Can someone explain what is meant by 'spyware'

From what I've read, computer 'experts' think that it's terrible, but never seem to explain why.

I'm just an average windows 98 user, who has nothing to hide.

Should I be bothered, or is it paranoid hype?

Grateful for any thoughts.

Some software manufacturers include logic in their code that identifies your usage pattern and reports it back to the Marketing Department, where it adds to long lists that can either be analyzed for market advantage or sold as prospects depending on what is reported.

It is one of those odd things that is morally reprehensible and yet somehow legally and condoned as a means of improving market share.

If you type "spyware" into the Google engine you can find all sorts of opinions about it.

because of this problem, there are now programs designed to find spyware on your computer and give YOU the option to delete it, and other programs designed to give YOU control over what come into your computer (beyond virus worries)...many otherwise good programs do report on YOUR internet habits, and it should be YOUR choice whether to allow this. 'Almost' all functions can be done with spy-free programs, many of them free!...I will post some links in a bit outlining where to get info and what programs are 'bad'...and where to get replacements if you wish to avoid spyware.

Bill, I'd appreciate that.

I have nothing to hide, but I'd prefer to be free.

Thanks Bill

freeware which does NOT have spyware over here

and a program to look at YOUR computer and help you find & delete spyware Ad Aware

I get 'most' of my info by reading a newsgroup ..... alt.comp.freeware ...the folks there have NO tolerance for it.

among other things, spyware can slow down your download times, dial your internet provider when you aren't even home. it can also automatically download upgrades that you may not want.
