Subject: Chords for Lagan Love From: Mudlark Date: 25 May 01 - 03:25 AM Is there anyone who would be willing to give me the chords for Lagan Love? I can pick it out on the dulcimer in Mix. mode, but as is often the case with tunes that fit this mode I have trouble on the guitar choosing the proper chords from my rather limited collection. It seems to start out ok in G, for example, but then veers into unknown (to me) territory on the last syllable of "lullabies." and from there I am lost. I was surprised to read that this song is of fairly recent origin! Surely not the tune...it sounds ancient.... Mudlark |

Hope this helps |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Mudlark Date: 25 May 01 - 12:05 PM Thanks Patrish, that's great. Now if I can just figure out what an F flat looks like, and then fit my fingers around it, I'm in business. Mullark |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Sorcha Date: 25 May 01 - 12:44 PM Bear in mind that I am not a guitar player, you need Rick or Justa Picker, but I found this on the net.....Fb is (from bass E up) x24442 and if that doesn't make sense, click here and either scroll down or use the Edit/Find to look for Fb. |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Don Firth Date: 25 May 01 - 01:25 PM Uh -- I think there is a goof in those chord charts, Sorcha. The 4th Degree Sub-Dominant shown here is identical to the 1st Degree Tonic. Nope. Can't be correct. In the same way that a Cb major is identical to a B major, an Fb major is exactly the same as an E major. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Sorcha Date: 25 May 01 - 02:25 PM Oh well, I told you I wasn't a guitar player. I did know that Fb (the note) is the same as E, but didn't know if the entire chord was same. |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Don Firth Date: 25 May 01 - 02:59 PM They made the same boo-boo in the B major chord family. Some of these chord fingerings are theoretical -- pretty much caposville, but one would wish that they would at least proof-read them before putting them up on a web-page. More confusion for the innocents! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Helen Date: 29 May 01 - 01:35 AM Does anyone have a midi file for this? I am copying the tune into Noteworthy from Sheila Larchet Cuthbert's book called The Irish Harp Book, but I can't get a fix on what the time signature might be, if any. I suspect that I am going to have to put different time signatures in some bars. Also, when I opened the noteworthy type (not midi type 1) file today, after typing it in last night, the programme has done something to the file - i.e. it seems to be trying to "normalise" the notes to make them fit the lengths of the bars, which is a problem because there seems to be no normal bar lengths to speak of in the tune. When I have made some sort of sense of the Noteworthy file I can put it in here, if anyone is interested. I'm not afraid of playing around with the timing, because I do it with the song Carrickfergus when I play it, but I just need some alternative viewpoints to try to make sense of it. In a previous thread about this song there was a hint that someone was going to post the midi to Alan's Midi Page, but it isn't there. I do have tape of someone singing it but I'm not very fond of her version - but I have heard it sung, and also played by a folkie I know on his Irish bouzouki - sounds really good on that. Helen |

Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: mousethief Date: 30 May 01 - 11:26 AM Has anybody mentioned for us uninitiated what "lagan" means? I've wondered that ever since seeing the title to this ancient tune. Alex |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Mudlark Date: 30 May 01 - 02:55 PM Mousethief... It is capitalized in the version I saw....Lagan stream. I've always wondered about that, and "lennon-shee" as well. So maybe there is a stream called Lagan. The dict. claims lagan means goods thrown into the sea with a bouy attached so they can be found again....a bit of a stretch to fit THAT into the song! On the clicky version above there is a sort of explanation about the lennon thing....from the gaelic...can't remember exactly because it wasn't very satisfying... Also....this version says this is fairly modern, probably an art song of the last century....I cannot believe it...such a modal, ancient tune, and words as well....I've always loved it "...and even when the beetle horn has lulled the eve to sleep..." .sheer poetry... Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: mousethief Date: 30 May 01 - 04:12 PM So a Lagan love would be a love from Laganville? Anyway as you say the melody is beautiful, and the words are great. alex |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: GUEST,whatever Date: 31 May 01 - 12:02 AM Mudlark, Click here or here for two different Lagans. I suspect that the second is a better bet for the song. clickable text here |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: GUEST,whatever, buggerit Date: 31 May 01 - 12:03 AM I screwed the blue thingers. Anyway the first one is Coire Lagan on the Isle of Skye. The Second mentions a river: "(lg´n) (KEY) , river, c.40 mi (60 km) long, rising in Slieve Croob, SE Northern Ireland. It flows NW, then NE past Lisburn to Belfast Lough at Belfast. The port of Belfast and its shipbuilding yards are located at the mouth of the Lagan; a canal joins the river to Lough Neagh." |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 31 May 01 - 07:23 AM The question of location, and others questions relating to the song, have been answered at some length in previous discussions. See in particular: My Lagan Love LAGAN LOVE QUERY |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Mudlark Date: 31 May 01 - 07:53 PM Thanks for clickys and fixup of clicky and for pointing me to the other threads about this song...lots of fascinating info and speculation... Not surprised that it is sung a cappella...I have yet to work out chords that really satisfy me, but then my repetoire is limited.... Mudlark |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Tattie Bogle Date: 31 May 01 - 08:14 PM I agree: forget the chords and sing it "a Cappella" ( in the chapel) |
Subject: RE: Chords for Lagan Love From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 31 May 01 - 08:46 PM Or, even better, sing it all by yourself without accompaniment; that way, no chapel is needed... |

Subject: RE: Chords Req: My Lagan Love From: GUEST,jaydub@xtra.co.nz Date: 26 Sep 05 - 04:48 AM Came across this ancient query asking for these chords. I would love to get hold of them if you could oblige. Certainly grateful. Just love the tune. jaydub |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: My Lagan Love From: michaelr Date: 26 Sep 05 - 08:48 PM Well, jaydub, I'll tell you the chords I use: A G A D A A G A D A A D/F# C D Bm E A(no 3rd)* Am A(no 3rd) G A D A *At the risk of being obvious, A(no 3rd) means you don't play the C# on the B string. Then, as you go into the fourth line, play the flatted 3rd - the C - with feeling. You can listen to a clip of a recording of the song by my band Greenhouse at this place (requires RealPlayer). Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Chords Req: My Lagan Love From: Helen Date: 29 Sep 05 - 03:34 PM My abject apologies to Guest, Greg back in May 2001 who offered the chords to me. I must have missed the thread when it came up again and I missed out on his offer to email them to me. Thanks to michaelr for posting the ones he uses. Helen |
