Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Angun Date: 01 Jun 01 - 04:51 AM Thank you Brian! I learned this song from Brendan Begley on a festival here in Norway about one and a half year ago. I belive he have recorded it on one of his soloalbums. Angun |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Brían Date: 01 Jun 01 - 07:13 AM I thought it looked familiar. I heard him sing it in Portland, Maine a few months ago. Brían |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Brían Date: 01 Jun 01 - 10:01 PM Angun, I'm working on a translation. I went over it with a friend of mine today and we seem to be agreeing. irish is a tricky language. there is a lot that doesn't translate literally. I was once asked to tranlate a version of The Devil And The Farmer's Wife for a class. I did great until I had the devil closing the door and turning green. The word for green in irish is the same for lock. Of course that was a long time ago. I was Bríain, the genitive case. Brían |

Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 03 Jun 01 - 04:07 AM thanks Brian for your hard work. I'd need to take a look at both Irish and English off-line. I don't understand why Angun didn't refresh the earlier thread so that both lyrics and translation would be together!! |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Angun Date: 04 Jun 01 - 05:34 PM Thank you very very very much Brían! I hope I can do something for you sometime! Thanks again! Philippa, I didn't think about that...but now I'll remember it next time! Angun

Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Brían Date: 04 Jun 01 - 11:43 PM Your welcome, Angun. It's the sort of a translation i would use when I'm learning a song. It should follow the Irish pretty closely if you speak it at all. I could probably do a more correct english translation if you need it. Brían. If you have any more songs from Brendan Begley I would appreciate it. He is a truly wonderful singer. Beidh mé ag caint leat aríst. (I will be speking with you again), I'm sure. |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Angun Date: 05 Jun 01 - 05:00 AM Brían, I don't speak much Irish, but I'm working on that. I tried to translate the song before I asked for help, but I got a lot of difficulties, specially with the grammar. I do have one more Irish song I learned from Brendan Begley called " Bó Na Leadh Hairce", and two songs in English, "I Courted a Wee Lass" and "The Rose of Aranmore". Do you want me to email the songs to you? (I think he has recorded the English songs, but I don't know about the one in Irish) Angun |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Brían Date: 05 Jun 01 - 09:54 AM Thanks, Angun. I have the two english songs on a recording of his. "Bó na Leath Adhairce" I would be very interested in. i bet he does a great version of it. Brían |
Subject: RE: Cailín Na Gruaige Doinne From: GUEST,Angun Date: 06 Jun 01 - 09:17 AM Brían, do you need the lyrics to the two English songs? Let me know how I can give you "Bó na Leath Adhairce", I can send you the lyrics by email, but if you'd like the recording (not very good sound) I can send it to you by regular mail? Angun

Ar bhantaibh an tSróil sea d'fhagas mo stór,
Is 'neosfad mo stair dom mhuintir ar fad.
There's a note that 'doinne' is sung as 'dou-nni'
The Girl with the Brown Hair
On the plains of Sroil [Shrule?Strule?] I left my love
I tell my tale to my own folk all together
I am exhausted without anyone of my company
