Subject: Lyr Add: THE SHIFTING WHISPERING SANDS From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Feb 02 - 12:38 PM I think what you see and hear at the Jim Reeves link above is only Part 1 of the song. The song was divided into Parts 1 and 2 to fit it on a 45-rpm record. Bill Sables, I'm guessing that's why you remember the Eamonn Andrews version as "having more of a story." From a Dutch Jim Reeves fan site (I corrected some spelling.)
THE SHIFTING WHISPERING SANDS
(Spoken:) I seemed to be surrounded by a mystery so heavy and oppressive I could scarcely breathe. For days and weeks I wandered aimlessly in this valley, seeking answers to the many questions that raced through my fevered mind: "Where was everyone? Why the white bones? The dry wells? The barren valley where people must have lived and died?" Finally, I could go no farther. My food and water gone, I sat down and buried my face in my hands, and resting thus, I learned the secret of the shifting, whispering sands. How I escaped from the valley I do not know; but now, to pay my final debt for being spared, I must tell you what I learned out there on the desert, so many years ago.
(Choir:)
Of sidewinders, and the horned toads of the thorny chaparral,
(Spoken:)
How the miner left his buckboard, went to work his claim that day,
(Choir:)
(Spoken:)
(Choir:) [Recorded by Rusty Draper, Sheb Wooley, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, the Sons of the Pioneers, and Eamonn Andrews.] |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shifting Whispering Sands From: folkmonster Date: 03 Feb 02 - 05:27 PM Add: The version by Eammon Andrews was voted one of the worst records of all time in the 'Kenny Everett Bottom 30' competition on Capital Radio in the 1970's.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shifting Whispering Sands From: bill\sables Date: 01 Sep 01 - 07:34 PM I just remembered another part; "Of Sidewinder and the Horned toad and the lonely chaperell Of the sunny days and moonlight nights And the coyote's lonely yell Oh the stars seem you could touch them as you sit and gaze on high To the heavens where we're hoping We'll be going when we die." And yes it is the same Eamon Andrews who did "This is Your Life" and "Crackerjack" Bill |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Shifting Whispering Sands From: bill\sables Date: 01 Sep 01 - 09:29 AM Thanks Ugly, That is the same song but that is the version by Rusty Draper which was probably the earliest. I was looking for the version by Eamon Andrews from the UK which seemed to have more of a story as far as I can remember> Cheers Bill |

Subject: Shifting Whispering Sands From: bill\sables Date: 01 Sep 01 - 06:08 AM Can anyone supply me with the words for "Shifting Whispering Sands" It was recorded in the 50s/60s by Eamon Andrews in the UK. The first line is something like; "I discovered the valley of the shifting whispering sands While prospecting for gold in one of out western states. Most of the song was spoken but it had a sung chorus. Cheers Bill |
