Subject: Where's the summer gone? From: Arnie Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:43 AM Went out in the garden today and suddenly realised that summer has suddenly gone! This has made me feel somewhat depressed as I only bought a garden hammock/swing last month and now it's ready for winter storage. I can recall sitting in warm sunshine only 2-3 wks ago and now there's a chill wind blowing so even in today's sun it's not 'sitting out' or even B-B-Q weather. Not only that but the summer flowers are all dying off rather too quick for comfort. It's times like these that I feel like leaving the UK for warmer climes - has anyone else still got summer? |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: CharlieA Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:55 AM Well it's occasionally sunny here in cov, it was cold this am but has warmed up. Doesn't seem to be much sign of a late summer like usual tho. shame really! Cxxx |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:57 AM Well Arnie, if you'll wait a bit, I think some of our Oz 'Catters will show up and tell you how glad they are that winter's finally about over! But I do know what you mean.........Here in the US midwest, the air begins to take on that smell and feel of Fall, even on the brightest and hottest days. The flowers and trees are in obvious change although our weather is still quite warm and pleasant. It's OK by me though as Autumn is my favorite season! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: MMario Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:58 AM worked a three hour gig yesterday at a ren-faire - and have to say I was hotter then I was at any point this summer. It was brutal. Now if it just doesn't turn cold before the three day gig in two weeks. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 10 Sep 01 - 12:03 PM -I- for one am glad that it's heat and opressive humidty are nearly gone! Give me ice and snow and 30 below!! Any BTW... there's no such thing as weather you can't BBQ in!!! All year round! ;-) |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Sep 01 - 12:20 PM ... A few final rounds of cluster flies dying in the sunstruck windows, as they move indoors for the heat we turn on at night. Waning flea season. Ah, !muy romantico y pastoral! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Ebbie Date: 10 Sep 01 - 12:31 PM I love Autumn. And it is definitely here; leaves are turning, huge flocks of crows are streaming overhead, there's fresh snow on the mountain tops, grass growth has slowed way down, the rich smells of Autumn are in the air. Today the sun is bright and the ocean has that ripply look that comes from high clouds. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: CarolC Date: 10 Sep 01 - 12:58 PM Still plenty of summer left here (eastern West Virginia). We won't see fall for several more weeks, although there have been some signs that it is on its way. Everything's still very green, it's hot and humid today, and the crickets and cicadas are still making plenty of summer noises. Got a thunder storm rolling in right now. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Jim the Bart Date: 10 Sep 01 - 01:03 PM Always my favorite season, too. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Sep 01 - 01:04 PM Geez Ebbie, how long does Fall last in Alaska.......'bout a day and a half or what?(:<)) I guess I love Fall and Spring (moreso Fall) because they are truly temporary seasons..........yeah, I know, winter and summer are too, but there is a difference. There are parts of the world where it is cold all year round and parts that are hot all year too, places where there really is no true Fall or Spring. Our Autumns tend to last a long time and in the years where they don't, I'm always disappointed. The really great years where the weather remains crisp but not cold, warm, but not hot, and the colors come early and remain vivid for weeks.............Really special times. Damn...Reading what I just wrote.....I must be getting old....... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Arnie Date: 10 Sep 01 - 04:14 PM Still there is one consolation. At this time of the year I can sing my perennial song at the Folk Club - the one that has the line 'The chilly winds will soon begin and I'll be on my way, Gone a lonesome day, Gone a lonesome day' I really love the song but it is definitely a seasonal one! Also, I love Autumn too but what spoils that season is the thought that it's followed by Winter,,, |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: pattyClink Date: 10 Sep 01 - 04:29 PM 85, wet, and green here. We laugh about the 'chill in the air' since we stopped topping 90 every day. Looking forward to a very long slow beautiful autumn, but there will be a few more hot days first. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: guinnesschik Date: 10 Sep 01 - 05:23 PM There's still plenty of summer here, too. The grass in the back yard is about knee high due to some recent rains, and the temperature is in the lower 90's. Near perfect for this time of year. I love it when we get a bit of autumn here in Texas. Never fails to stir the blood and makes me want to ramble. Good thing October's full of road trips. I'll be ready to settle in come November. See, I'm already rambling.... |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Sep 01 - 08:20 PM Well, Northern California's in wildfire season. It's still quite hot and very dry, and there's smoke everywhere. Things turn green and the sky turns blue in December, and things will be beautiful here until May after that. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Ebbie Date: 10 Sep 01 - 08:34 PM Shudder... 90 degrees? Well, I guess it means that eventually we all migrate to where we need to be. Spaw, our autumns are not predictable. Some years, if rains hold off, we get gorgeous colors for several weeks on the mountainsides and in the valleys. Other years we jump into winter with both feet. I remember one year when we had a glorious White Halloween. Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: RangerSteve Date: 10 Sep 01 - 08:48 PM It's still summer here in New Jersey, in the 80's during the day, but it gets cool at night. Up in the Berkshires and New York State over the weekend I noticed the leaves were starting to turn. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: GUEST,SharonA at the library Date: 10 Sep 01 - 08:48 PM Yesterday I saw a sure sign that summer is on the wane: the geese are on the move to go south. Only this year, they seem to have given up flying in favor of the interstate highways: I saw a flock of them on the road at the local turnpike entrance, walking en masse toward the toll booths, blocking traffic! There's got to be a song in that. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Sep 01 - 09:12 PM Summers definately gone here but I love autumn - it is my favourite season, followed by spring - I guess in a way you can call them the seasons of change. Jon |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: catspaw49 Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:24 PM Yeah Jon, I think that's what I was really trying to say too.......Summer and Winter are the same but the changes that take place in Spring and Fall are always so wonderful.....You get the sense of life moving on and it's somehow very reassuring. There are lots of advantages to living in places where the climate remains pretty much the same year round, like San Diego.......But I love the Fall and without it in all of it's colorful magnificence and crisp, aromatic smell, I guess I'd feel kinda' cheated. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Mudlark Date: 10 Sep 01 - 11:25 PM Tag end of summer on the central coast of California. Kitchen overflowing with tomatoes, sure sign that autumn is nearly here. I remember the sound of geese as harbinger of fall in Arkansas...here it is the sight of hand sized tarantulas taking to the highway, just a lookin' for a home, so big they throw shadows in the slanty afternoon sun... |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: Gypsy Date: 11 Sep 01 - 11:23 PM Aye, Joe, and we have the blasted arsonists in our part of Northern CA! Much as i love summer, fall has it's merits...fewer fleas on the dogs, canning season is over, my seasonal job is over, have more time for music, and friends. And, while we never get warm here, January, when not raining, can be one of the sunniest times of the year for ua. |
Subject: RE: Where's the summer gone? From: brid widder Date: 12 Sep 01 - 02:05 PM maybe this is the time to remember...in the light of yesterday's awful events...that summer will return! |
