Subject: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:15 AM St Brigid is traditionally shown with her cow (she was a noted dairywoman and alemaker, as well as a bishop). But where would I get a little statue of her? |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: MMario Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:17 AM I would try a religious supply house. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: Giac Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:29 AM You don't say where you live, but in most larger U.S. cities, there is at least one "gift shop" affiliated with a local church that recognizes saints. If they don't have what you want in stock, they likely can order it for you. You might look in the yellow pages under "churches." Good luck, Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: Hollowfox Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:31 AM Many USA towns also have gift shops that specialize in Irish imports as well. And this sounds like a great excuse for net-surfing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:36 AM I live in, umm, Ireland. Tried netsurfing without success. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: Deni Date: 12 Apr 01 - 10:51 AM I got a small pewter statue of St Brigid in a Cornish gift shop.(UK) She is holding a flaming torch, and there are celtic knotwork designs on the base of the figure. The do them for around a tenner, I think. No cow though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,Margaret V at work Date: 12 Apr 01 - 11:10 AM Kylemore Abbey seemed to have an enormous gift shop... maybe they have something? Margaret |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 12 Apr 01 - 12:06 PM Hmm. Here's a picture, though rather an iffy biog. No cow, but her bishop's crozier. http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/manx/parishes/be/stbrdget.htm |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: Peg Date: 12 Apr 01 - 12:11 PM well, if you are willing to get a more pagan representation (the goddess Brigid, as opposed to the saint) there are a number of catalogs/companies who make them...she is revered as a figure of Celktic myth: the goddess of poetry, healing and smithcraft. At Imbolc/Candlemas she is featured in rites which emphasize her connection to domestic creatures (lambing, etc.) and the rebirth of the land in spring... As for statues I ahve seen a number of them from different makers: Mythic Images, for example, out of California. Paul Borda, a sculptor from Vermont. If you type in "Brigid statue" in a serach you will probably find any number of mail order sources... |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 12 Apr 01 - 12:38 PM webshots.com has a picture of St Brigid, no cow. Why would the patron St of Blacksmiths want a cow anyway. JohnB |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:05 PM Because her dairy was famous, and she's also the patron of milkmaids, cheesemakers etc etc. And she made great beer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: Mountain Dog Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:45 PM I remember being told that St. Brigid was associated specifically with red cows and that often the eldest red milk cow of a herd is called "Bridey" (one of her nicknames) in her honor. There's an interesting image of St. Brigid to be seen above the doorway of the tower that stands on the summit of Glastonbury Tor. It's a stone bas relief above and to the left of the western doorway of the tower. If memory serves, you can make out a cow in the image. (The tower is all that remains of a church, dedicated to St. Michael, destroyed by an earthquake many centuries since.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: MudGuard Date: 12 Apr 01 - 03:22 PM Sorry I can't help with the statue but I have a question regarding St. Brigid When is St. Brigid's day? I can't find it in my (German) calendar MudGuard |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 13 Apr 01 - 03:34 AM February 1. Look up La Feile Bride or La Feile Brighde on Google and you should find a few entries. It's traditional here to make a cross with rushes like this http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Canopy/1956/makeacross.html on that day and hang it over the back door to keep the home safe from fire and strife all year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Where would I get a statue of St Brigid? From: roopoo Date: 14 Apr 01 - 02:00 AM There is a celtic cross design called "St. Bridget's Cross". It is a simple design of 7 woven through 7 and the ends gathered in. Because it is simple, I can make them in my dough. I originally bought a resin casting of one as she is cited as the patron of doctors, healers and craftworkers. Is it the same as the above one? Andrea |
