Someone thought it would be funny or something to start a bogus membership as "kat\katlaughing" with a backslash, instead of the forward slash I've used.

Rather than deal with their bullshit, I have changed my membership back to just "katlaughing" so, please if you wish to reach me, PM to that membership name, only. remember it is all lower case.

Max, Joe and Pene are all aware of this and taking care of it on their end.

Agreed that too-close names should at least be discouraged if not disallowed. And someone deliberately posing as someone else (such as mousethEIf signing off as "Alex" in mousethIEf's style) should be harshly dealt with.

I'm sorry, but we can't keep ahead of all this. It would be really helpful if people would discuss Mudcat security flaws only by personal message to Max, Pene, or me. If you point out flaws in a public forum, it helps the flamers keep ahead of us. Silence is still the best tool against flamers. You may think you're solving the problem by posting a response, but your just feeding that flamer's craving for attention.

Same thing goes with questioning the deletion of flame threads. The "pornography" thread brought some 50 well-intentioned responses, and a discussion of whether I was right to delete another thread that requested links to porno sites. If you want to discuss my editing actions, do it with me privately. Public discussion of anti-flaming efforts just encourages flamers.
I've spent most of the day cleaning up messes, and a lot of the mess has been caused by well-meaning Mudcatters trying to second-guess my actions. I make lots of mistakes, but I try to do my best. Public discussion of my efforts just makes things worse. Please, people, do yourselves a favor and answer flamers only with silence. I'm outa here. On vacation. Goodbye.

Actually, I'm glad kat brought this up in the public Forum; otherwise I would've had no idea that this was going on (and I can't imagine her PM'ing EVERYONE to tell them of the name change!). Now I know to proofread the "From:" line carefully before making assumptions about the post-er's identity.

Let's face it; flamers will always be "ahead" of us if we look at it that way. Look at it another way, and they're beneath us. Perhaps, in the row of library computers, they're beside us.

In one (twisted) sense, I have to admire their creativity, and we can take a lesson from them to beware of our own complacency. Also, I have to chuckle when I read complaints in the Forum about their having nothing better to do than flame us; what better things could/should WE be doing?

Garg was often and still can be a pain in the ass, but he was as I said above, very knowledgeable....and not just musically. Although he pissed and moaned and often attacked because this wasn't a "Folk and Blues" site anymore, he would often participate quite well in BS threads. Want an example? Check this thread.

His underscore was often not completely consistent and his postings were often filled with spelling problems (if you read that thread I linked, you will see why) but when he really got rolling on the trolling and actually doing some Internet stalking, he was over the edge. AS Bill said, after a bit of an outing, he slowed down a lot and only makes the infrequent appearance.

Sharon, we had about a dozen different postings the other day supposedly from garg, but most were someone screwing around after they saw the posts. The first two and possibly another were definitely Greg, but most were not. There are a few keys if you know him.

For all his crap, he also has a sense of humor and can be different but he chooses no to be that way. .......Sent me a card a couple of years back during the aneurysm thing......a "Congrats on the Birth of Your Baby" card.....along with a humorous note.
