Now in my eighties and busy with preparation for the ceremony preceding my body's entry into the urn, inspiring memories of vibrant young voices streaming out of that gaunt Victorian building's high-set, tall and narrow windows and brightening the lives of Harrow Road wayfarers as they flow. come creeping back. I'd very much like to have an adapted version of Lizette Reece's world-linking song performed at my funeral. Would I need to apply to the L W Reece estate for permission? Can you help me out here, Leo? And many thanks to IanC for starting this thread. I bet you never thought ... ... |

The words of the first line suddenly came into my head this morning -June 2012 - and I had to check on the Internet to recall the rest of the words.As a little girl, I always thought I had a harder task than most of my classmates to " grow nearer the sky " because I was very short anyway. (I am still only 5 foot!) |

I also remember line 8 as "'til the work be done" which IMHO is better. It's incredible how a few lines of verse can plonk you back behind a battered and ink-stained desk! How about "Pippa's Song" by Robert Browning? The year's at the spring, And day's at the morn; Morning's at seven; The hill-side's dew-pearl'd; The lark's on the wing; The snail's on the thorn; God's in His heaven — All's right with the world! |

It only occurred to me as an adult that it has a message about life apart from being a country hymn. We have periods of sun and rain throughout our lives, one following the other. And everything we encounter and all our actions ultimately allow us to grow nearer Godhead. Apart from that it's a very positive and uplifting song. It had a profound influence in my formative years - I loved singing it - and it's probably responsible for my lifelong optimism! |

We sang it when I was at Strand on the Green Infant and Junior School, Chiswick at my time there, 1965-72. I am now Director of Music at a large west London school. I have just woken up from a dream in which I was teaching a fellow musician this song. In the dream, he remembered it too after sang and played it from memory. (is this 'sad'? NO! I live music!) Lizette Woodworth Reese 9-Jan-1856 to 17-Dec-1935 Wrote quite a few books of poetry published from 1887 to 1936 (the last 2 retrospectively ... see link above). "Glad That I Live Am I" was included in the 1st edition of "Songs Of Praise" (edited by DEARMER, Percy, VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, R., and SHAW, Martin 1925) as number 424. It's pointed to in Oremus, but doesn't appear to be there, possibly for copyright reasons as the author died 1935 (which would mean that the words come out of copyright in 2010). :-) Ian |

Glad That I Live Am I
That the sky is blue; Glad for the country lanes, And the fall of dew.
After the sun the rain, All that we need to do, I haven't got the music (though I could sing it to you).
