The song is called "Pleasent and Delightful" listed as traditional and is taken from the "Jackie and Bridie" song book First verse and chorus line It was pleasant and delightful one midsummer's morn, When the fields and the meadows they were covered with corn, There were blackbirds and thrushes sang on every green spray And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day. No cap or cloak this maiden wore Her neck and feet were bare Down to the grass in ringlets fell Her glossy golden hair A milking pail was in her hand She was lovely, young and gay Her beauty excelled even Helen of Troy At the dawning of the day. On a mossy bank I sat me down With the maiden by my side With gentle words I courted her And asked her to be my bride She turned and said, "Please go away," Then went on down the way And the morning light was shining bright At the dawning of the day. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: GUEST Date: 24 Apr 13 - 07:13 AM The version mentioned by McGrath of Harlow above by Edward Walsh was first printed in his Book "Irish Popular Songs 1849. However, all his work were translations for much older songs in Gaelic, this been a translation of "Fainne Geal on Lea". The tune is the same as that used later by Luke Kelly's version of the Patrick Kavanagh poem "Raglan Road" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: Georgiansilver Date: 23 Apr 13 - 05:55 PM 1. Oh Caledonia, we are your sons Restore us once again From your dreams awake And we will pledge to thee 2. We fished stormy waters when fish were a-plenty We ploughed the wild heathland till it bloomed like a rose We built the great ships that sailed all the oceans We toiled underground nature's treasures exposed We've travelled the world, we've known kings, we've known princes Discoursed with scholars, reasoned with fools Oh we've served with distinction all down through the ages But still in our homeland the foreigner rules Chorus: O we'll fight for the right and the dawning of the day When we'll rise again to win our claim for Scottish destiny 3. We're fierce as the badger when danger is threat'ning We've the cunning and the guile that the fox calls his own We've the reason that guides our great streams in their coursing We're as stubborn as the headland that stands all alone We can laugh with the devil, no one can laugh louder Weep with the willow when our heart's sorely pressed We're as gently and prickly as our own downy thistle We can work with the hardest and play with the best Chorus 4. But our land it is owned by the faceless investor Our fish and our farming no longer our own Our industry's ruined, our assets are squandered Our souls are in hock and our children in pawn It's no use in thinking it's too late for changing No use in thinking that it's not up to you You must teach, you must learn and to change things be willing For you are your country and your country is you Chorus 5. Too long we have blamed the foreign oppressor Too long we have hoped for our hero's return We've raised all our banners in poem and in legend We've rested on laurels that turned into thorns To dwell on past glories at the cost of invention Is to squander the gifts that our forefathers gave So take strength from the past but declare your intention To change this dear land back to Scotland the Brave Chorus 6. Oh Caledonia, we are your sons And will again be free The Dawning of The Day... The Corries. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: OldPossum Date: 28 Mar 04 - 05:05 PM Dear Amy, are you sure you are talking about the same lyrics? If you check the notorious other thread you will find quite a few songs about the Dawning of the Day, or with flying swallows in them. And Com Seangan I think you are fighting a lost cause. With all those Dawning of the Day songs already out there, why worry about one more? In fact, if someone writes a song and can't think of a title for it, he can always call it The Dawning of the Day! *grin* The more the merrier! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: Com Seangan Date: 26 Mar 04 - 08:10 PM Well then Let's not confuse the thing with the REAL Dawning of the Day. (Fainne Geal an Lae). It had nothing to do with eirther Finbarr Fury or Raglan Road. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: GUEST,Amy in Charlottesville Date: 26 Mar 04 - 01:53 PM My friend, Harvey Brown, was made to learn these lyrics as a spoken word poem in high school in the 1940s. I don't expect that Fury is the original author. Does anyone know who actually wrote the words? Thanks. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DAWNING OF THE DAY (Eddie Furey) From: OldPossum Date: 24 Mar 04 - 02:53 PM Well what JB should have done was to post in the original thread saying that they hadn't found the right song. I assume that you are the same as the John Barden who started that thread. When someone asks a question it is always nice if they keep track of the thread, and respond to it so that people can tell if they have found the right answer, and that you are still interested. Anyway here it is:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: GUEST,JB Date: 24 Mar 04 - 01:07 PM Thanks for the link, but unfortunately that`s not the song I had in mind. I know there are a number of versions of this song, but the one I am looking for has nothing to do with the melody to Raglan Road. As I said I heard the Fury brothers sing it once many moons ago, but I don`t know name of the LP. Probably no longer available anyway. JB |

Subject: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: GUEST,JB Date: 23 Mar 04 - 01:02 PM I`m looking for the lyrics to a song recorded many years ago by Finbar and Eddie Fury. I think it`s called "Dawning of the Day". I know there are a variety of songs with this title, but the opening lines went something like: When the swallows homeward fly When the roses fall and die While in your bed you lie At the dawning of the day. Alternatively does anyone know which Fury LP this might be on? Would appreciate any ideas on this. Thanks JB |

WENN DIE SCHWALBEN HEIMWÄRTS ZIEHN
Wenn die Schwalben heimwärts ziehn,
2. Wenn die Schwäne südlich ziehn,
3. Armes Herz, was klagest du? WHEN THE SWALLOWS HOMEWARD FLY
When the swallows homeward fly,
When the white swan southward roves,
My poor heart, why do you cry,

Subject: Lyr Add: THE DAWNING OF THE DAY (Edward Walsh) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Apr 01 - 06:35 PM There are a couple of Englished versions of "Dawning of the Day/ Fainne gael an lea" in the DT. (Which has nothing to do with the Furey song requested, but that's already been run to earth satisfactorily enough.) But it doesn't have this one, which James Healy (Second Book of Irish Ballads) declares to be the most singable, and which was recorded by Count John McCormack. It was written by Edward Walsh.
THE DAWNING OF THE DAY
At early morn I once had been
Her feet and beauteous head were bare
Beside me sat that maid divine (This is all happening by the banks of Lough Leane, one of the Lakes of Killarney. Where else?) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Dawning of the Day From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 19 Apr 01 - 01:02 PM There's more than one song and tune "Dawning of the Day/ Fainne gael an lea". The oldest tune of that title is the one for Robert Burns "My love is like a red, red rose". See the Irish tune titles index on my website. Search for 'dawning' and 'fainne'. [See also Phillips Barry's BFSSNE on the wide-spread use of one of those tunes. Unfortunately the AFS reprint doesn't include either title in the index, so start at page 5 in issue #12.
