Subject: Remind me where I got this tune? From: katlaughing Date: 24 Jun 01 - 12:33 AM One of my favourite pieces to play on the dulcimore is an old French tune called "Jean Petite Biron." Roger and I found it on some site linked in the Mudcat when I first started coming here. We were attracted to it because his mom was a Biron. We liked it so well we downloaded it and played it all of the time. It was really well sequenced, with electronic synthesizer made to sound like period instruments, very medievalish. If anyone wants to hear it I can email it. Anyway, I've gone looking for more tunes like it and went to the French folk songs site in the Links and, either they've changed to all piano midis or we are remembering incorrectly and that is not where we found it. I also thought I might have found it at Bruce Olson's Scarce songs, but I don't see any French one there and no midis. Do any of you recall any other sites which did great sequencing and had OLD French tunes? Thanks! kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Remind me where I got this tune? From: Sorcha Date: 24 Jun 01 - 12:42 PM kat, I am not having any luck at all. Can you e mail me the tune? Maybe it has another name. French, Fr. Canadian, Fr.Cajun, which French, do you know? |

Subject: RE: Help: Remind me where I got this tune? From: katlaughing Date: 25 Jun 01 - 03:03 PM Naw, weren't me, Sins, every other music book on there was mine, though.:-) I should probably bid on THAT one! Sorcha, Rog says it is old French, i.e. medieval times and I could swear I got if off THIS SITE, but as I said, they do not have the same type of midis, anymore, if it was that one. And, didn't Bruce used to have some midis or wavs on his Scarce Songs site? That was the only other place I could think of, but all I see are ABCs and no French. I will email you the tune. Thanks, it's not that I want to know much more about it, I'd just like to know where I found it, so I could visit the site and learn more like it. Sorry I lost track of this and didn't answer earlier. kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Remind me where I got this tune? From: IvanB Date: 26 Jun 01 - 12:35 PM Actually, kat, it's right where you thought it was, here: http://www.momes.net/comptines/comptines-danses.html#jean The name isn't listed as the same, and 'Biron' seems to be in the next tune down. The files at this site are a mixed bag, some done as piano only (or perhaps as no instrument specifies, which seems to default to piano when played back), others with varying instruments. A nice site that I don't remember seeing before. |

Subject: RE: Help: Remind me where I got this tune? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jun 01 - 12:56 PM Thank you, Ivan! That's odd in that when we saved it from that site, it was titled "Jean Petit Biron." I wonder if they had a mistake. I've noticed they've also resequenced it from the file we have. I could not find that for the life of me the other night. Great digging and I really appreciate it! I foudn the site, originally, in the Mudcat links. Glad you like it. Thanks for solving the puzzle! kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Remind me where I got this tune? From: IvanB Date: 26 Jun 01 - 02:51 PM Well, although the name's different, I noticed that the save-file in my temp directory was 'biron,' so I guess at some time the association was there. |
