Subject: Stolen Guitar.Whitby Fest From: White Dove Date: 30 Aug 01 - 11:01 AM Raggytash suggested that I post this thread.....you never know!!! With soo many friends here it could be spotted!! Although this is quite a long shot as my 'Baby Taylor'does not have any distinguishing marks. It was teasured and is still in mint condition...as is the hard case. The guitar is a mahogany 3/4 size drednaught, the case is black and has the words'Baby Taylor' indented on the top. At the time it was stolen from the Tap and Spile pub last friday at approx 11.15pm, it had a blue stretch carrying belt attatched to the handle. One significant difference was that the Chubb capo...left in the case pocket had black sticky tape on the metal cross piece. Not much to go on I know but if you spot the capo and the guitar together then you could be reasonably suspicious :-) pls I would be very grateful if Mudcatters would keep a look out for me. Roz |

It is said that over a quarter of the ads are stolen property being fenced. If you spot it, approach the police before the vendor. Also, keep an eye on the music shops in town, and also the junk shops. Good luck. |

The scumbag will get maybe $50 (I don't know, thirty pounds?) fencing such an item--while causing untold heartache to the rightful owner. I'm sure you'd pay more than that to get it back safely. Years ago a friend's apartment was broken into. The burglar ignored the 1939 D18, and took the TV. People with no concept of true value...(or in that case, of market value either). While idly trolling for info on prewar Martin D45's last night, I came upon this anecdote. A legendary guitar repair expert named Don Teets, in Nashville I think, owned the only sunburst-top pre-war D45 ever made. A lot of people knew he had this priceless guitar as he was a well-known guy in the musical community. He got to thinking about the probable value of this guitar, and how many people knew where it was. He was living with his elderly parents, and he just didn't like the idea that they might come to harm if someone came to steal the D45. So he sold the guitar. Somebody with a rock-solid grasp of real values. (I think.) Hope you get your Taylor back.

This is a specialist instrument and must be one of only a few in the country. White Dove check with the shop you bought it from, guitars of this nature often have a serial number and they may have a record of the sale to you. Good Luck Raggy |

I am fairly new to Mudcat, but it is becoming quite clear to me why I am sooo hooked already.
I have been back in touch with the Whitby police, but sadly no joy. I have also contacted the store....I kept my receipt, and I do have a cereal number too if anyone comes across a suss Taylor.
I checked out the Fret site Sophocleese....and will follow these instructions to the letter...perhaps we could have a 'Kingston night workshop' on this in Hull and get all our instruments done with this method. I will see what I can do when I get my replacement guitar,I just can't be without one! I am hoping my house contents insurance will cover it. Meanwhile I will be scanning the ads too...it would be brilliant if it could be traced.

When Geoff's banjo was stolen in Bradford we found it the next day at a second hand music shop. The bloke in the shop was aware that it was stolen but reckoned if he bought it for £20 we had a better chance of getting it back than if he had rung the police and frightened the thieves off. He then spent all day trying to trace the owner by ringing all the pubs clubs etc and asking if they knew anyone who had a banjo with a duck on it!! Of course Geoff's banjo is very distinctive but not all the second hand places are bent so keep hoping. |

The only way I've found to hang on to an instrument is to hang on to the instrument, literally. I never set my guitar down and walk even a few feet from it. It's always in my hand. If I must set it down for some reason, I put one foot on the case while I take care of whatever caused me to put it down. It's rare that I even let anyone else play it while I sit next to them. Once when I left my case open backstage during a gig, someone found my stash of carefully selected genuine tortise shell picks. I haven't used a tortise shell pick since though I sure wish I had some. I had a student make off with a guitar I really loved. He didn't have a guitar so I let him use an old beat up Gibson LG-1 of mine. He took it somewhere public and claims it was stolen from him. Nothing I could do to recover the loss; he didn't have any money and it wasn't worth enough for an insurance claim. It had plenty of sentimental value though. Sleepy John Estes used to borrow it to play sometimes when he'd break a string and Big Joe Williams and Yank Rachel had both played it some. A close friend and bandmate of mine had an original five-string Bacon & Day Silver Bell Symphonie banjo stolen. A valueable collectors item that was also his main playing banjo. It was all gold plated, still had the leg lever mute, "mother-of-toilet-seat" fingerboard and resonator back with hand carved detail and dye worked into the carvings, rhinestones set in the border of the headstock... It's probably in some Japaneese collection by now but if you ever see such a banjo, drop me a line and I'll let my friend know. - Mark |

I remember, a couple of years back, at a festival in Amsterdam, the organisers were so concerned about this, that all musicians checked their instruments into a compound, retrieved them to perform, and checked them back in afterwards. There had obviously been a series of previous robberies. It is always vital to have someone watch your stuff, even if you just go to the bar for a pint. At least one hopeful point is that email communication can alert people to watch out for your instrument. We'll all do just that, and maybe get it back for you. Good Luck, Al. |

There aren't too many Baby Taylors in the UK, so it should be easy to spot. Although I remember Diz Disley having a Macafferi stolen many years ago - a rare and distinctive instrument - and as far as I know he never got it back. Some scumbag has probably still got it in his attic. If it was insured, I have a Baby which I could part with if you want a replacement. It's a bit small for an ogre like me! I have been making all kind of enquiries to find mine tho.....it seems that somone was seen taking my guitar from the pub. Apparently one of three youths from Middlesborough. ..appologies if this is only a rumour. So if any mudcatters are passing a second hand store up there selling guitars I would appreciate it if you could take a peek. One new development is I am told that the company that made the Baby Taylor cases has stopped making them and that a year ago the soft backpack case was introduced over here in the UK. This means that the number of Taylors in hard cases in the UK could be significantly fewer than expected! As I mentioned before, the case is very easily identified as a Taylor as it has the large words BABY TAYLOR indented into the neck of the case. The model number is 301-M, serial number for my guitar is 990910309-1. The first 2 digits= 1999, 2nd two 09=September, 3rd pair=10th day, and 09= the 9th guitar to be produced on that day. (( My baby was the 9th to be born on the 9th of the 10th in 1999 ) I learned all this from the Taylor website....also the 300 series were 25th aniversary models. I am not quite sure if this included mine, but there is very little info about the baby taylors that have a mahogany top as mine did. Does this make it fairly rare? I don't know. It would be useful to know ...would it then be easier to spot. All the others I have seen have been in a lighter wood. I know I sound like I am grasping at straws here....gawddddd RATS!!!!!!! In the seventies his car was stolen - bad enough, but his Fylde guitar and a mandolin were inside! Heartbroken, never expected to see them again, but within a day or two the police called to say that the instruments had been found sitting by the side of a road. The thief clearly had no idea what he had so just dumped them and they were found before coming to any harm. The same guitar later survived falling from a height onto a table, bouncing off and landing on a concrete sculpture (which it smashed) and thence to the floor. There's one small dent in the wood to show for this and it was otherwise unscathed. Only seven lives left now! :) |

The scumbag who stole your baby may just realise he has a real hot potato, however it is unlikely that he knows that a sizable proportion of the folk community is looking out for him. Do you know of any catters in Middlesborough, if that is where it was heading, who could patrol the music and 2nd hand shops over the next 6 months or so. I,ve got some music mates in Bradford checking the shops there this week and I will continue to check round here. One shop not mentioned was the Music Room at Cleckheaton who buy and sell such instruments, maybe worth a call. Raggy |

It might just sucker the thief into answering, esp. if you say cost is no problem. Unless of course it was a canny thief who already knew how to fence such items. If she doesn't get hers back, I've offered to sell her mine. It is also a sprucetop, but has the all-important hard case. I hope if I ever lose an instrument, I get this level of interest and sympathy!
