory that takes is knowing that it's only one fret from B to C and from E to F, but otherwise it's two frets from one natural to the next. I know they do... all ya gotta do is watch ANY of the players I've listed above and you'll see 'em... There's nothing wrong with capoing.. and if you'll READ my post aboive, that's exactily what I said... I'm just looking to add something else... We may not HAVE to make it hard on ourselves, but -I- like the challenge, and Don Ross didn't become the guitar GOD that he is today by taking the path of least resistance... |

If you know the notes of a chord, and can count frets, you can make your own chords. Open G is DGDGBD on your guitar. Obviously the G triad is composed of G, D, and B. The C triad is C, G, and E. So your guitar is in open G. Well, you have the G for the C chord on strings 3 and 5. Now comes the tricky part. You need a C and the second string is the best place to look, 'cause one step (fret) up on the second string is C. Now, we need an E. Well there are three D's here and E is just two steps (frets) up on any of those three. The joy of open tuning is you don't need to fret all three strings, just pick the 4th string and fret it up two. This little two finger chord is sort of a C (it even looks a little like a C chord). The ringing D's on strings one and six just provide a "little" different tone. I know this seems laborious at first, figuring the triad and looking for it on the fret board, but it works. The other joy of open tunings is to make your own chords. Put your fingers down and fiddle around. You can make some nice noises that way. Good luck! Roger in Baltimore |
