Last weekend Mister and I went to a pre-1840 blackpowder shoot, and while I did not shoot as well as I had hoped, I did win a prize! Plus I also won a prize for my tomahawk throwing. (I guess all that practice paid off!) AND we sold three tapes to people just sittin around the campfire Friday night.

Anyone else? :-)

KimC, I make it a habit to never try to upstage anyone who wins a prize for tomahawk throwing. Congratulations! It sounds like it was fun!

Kim - Where was the shoot and what caliber were you shooting ? My brother { ironmule } goes to these shoots and recreations on a regular basis. And feel free to tell us more about the tape. I must have missed it on another thread.

So Kim.....Did you do better than Ed Ames did on the Johnny Carson Show? (If you have never seen it, he was doing the Daniel Boone series at the time and demonstrated tomahawk throwing. They had a lifesize target shaped like a man and he stuck the tomahawk right in the crotch. The laughter went on for at least 10 minutes.)

Athena is a 45 caliber flintlock, a Dixie Gun Works replica of a Pennsylvania long rifle. Blond wood with nice brass inlays. She belonged to my father and hung on the wall for at least the last 12 years. I inherited her when my father died last year.

The shoot was at Davy Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg, TN. No people were harmed in the competition, only innocent targets. (And one spider. Sorry about the spider.)

Yes, I think I did better than poor Ed! I surprised myself since I had sucked so bad with my target at home.

Our tape, which came out last year, has five "traditional" songs and five original songs that sound old. Mostly Civil War-related, but not all. Interested parties can PM me.

Who else has surprised themselves lately?

Okay then....try this!

my 8 year old Michael is attending an Art Camp at the Ohio Decorative Arts Center. The kids range in age from 7 to 15. They are working on a set for a play and some of them are doing the play. Michael has been having a pretty good time but it's not what he (or Karen and I) were expecting. He was hoping to do a lot more drawing. He is working away painting clouds and making flowers and such though and having a pretty decent time anyway. He's there 4 hours a day.

Last Thursday he finally had a chance to do some drawings along with some of the other kids who were out of things to do on setwork temporarily. This was the first time that anyone there had seen his drawing. When I picked him up, Trish, the head honcho pulled me aside and quite enthusiastically said, "Michael is quite an artist!"

I agreed but with the disclaimer that I was his Dad and not a casual observer. She then told me that she thought she would use one of his drawings for the cover of their play program!!! Michael was pretty cool about it but Dad was stylin' and profilin' back to the van.......Yes..Yes..Yes!!!!!!!

A couple of weeks ago I went to Irish Week at the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia. At one of the singing sessions, I got up the nerve to sing this for a crowd that included Robbie O'Connell and Frank Harte. Much to my shock and amazement, it went over incredibly, and Robbie pronounced it "brilliant" and requested it again the next night. Needless to say, my head grew several hat sizes.

BTW Kim, isn't it fun throwing tomahawks? That "thunk" when it hits the target is very satisfying.

Spaw, re: your earlier post, have you ever been down-wind of a black-powder firearm when it went off? Phe-e-e-e-u-u-wy!!!

A bit of thread-drift. bob jr, Kim C is not necessarily bragging about her skill at being able to inflict injury. It's a sport. I've done a lot of target shooting (Smith & Wesson Model 41 .22 caliber, designed as a target pistol, never intended to be used as a weapon and poorly designed for that purpose -- it's over a foot long, has a muzzle-brake, and comes in a box, not a holster). The whole purpose is to improve your scores at poking holes in a piece of papar at 25 yards. The mental set is kind of like golf.

Also, I used to fence, but I never, ever, had any intention of trying to kill someone with a sword. Facing someone in a combat situation with a foil in your hand (and a protective mask on, of course) and imagining that if your opponent slips through your guard, you could wind up with two feet of sharp steel through your lungs is a kind of romantic, atavistic fantasy that lends a certain caution to your swordplay -- but to be faced with the real thing is not romantic at all!

There are a lot of sports that were serious survival skills and abilities in times gone by, but in a modern, civilized world, have outgrown their practical usefulness (I don't regard trying to inflict injury as "practical"). They are thoroughly enjoyable sports, nevertheless.

Spaw, that is great about Michael. Maybe you will post his drawing in your online photo album so's we all can see it? (that reminds me, I need to update my album!)

Congrats to you too, jeffp. I hope to get to one of their hootenannies one of these days. And yes, I like that "thunk" sound.

Fencing, now that's something else I'd like to get into. Then I could be the yodeling fiddling fencing tattooed tommyhawk throwin flintlock shootin belly dancer. Reckon that would draw a crowd?

Are you saying I deserve to be shot? 'Cause that ain't very nice. ;-)

Believe me, though, there's some people who would use live ammo if they thought they could get away with it. And there's been more than one incident where an improper weapons inspection failed to detect a live round left over from a day of target shooting. I think it was at the 1999 over-large Gettysburg event that someone loaned his pistol to a friend who was participating - he hadn't checked it himself, and it turned out to have a ball in it. Someone did get hurt, albeit not seriously.

Some of us Civil War buffs are fun people. :-)

Kim C... don't you mind any of those naysayers. Be proud of your accomplishment. As for those who have no understanding of your passtime, or even of the fact that they would be in a sorry state if it weren't for our technology and prowess with it, hey man, you can't teach a blind dog to pull it's own weight... you just let them eat with the rest of the pack and comfort them when they whine. Of course, dogs have more sense about some things. Too bad some people don't.

And now for something completely different. Due to disability I could no longer continue my beloved English country dancing. I've spent quite a long time getting myself mobile. Last night, for the first time in four years, I danced. Only for an hour, but I danced. And I believe that's worth crowing about.

Oh, to dance! how wonderful for you! Congrats on your perseverence. I blew the doors off the National League of Nursing test I took back in the spring, the day I fell and sprained my ankle (with such grace!) walking into the classroom for the exam. I took a final exam and the NLN with ice on my foot and strong pain meds supplied by my classmates not kicked in yet. I got my test results back last week. I scored in the 99th percentile. OOOOH, yeah! My husband always says I do my best work under pressure. Sharon

Nick, while I can't comment on the history of the tomohawk, the history of firearms has not been driven by subsistence, its been war that has given guns the impetus to evolve from matchlock to wheel lock to flintlock, then as soon as production methods caught up mass produced rifled weapons of war followed, don't let romantic Davey Crocket stuff obscure the reallity.

Having said that I would have liked to have fired a flintlock, there is something wonderfully archaic about the idea of the flash in the primming pan the slight pause then bang, and the large cloud of smoke. As long as the gun isn't pointed at anyone it sounds like a great pastime, I don't see many rampages undertaken with muzzle loading flintlocks.

Kim, I hope you can get up to the three per minute.

Sledge

Well, I guess it depends on where you are. If you're trying to lay in a food stash before winter, it's a subsistence tool. If your fort's under siege, it's a weapon of war.

It's two-two-TWO guns in one! And Crockett had to use em both.

I seen a matchlock demonstration when we were at Jamestown. The guy could load and fire in 30 seconds. Mister thinks he is going to build himself a matchlock, but I ain't too keen on the idea. It's just not as pretty of a gun.

If your flintlock is really well-made (and clean!), there is virtually no pause a-tall between the spark and the CRACK.

Thanks Sledge, I'm gonna work on that. :-)
